ASHLAND, Ohio – Lee Owens, longtime football coach at Ashland University, motivational speaker and team-culture coach, will be back on campus for a special event featuring his new book, “The Spirit of a Team: Successful CEOs and Coaches Share Their Strategies for Achieving Excellence,” on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The event will begin at the Eagles’ Nest inside the Hawkins-Conard Student Center at 10:30 a.m., with Owens reading an excerpt from the book followed by a question-and-answer session. Around 11:30 a.m., Owens will shift to the AU Campus Store, where copies of his book are available for purchase, for a signing and meet-and-greet. Mansfield Distributing, your locally owned and operated Anheuser-Busch distributor, is proud and excited to present the eight-horse Clydesdale team that will be harnessed and hitched to the iconic red beer wagon at the Wayne County Fair on September 11th, from 4pm to 6pm, the Bellville Street Fair on September, 12th from 4pm to 6pm, and the Ashland Country Fair on September, 14th from 3pm to 5pm. There will also be an opportunity for pictures with a single horse at The Brickyard in Mansfield on September, 10th from 5pm to 7pm.

The Clydesdales’ appearances in our area are just a few of the hundreds made annually by the traveling hitches. Canadians of Scottish descent brought the first Clydesdales to America in the mid-1800’s. Today, the giant draft horses are used primarily for breeding and show.

Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white legs, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.

A single Clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day.

Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian. In the early days of brewing, Dalmatians were bred and trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries.

The organization’s first ever capital campaign, "Mansfield Playhouse: Building the Next Stage Together," marks the Playhouse’s 100th anniversary and a pivotal moment in its history, ensuring that future generations will continue to experience the magic of live theater in a modern, inclusive venue.

For nearly 60 years, the Mansfield Playhouse has operated from a repurposed church building at 95 East Third Street, bringing affordable, high-quality performances to the community. However, the aging structure has reached the end of its usability. It is not accessible to everyone with its stairways, and that lack of accessibility prevents the Playhouse from securing essential grants. The new state-of-the-art, one-story facility will feature two theaters, improved amenities, and a more inclusive environment, allowing the Playhouse to expand its reach and serve a broader audience.
“Our current building has served us well, but it’s time for a transformation," said Doug Wertz, president and artistic director of the Mansfield Playhouse. "We owe it to our community to create a space where everyone—regardless of physical ability—can experience the joy of live theater."

Why Mansfield Needs a New Playhouse

The new theater will address critical needs, including:
Full Accessibility – The current facility lacks modern accessibility features, preventing some community members from attending performances and participating in productions. The new Playhouse will be fully ADA-compliant, ensuring that everyone can enjoy live theater.


Preserving a Community Treasure – Founded in 1925, the Playhouse has fostered generations of actors, volunteers, and theatergoers. The new building will honor this legacy while equipping the Playhouse for a thriving future.

MANSFIELD –This is the 10th anniversary of Richland Gives, an online giving event hosted by the Richland County Foundation (RCF).

 This year donors will notice lower fees at 2.9%. The RCF Board of Trustees voted to cover the 4% platform fees.

Since its inception, Richland Gives has raised almost $3M for hundreds of local nonprofit organizations.

Thanks to the generosity of donors of the Foundation, $80,000 in incentives will be awarded as grants to participating organizations, beyond what they raise from online donations.

MANSFIELD –This is the 10th anniversary of Richland Gives, an online giving event hosted by the Richland County Foundation (RCF).

 This year donors will notice lower fees at 2.9%. The RCF Board of Trustees voted to cover the 4% platform fees.

Since its inception, Richland Gives has raised almost $3M for hundreds of local nonprofit organizations.

Thanks to the generosity of donors of the Foundation, $80,000 in incentives will be awarded as grants to participating organizations, beyond what they raise from online donations.

The Shelby School Board on Monday night announced the Press Box at the Whippet Athletic Complex will be named in honor of Chuck Ridenour.

Chuck, who worked for the Shelby Globe, spent over 40 years writing stories about Shelby student athletes. Ridenour won several awards for his writing and was inducted into the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Hall of Fame back in the spring.

The Shelby School Board said, the district wants to honor Chuck Ridenour for his lifelong devotion to Shelby and tireless efforts to promote Shelby student athletes.

Ridenour passed away in December of 2022 at the age of 61, following a lengthy battle with various health issues.

Alex Bruskotter was just incredible, as he poured in a game high 27 points and 7 rebounds. Bruskotter sealed the game late at the free throw line. Alex for the game was an amazing 15/16 at the foul line.

Issaiah Ramsey scored 11 points, which included three 3-point field goals. All of those triples came when Shelby absolutely needed them. Casey Lantz had 8 points and two of the wildest dunks you will ever see at the high school level. Brayden Devito had 2 huge three's for 6 points and Bryson Baker had a key 3-point play late in the 2nd half, which provided huge momentum for the Whippets.

The Whippets won the rebounding battle by 3 (22-19) and scored 14 fast break points.

Shelby (25-2) has won 19 straight games and is still unbeaten in 2024 at 19-0. The 25 wins are the most in school history.  

The Whippets will now meet Maysville on Saturday, March 23rd at 2 pm in Dayton at UD Arena in the Division II State Sem-Finals.

Mansfield mental health nonprofit 33 Forever will host the first-ever 33 Forever Mental Health Birthday Walk in downtown Mansfield on May 22. This family-friendly awareness walk and fundraiser will start and finish at Mansfield’s Richland Carrousel Park with a 3.3 km (2 mile) route around the downtown area. The walk will begin at 11:33 am with check-in and registration starting at 10:33 am. Event sponsors include Rick and Carol Taylor, Spherion, Edge Plastics, OhioHealth, Richland Source, DRM Productions, POSM, Mechanics Bank and the Gesouras Family.

“The inspiration behind 33 Forever, Dani Leedy, was born in May and May is, of course, Mental Health Awareness Month so we are excited to bring a new mental health awareness event to the Mansfield area this month,” says Donna Heck, 33 Forever President. “We hope that this will be a fun family event that will allow folks the chance to get out and enjoy the outdoors together and do something for a good cause.”

Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to register and walk together. Fun and entertainment options at the end of the walk in the Carrousel area will include free carrousel rides for walkers and their families, magic, balloons, music, food and drink options as well as information booths from local mental health organizations. Walkers should register in advance at www.33forever.life to ensure getting event t-shirts but registration will be available the day of the event, as well.
