Jenny Sichel spent years training at the highest level while living with OCD that went misdiagnosed for 11 years. She did not tell her Paralympic coach until her competing days were over, because she was afraid of being judged and cut from the team.

This athlete mindset podcast conversation matters because it is the side of mental health in sports that fans rarely get to hear. Jenny talks about missing the team, rebuilding, and winning silver at the Rio Games with the honesty of someone who lived every step.

I sat down with Jenny, a rowing coxswain from Clifton, New Jersey who now lives in the Boston area, coached at the Tokyo Games, and serves as Director of Operations at the National Council on Independent Living. It is one of those sports underdog stories that reminds you what the game really costs and gives.

Key Takeaways
  • Jenny says her path came from giving herself as many opportunities as possible and then walking through the door when it opened.
  • Training with a mental health disability meant facing a stigma that nobody attaches to a sprained ankle.
  • When she doubted whether to go back to high performance rowing, two totally blind athletes she had coxed told her they could hear her smiling.
  • Winning silver at the Rio Paralympics was bittersweet, and the people of Rio made the Games unforgettable for her.
  • Today Jenny coaches, advocates, and runs operations at the National Council on Independent Living, a movement built on choice and control for people with disabilities.
  • Jenny Sichel says, “But with mental health, if you say I need to take some time off for mental health, people are like, whoa, are you okay?”
  • Jenny Sichel says, “I made the really, really difficult decision to retire from training and go start my coaching career, like at the elite level.”

Most of us were never taught how money truly works. Not in school, not at home, and definitely not by the news. Erica Downing has made it her mission to change that, and this conversation is one you do not want to sleep on. No fluff, just real stories about financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and what it actually takes to build generational wealth.

This episode matters because financial literacy is a survival skill. Erica connects the dots between money mindset, emotional discipline, and community uplift in a way that hits home for athletes, entrepreneurs, and everyday people alike. If you have ever wondered why smart, talented people still end up broke, this episode answers that question directly.

Erica Downing is a Washington D.C.-based entrepreneur, AI developer, author of two financial literacy books, and host of the Prosperity Pathways Podcast. She is also the founder of Flowbot Forge, a company helping entrepreneurs integrate AI and automation into their operations. Her work spans financial education, technology, community advocacy, and motivational speaking.

Key Takeaways

  • Financial literacy is a survival skill that most people are never taught, leaving them vulnerable to homelessness, debt, and missed opportunity.
  • Emotional discipline is the hardest and most important part of building wealth. Controlling your emotions stops impulsive spending and unlocks smarter decisions.
  • Athletes and celebrities coming into money should seek a certified financial planner and, ideally, a psychiatrist before taking advice from family or friends who have never been in that position.
  • Erica's children's books, King's Money Adventures for ages 6 to 12 and Beyond Survival: Maya's Journey to Generational Wealth for ages 15 to 25, are available on Amazon and designed to build financial habits early.
  • AI is not going to take your job. The person who knows how to use AI will. Erica advises learning AI skills with proper discretion and cybersecurity awareness.
  • Erica said, "Financial literacy is a skill that is needed for survival. A lot of people end up homeless or even jobless because they're not financially literate enough to understand that you're allowed to do more."
  • Erica said, "It's not AI that's going to take your job. It's going to be the person that knows how to use it, because it's an amplifier of our human abilities."

Now He's Breaking Down the NBA Finalshttps://www.spreaker.com/episode/trent-tucker-won-it-all-now-he-s-breaking-down-the-nba-finals--72468413A championship ring, two Finals teams, and one man who played for both.

Man, this one hits different. Game 1 of the NBA Finals is here, and we've got someone who didn't just watch these franchises build their legacies, he lived it from the inside. Trent Tucker is an NBA champion, a former New York Knick, a former San Antonio Spur, and one of the most honest voices you'll hear on what it actually takes to win at the highest level. No fluff, just real stories.

This is the kind of former NBA player interview that goes beyond the highlight reel. Trent takes us inside the 1992 and 1993 Chicago Bulls dynasty, what it was like playing alongside Michael Jordan every single day, and why Madison Square Garden is still the Mecca of basketball. For fans who grew up watching these players and want to hear where they are now, this episode is exactly that.

Drafted sixth overall by the Knicks in 1982 out of the University of Minnesota, Trent Tucker spent nine years in New York before joining the San Antonio Spurs, where he crossed paths with a young assistant coach named Gregg Popovich. He closed his career with a championship ring in Chicago. Now he does media and broadcast work, raises two hockey-playing sons in Minneapolis, and still bleeds Knicks blue.

Key Takeaways

Playing with Michael Jordan. Trent described being around Jordan as like being with a rock star, comparing his presence to the Beatles in the 1960s. Playing with great players puts you in the spotlight, and you have to be ready to deliver when the moment comes.

Flint, Michigan Shaped Everything. Growing up in Flint, Trent was one of the first players from the city to leave for a bigger stage at the University of Minnesota. He takes pride in opening that door for the players who came behind him.

Gregg Popovich Was Special from Day One. Trent met Pop as an assistant coach in San Antonio and could tell immediately he had all the tools. His ability to adapt his system to his talent, and to reach superstar players, made him one of the all-time greats.

