Or perhaps making a video and sending it to you would work. But we still prefer to attend meetings or join live events like this one or on Zoom. Why?

Well, the primary benefit of attending an event is engagement. Engagement with the Presenter; engagement with other participants; engagement with friends; engagement with work teams.

So in this episode I am going to talk about audience engagement both at live events and online events.

Engagement makes any learning process more enjoyable, and the content more memorable. But engagement does not just mean breaking out into groups or pairs, and especially does not mean engaging in embarrassing games and exercises. I now live in Hull and it took me about 10 years to tune into the accent and dialect here.

If you are speaking to a mixed audience, and especially if you have people in the audience for whom English is not their first language, you need to speak with clarity. So today I am going to talk about speaking with clarity and give you a few exercises to help develop a clearer speaking voice.

Here are some exercises we will look at:

Mah Nah Mah Nah Man Nah
Buh Dug Guh Duh
Wah Bah Dah
Wah Wee Way Woo
Tah Tee Tay Too
Wah Vah Tah Thah

1. We are all going to Oxford in April.
2. Ought we to take Uncle Alfred and Aunt Ethel?
3. Actually I think they’ll arrive by air.
4. Of all the alternatives I accept the eighth.
5. Pay every attention to expert advice.
6. Who announced that opera? It was inaudible.

Don't forget that you can contact me at Rikki@rikkiarundel.com to find out how you can benefit from One to One coaching with me and book a free 30 minute trial session.</itunes:summary><itunes:duration>1416</itunes:duration><itunes:keywords>diction,enunciation,peppstory,publicspeaking,rikkiarundel,voice</itunes:keywords><itunes:explicit>clean</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="https://d3wo5wojvuv7l.cloudfront.net/t_rss_itunes_square_1400/images.spreaker.com/original/170b4182ac20276637c31987002f3328.jpg"/><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Episode 16 - PEPP Story - Story Structure

We have looked at where to find stories and a few examples. I don't agree.

I attended a zoom meeting this morning with about 20 other speakers, the theme of which was to share stories about our some of our successes in life. Some of those stories were about love at first sight, some were about bringing up children, some were anecdotes from work, some were about facing health challenges. Everyone told engaging stories and most of those stories were not from speeches. They were just stories from life - but stories that could all be used in speeches.

So tonight I am going to tell you abut 1969 - I know - Summer of 69 from Bryan Adams - I really was one of the best years of my life. The feedback that every speaker receives is valuable, but what is often not realised is that the process of evaluating another speaker gives even greater value to the evaluator.

Whilst I strongly recommend joining a Toastmasters or Association of Speakers Club, you don't have to because thanks to TED and TEDx there are tens of thousands of fascinating, short speeches to evaluate. All you have to do is pick a random TEDx talk every day and evaluate it and today I am going to talk about how to evaluate other speeches.

The process I am going to explain is one of the most important skills anyone can learn especially if you are a manager of have aspirations to manage people. The evaluation skills I learned and developed in Toastmasters twice helped me to win the Britain and Ireland Evaluator of the Year award, and are the same skills needed to evaluate the performance of a staff.

Don't forget that you can contact me at Rikki@rikkiarundel.com to find out how you can benefit from 1 to 1 coaching with me.</itunes:summary><itunes:duration>1063</itunes:duration><itunes:keywords>evaluation,peppstory,publicspeaking,rikkiarundel</itunes:keywords><itunes:explicit>clean</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="https://d3wo5wojvuv7l.cloudfront.net/t_rss_itunes_square_1400/images.spreaker.com/original/170b4182ac20276637c31987002f3328.jpg"/><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Episode 8 - PEPP Story - Outstanding Speaking

My goal this month is to help you to become an Outstanding Speaker - no matter how experienced you are.
