Student learning is a shared responsibility between schools and parents. Technology is transforming how and where students learn. The classroom has been extended to any location with an internet connection. As students spend more time learning and socializing online, we all need to work together to ensure our students stay healthy and safe. The Social Media Awareness Campaign (SMACtalk) was formed in response to this need. The purpose of SMACtalk is to bring awareness, provide resources, and increase communication for teachers, parents, and students.

2. Do not delete anything before law enforcement is able to review it.
3. Tell law enforcement everything about the online encounters. It may be embarrassing, but it is necessary
to find the predator.

A teacher for five years, she’s said to use her experience in the oil and gas business to help connect students with the world outside the classroom. She started teaching in North Carolina in 2002, but after a family move worked for oil and gas companies in Texas and Fort Smith before returning to the classroom. At Belle Point, she started a coding club, worked on ACT prep program and literacy intervention.

Featuring special guests, fun themes, and giveaway prizes each week, The Early Birds reaches out to both kids and adults, providing positive, educational content to listen to on the way to school and work! Mr. Steve has become the premier performer for children in the Nashville area, hosting and curating the Kids Music Fest at Live on the Green each year, partnering up with the Governor and his wife for their summer reading initiative “Read to Be Ready” and will be playing Pilgrimage Festival this fall. The theme for this episode of SMACTalk For Teachers is Online Dangers. Our special guest is Lisette Yang, Senior Forensic Interviewer at the Children’s Protection Center. Her work includes interviewing children affected by all forms of abuse and maltreatment. She is also in charge of doing outreach education regarding child abuse, internet safety, mandated reporting, Latino awareness, among others. She loves interviewing and educating others about anything related to child abuse, victims, and the Latino culture.

Lisette and our host Cassandra Barnett, Program Advisor for School Libraries at the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education, discuss how educators can help kids avoid various online dangers including abuse, cyberbullying, sexting, sextortion, trafficking and more. Signs of online danger to watch for, breaking through the “don’t tell adults” code among students in schools, tips, strategies and resources that both educators and kids can use to evade online dangers are examined in this episode.

Her current job involves training and spreading awareness on issues affecting Arkansans and how the AG’s office can help and provide educational opportunities.

The special guest interviewee, Robin Finley is a District Administrator in Alma School District and one of her roles is as an Instructional Technology Specialist. This is Robin's 33rd year as an educator. She feels that data privacy and cybersafety are essential parts of education today. She is part of our SMAC Advisory Group.
In episode 1, Cassandra Barnett and Robin Finley discuss ways to help students positively engage with the digital world and how educators and parents can partner with their students and children to help them become better digital citizens. They discuss, as educators:

1. How can we help our students develop the social and emotional skills necessary to use their devices wisely?

2. How can we help our students manage their online reputations?

3. How can we help our students develop strategies to unplug from their devices in order to participate in real life activities?

4. How can we help our students know what to do if they encounter dangerous or unhealthy relationships online such as cyberbullying, sexting, or predators?

5. How can we help our students learn how to protect their privacy and personal information?

6. How can we help our students think critically about the information they find online?

7. How can we help our students be digital leaders who can make their digital world better and safer?

The interviewer, Cassandra Barnett has been a school librarian for 42 years and is currently the Program Advisor for School Libraries for the Arkansas Department of Education.