Consistency Is the Underdog Story No One Tells. Trent's message to young athletes is simple. Consistency in your habits, your preparation, and your routine is what separates a long career from a short one. Eleven years in the NBA was built on doing the same things right every single day.

Sports Brings Us Together. Trent's most powerful moment in the episode was his reflection on Knicks fans traveling to road games. When you're sitting next to someone at Madison Square Garden, nobody cares where you're from. That, he said, is the beauty of sport.

Guest Quotes

"Being around Michael Jordan on a daily basis, it's hard to explain unless you are lucky enough to be in that circle, because everywhere you go, you know you're going to have great attention looked upon you as well." - Trent Tucker

"If we could take that togetherness into the rest of the world, just imagine how much better this world would be for all of us to live in. That's why sports matter." - Trent Tucker

This powerful narrative explores a basketball player fighting to stage a comeback, echoing themes from Oden's own life. The film is set to screen at the American Black Film Festival on May 27, 2025, at 5:05 PM at O Cinema in Miami Beach.

His journey led him to cold-email Greg Oden about the "Bust!" project, a bold move that paid off when Greg responded within a day, setting the stage for this compelling collaboration.

About the Film: Bust!

The title "Bust" is a term used to describe draft picks who failed to meet expectations — using it as the film title is an intentional, defiant reclamation. "Bust!" is a dramedy that navigates the emotional and psychological toll of high expectations and the journey of an athlete fighting for a comeback. Richie Kamtchoum wrote, directed, and acts in the film, bringing his personal understanding of the sport and storytelling to the screen.

Greg Oden serves as an executive producer and actor, lending his authentic experience to the narrative. The film features a talented cast including Casey Lawrence, Bernard Clark, Liam Harrington, Brittany Erica, Dijanette Horne, and Karen Smith. Key crew members include Sherwin Santos (producer), Danny April (producer), Cindy Kamtchoum (producer/writer/director), and Larry Hall (associate producer).

"Bust!" has been selected for the American Black Film Festival, a prestigious event known for launching the careers of notable filmmakers like Ryan Coogler and Issa Rae, further cementing its place as a significant independent film project.

Where to Watch and Connect

Catch "Bust!" at the American Black Film Festival on May 27, 2025, at 5:05 PM at O Cinema in Miami Beach. Greg Oden and Richie Kamtchoum will host a Q&A session after the screening, offering insights into the film and their experiences.

From Flag Football to the NFL Draft

Trey's origin story: started in flag football, was bigger than other kids so moved to contact early. Played quarterback, running back, fullback. In junior high his body changed and he played offensive line. Almost quit football — a high school coach talked him out of it. Body transformed in high school into a tall, lengthy athlete. Played tight end and linebacker. Schools recruited him as both a defender and a tight end, but he committed to developing as a tight end.

"You don't really see special tight ends very often, but when you see them, they got a good talent." - Trey

"This kid is a hard worker. He never backs down, and you don't want to mess with him. This guy is 6'3", 250 pounds." — Nithin Ramachandra

Three Schools, One Vision

Trey's journey through Carson Newman, Miles College, and Alabama A&M. Carson Newman was his foundation — a triple-option program that built his blocking fundamentals. Miles College brought him back to his versatile roots under Coach Sam Shade. Alabama A&M was a smooth transition because his coaching staff followed him from Miles. He won the SIAC Championship at Miles in 2024. At Alabama A&M he earned First Team All-Conference, All-American honors, and played against an SEC opponent (Arkansas).

"You got to start somewhere to finish where you want to be." - Trey

Alabama A&M — A Culture Worth Recruiting For

Trey describes the atmosphere at Alabama A&M: fans show up every Saturday win, lose, or draw. The alumni network is deeply engaged — present at every send-off, every trip. He describes it as feeling like family. The school's slogan: "You start here, go anywhere."

"If you want to be somewhere where you feel love and just feel like you're at home, like family — come to Alabama A&M." - Trey

"I love the growth of the HBCU schools and I love the way it's going." — Nithin Ramachandra

The HBCU Legacy Bowl Moment

Trey attended the 2026 HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans. He describes the week as a chance to compete against the best HBCU prospects in front of NFL scouts. He scored a touchdown — a back-shoulder throw from quarterback Cam Rampson, a player he had barely practiced with all week. Before the play, Trey told Cam in the huddle: "This is a touchdown." The catch happened exactly as he called it.

"You balled out in that game. That back-shoulder catch — that was crazy." — Nithin Ramachandra

Pro Day Preparation and What Scouts Saw

Trey worked intensively on his 40-yard dash and bench press heading into pro days. He sacrificed his entire spring break to train. His bench press reps started low and he pushed them to 16 through dedicated work. He ran every drill at his pro day to show scouts his willingness to compete under any circumstances. In scout meetings, he focused on communicating his football IQ, his character, and his team-first mentality.

What Separates Trey Abner from the Field

Trey identifies his mindset and adaptability as his defining traits. He is willing to play any role — tight end, special teams, punt return — whatever the coaching staff needs. He describes himself as a team player with a kind heart, not a stat-chaser. His ability to connect with a quarterback he had never played with and score a touchdown in a high-stakes showcase game is the clearest proof of his football intelligence and composure.

