But what about the LD child whose learning difference is not academic (such as math or reading or spelling)? What about the LD child whose learning difference is social or emotional? Theirs is the toughest battle. Why? Because ALL environments are social (at home, at school, everywhere). Included among these children are those labelled as Twice Exceptional. These 2e children are very high-IQ children who also suffer from OE's (overexciteabilities due to an overactive Amygdala, the part of the brain that controls emotional responses). Due to this asynchronous development, they suffer from lagging skills to tolerate frustration, to be flexible or to solve problems. However, these lagging skills are teachable skills. This new lens of looking at this type of child’s needs through a lense of understanding, compassion, empathy and effective teaching methods is vital on the part of the families, the educators, the therapists and even government agencies and the communities where these children live. Why is this new lens so vital? Because these beautiful children, often high-IQ and highly creative, are only being looked at through a lens of their maladaptive behaviors. They are often misunderstood by their own loving families who are stressed out and often divorced due to one spouse being unable or unwilling to see their child through the proper lens. They are prescribed medications that do not work, add more problems. They are often either the victim of a bully or the bully at school, they are the social outcast, the teacher’s most behaviorally challenging student, the student given detention, the student who the principal expels or worse, calls the police on. Some of these children run away from their homes as they struggle with their OE’s or overexciteabilities and inability to understand why they are having them. Others display their frustration with aggressiveness at home with their own parents who desperately call CPS (Child Protective Services) and CPS gets the police involved in a frantic attempt to “help.” Do you see the chaotic and damaging results of not seeing this child through the right lens? I do. Because of not seeing these precious children through the right lens and not teaching these children the social and emotional skills needed, these children tragically and undeservedly face a very frightening reality - a hidden school-to-jail or home-to-jail pipeline. This ugly pipeline needs to be stopped in order to protect the future of these misunderstood and under-served children. Join this podcast if you want to join me in prayer for these children and their families. The word ekklesia means where two or more are gathered in the name of Jesus. This is an ekklesia for the mothers (fathers welcomed too) who want to stand up and take action to stop this pipeline and bring needed support, education and reform to families, and their beautiful misunderstood and under-served children. We need much reform to how we can effectively empower these children and their families, how faith-based-community support can be provided to them, how government and education can best serve these children and their families. In order to protect the future of these children and to provide compassionate and effective support, it's time to mother a movement to help bring needed reform.
