Adam Sikes, who writes under the pen name R.D. Sykes, was born in northern California but grew up in Massachusetts and Illinois. He attended Georgetown University, earning a BS in International Affairs and then a Masters in History. Adam spent the first ten years of his professional career in the US Marine Corps in infantry and reconnaissance units, serving numerous combat tours of duty in Bosnia, Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East. He was decorated for valor on multiple occasions and is the recipient of the Silver Star. Adam also served in Moscow, Russia, and various assignments in Western Europe. Adam was then approached and recruited to work at the CIA as a paramilitary officer in the Directorate of Operations. During his tenure at the CIA, Adam conducted intelligence operations in Central Asia, East Africa, and Europe. He was also involved in sensitive counterintelligence investigations, working with US law enforcement. After twenty-five years of service in the national security arena living and working around the world, Adam is now considering a move, not only from his home base in Virginia but into a new career as well.

UNITY PARADE
Congratulation to BP Adams and team for creating a wonderful important event for friendship of all.
The Unity Parade of Flags will kick off the International Day of Friendship Celebration. In the spirit of friendship, we will have our youth and country delegates carrying the flags of all 193 countries that are member states of the United Nations. Starting at 1:00 PM, delegates and parade marchers will walk from the Brooklyn Bridge to Cadman Plaza Park where Delegates from each country will stand and hold hands, with youth from all neighborhoods across Brooklyn forming a human chain around the park. As parade marchers stand with their country’s Delegate there will be a ceremonial handing off of the flag to show the significance of bridging the gap in generations and throughout the world’s people.

CULTURAL PERFORMANCES

Culture is a cornerstone of national identity and pride. International Day of Friendship will highlight performances specific to continental regions to expose Brooklynites to the rich diversity found in their backyard. We will be giving organizations the opportunity to highlight countries’ culture through reading, dances or music. These performances will start at 2:30 PM on Sunday August 2nd. These performances are sure to be a treat for those who are in attendance.

CONTINENTAL CUISINE

What better way to orientate yourself with a new country or culture than through food and drinks? Food is a very important part of a person’s day, so why not nourish the people of Brooklyn with unique cuisine from all around the world? International Day of Friendship will give Brooklynites a unique treat; there will be tents set up and filled with delicious food from around the world all provided for free. There will be at least two restaurants per continent with one restaurant per tent serving food.

The play is timely, given the present administration’s stance on immigration, and cultural clashes leading to tragedy that have repeated in history, whether it is the siege of Masada, the Holocaust, the Puerto Rican Taínos, or today’s crisis in Syria and the Middle East. "Temple of the Souls" highlights the urgency to decrease prejudice and increase acceptance for peace.

Interestingly, the “Temple of the Souls” production is a “family and friends affair,” as it was originally written by noted Puerto Rico poet, actress and performer Anita Velez-Mitchell (who recently died at 99 years of age), and developed to its present-day form by her granddaughter, Lorca Peress, noted Director and founder of Multistages, with her other granddaughter, Anika Paris, a noted composer with many Hollywood credits. Further, the play is produced by Anita’s daughter, famous television investigative reporter Jane Velez-Mitchell, and Executive Produced by family friend and Jane’s BFF from their days starting in the 1980s as reporters together at WCBS-TV News, Dr. Judy Kuriansky, who is a well-known clinical psychologist who knows about the love theme in the play from being the “love expert” hosting radio advice shows for years, and who knows about the culture issues in the play from producing many events at the United Nations including “World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development” and books she;s authored including “Beyond Bullets and Bombs: Grassroots Peacebuilding between Palestinians and Israelis.”

This is the hope for our present and future.”

Dr. Judy is available to talk about her involvement in the play and her expertise on the subject of cultural differences, both internationally and in interpersonal relationships, evident in her book, "The Complete Idiots Guide to A Healthy Relationship."

MULTISTAGES, in association with Dr. Judy Kuriansky and Jane Velez-Mitchell, is pleased to announce the award-winning musical, TEMPLE OF THE SOULS, co-written by poet Anita Velez-Mitchell, platinum-winning composers Dean Landon and Anika Paris, and MultiStages Artistic Director Lorca Peress. TEMPLE OF THE SOULS is a time-traveling love story set in the mystical El Yunque rain forest, caves, and valleys of Puerto Rico. We open on a present-day tour through an ancient cave known to be inhabited by Taíno Souls, the indigenous people who once ruled the island. Two tourists become entranced by a Taíno cave drawing of legendary lovers, and are magically transported back in time to the 16th Century as the lovers, Guario, a young Taíno runaway, and Amada, the daughter of a Conquistador. They meet by chance during the raucous San Juan Bautista Fiesta, but their union is thwarted by the intolerant world around them. To escape, they run to the Temple of the Souls where nightmares and dreams come true. ReelAbilities Film Festival
ReelAbilities Film Festival was initiated in New York at the JCC Manhattan in 2007, founded by Anita Altman and Isaac Zablocki. The festival was the first of its kind to present a series of award-winning films by, about and for people with disabilities. As the festival progressed, screenings continued to take place at multiple venues across the city and all films are followed by discussions that engage the community in promoting inclusion and celebrating diversity, while providing accessible conditions to match the different needs of our multi-layered society.

In 2012, other cities across the US followed New York’s footsteps by hosting a ReelAbilities Film Festival, starting at Cincinnati, Ohio. Since then, Reelabilities events have been held in over a dozen cities in North America. ReelAbilities events have expanded from the US to Canada and soon – Latin America, and take place in many different forms – film festivals, year round screenings and special programming that goes beyond film. Since its start, ReelAbilities has been consistently receiving an increasing number of outstanding film submissions from across the globe.

A primary mission shared by both academic and public libraries is to meet the streaming video needs of students and patrons for diverse and inclusive content such as African American Studies, LGBTQ+ Studies, Women’s Studies, Disabilities Studies and more. Preliminary results of a Kanopy survey of more than 960 librarians, publicly available January 2021, show that 94% of academic and 86% of public libraries say Collection Diversity is “very important” to “important.” Yet only 26% and 29% respectively say they are fully meeting their users’ needs for such content.

“With such a large student body, at an urban institution, DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) is a huge "issue" on campus, meaning that there is a huge interest in all aspects at every level of the institution,” explained one academic librarian who participated in the survey.

“Our community is diverse. Many languages other than English are spoken in the homes of our patrons, we also serve a community that is very diverse in age, income level, education level, etc. More than 30% of our service population were born outside the US. We need a diverse collection to meet the diverse needs of our diverse community,” added a public library survey participant.

“We are currently engaged in an evaluation of the diversity of our whole collection. It is a slow process as there has not been standards across the industries involved for measuring diversity. Our existing catalogue has no easy way to measure diversity…,” wrote another public library participant.