"Whoever drafts Trey Abner is getting a steal. This guy never backs down, and you do not want to mess with him." — Nithin Ramachandra

Family, Faith, and the Road to the Draft

Trey speaks about the importance of his family throughout his career. He lost his father about a year before this interview. His mother, sister, and extended community — church, school, hometown — have been a constant source of support. He is heading home the week of the draft to be surrounded by the people who have believed in him. He describes himself as a big family guy and emphasizes the importance of community support.

The Making of an Athlete

Darnerien McCants grew up in Howard County by way of Baltimore City, and by his own admission, he was not always headed in the right direction. It was athletics — not ambition for the NFL — that redirected his path. He played football, basketball, and track in high school, earning all-state honors in all three sports. He was a state champion in the high jump and a physically imposing presence at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds by his senior year. Yet despite his credentials, he was never formally recruited. His grades and SAT scores did not meet NCAA eligibility thresholds, and no school came calling. His stepfather eventually drove him to Delaware State, popped in a highlight tape, and the rest followed.

"It was just a matter of right time, right place. When I get the opportunity, I am going to shine." — Darnerien McCants

Delaware State, the HBCU Pipeline, and a Senior Year That Changed Everything

McCants arrived at Delaware State as a walk-on and navigated three different coaching staffs during his college career. By his senior year, he had nearly walked away from football entirely — he was six credits from graduation and had interviews lined up for teaching positions. A new head coach challenged him directly: prove your confidence is real, and I will honor your scholarship. McCants responded by becoming the top Black college football prospect in the country that year, earning a fifth-round selection in the 2001 NFL Draft — the same class that produced Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson.

Life in the NFL — Washington, Philadelphia, and the Business of Football

McCants spent time with the Washington Redskins, where head coach Marty Schottenheimer told him plainly that he had been drafted for a reason — not as a token pick. He later joined the Philadelphia Eagles, where head coach Andy Reid famously told him he was the only receiver who kept giving his defense trouble, so he had to bring him aboard. In 2003, McCants led his team in touchdowns. His best performances consistently came in NFC East matchups — the division he grew up watching. He describes his NFL career not through statistics, but through the brotherhood of the locker room and the satisfaction of proving doubters wrong every time he stepped on the field.

"Anytime I got the opportunity, you can look at my stats — I was always productive." — Darnerien McCants

The CFL, the Ravens, and Knowing When to Walk Away

After his time in the NFL, McCants had stints with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes in the CFL, as well as a training camp appearance with the Baltimore Ravens under special teams coach John Harbaugh. He describes the CFL as a fundamentally different game — wider field, different timing, different style — and one that did not suit his downfield, route-running skill set. His mother visited him at Ravens training camp and told him simply: you do not love it anymore. She was right. He walked away not with bitterness, but with clarity about what came next.

Coach McCants — Teaching, Mentoring, and the Next Generation

Today, Darnerien McCants is a teacher and youth football coach. He is deliberate about not leaning on his NFL credentials in the classroom or on the field. He can still demonstrate technique. He focuses on purpose, discipline, and mindset — the same qualities that carried him from an unrecruited walk-on to a professional athlete. He is candid about the challenges of coaching young players: most do not understand what elite discipline actually requires, and many are placed in the sport by parents rather than driven by genuine passion.

"Nine times out of ten, the average person does not want to put in the work. The average person does not have the discipline. The average person does not really know what it takes to be a great athlete." — Darnerien McCants

His Advice to the 2025 NFL Draft Class

When asked what he would tell incoming rookies, McCants did not talk about football. He talked about money. His advice: if you survived college on a limited budget, do not change your lifestyle the moment a signing bonus hits your account. Invest early, live below your means for the first three years, and understand that the body has a shelf life that the bank account does not have to share. He pointed to the alarming rate of financial collapse among former players — broke, homeless, or struggling with depression within three to five years of leaving the league — as the real cautionary tale no one tells loudly enough.

"Live those first three years until that second contract like you lived in college. Do not outlive your means." — Darnerien McCants

This one was a ride. I sat down with Adrian Hamilton — former NFL linebacker, Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens, and current insurance adjuster turned corporate professional — and got a masterclass in resilience, grit, and what it really means to keep going when the odds are stacked against you. We talked about growing up in Dallas watching the Cowboys dynasty, getting misled out of a Division I scholarship, walking on at Texas Tech, breaking records at Prairie View A&M, and what it felt like to hold that Lombardi Trophy in New Orleans. Adrian is real, funny, and deeply grounded — and this episode is packed with perspective you can use.

Adrian's path to the NFL was anything but straight. Misled by a recruiter at Oklahoma State, he found himself at a junior college before walking on at Texas Tech, then earning a scholarship at Prairie View A&M — where he still holds the conference record for sacks and tackles for loss. He went undrafted, chose the Dallas Cowboys as a hometown free agent, and eventually won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. After football, he transitioned into insurance litigation and corporate America — proving that identity doesn't have to stop at the final whistle.
