Blix comes from Löddeköpinge a small town just north of Malmo in Sweden’s southern region. Her father up to several months ago was the main anchor-man for one of Sweden’s daily news broadcasting networks. He had worked his way up the ranks having spent years as an investigator journalist traveling the world reporting on all sorts of issues, a job that very often took him to unsafe places, bringing him into contact with corrupt, villainous and unsavoury persons. They found her ten-years-ago abandoned on the church steps, then the only church in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The handwritten unsigned letter that was tucked under her blanket merely stated her name, date of birth and that one-day an explanation would be given as to why she was abandoned to such a remote part of the world and that they would be reunited, either in this world or the next.



Gyda received a card from this mystery person every year on her birthday, was it from her natural father? Or her natural mother? The card also contained a considerable amount of cash in the form of Danish Kroner. Gyda despite being brought up in the Inuit traditions had always wanted to find out who she really was. Her Inuit parents tried on numerous occasions to unfold the mystery to Gyda’s true identity but failed on every attempt. An insurmountable stonewall greeted them at every turn.



This card as Gyda’s Inuit parents suspected had an edge of wariness to it, Gyda opened it to reveal a typed message, the old king is dead, a new king sits on the Danish throne, a small ray of light is at the end of the tunnel for us all. Jorun and her friends set themselves up as unofficial tour guides, they know where the best spots are to see the lights. Their webpage they have created attracts a lot of visitors. The fee they charge is considerably less then what the official guides in the area charge so with outbidding their nearest rivals they are extremely busy.  



Their wildlife conservation webpage, which they’ve cleverly linked to their Northern Lights page also attracts a lot of worldwide attention. Some attention however is unwanted especially after the interview they had with Russia’s ambassador to Norway where Jorun, Kirsten and Hakon challenged her, on what her country was doing about giving the Siberian tigers greater protection from ruthless poachers who are threating the very survival of these endangered animals in the far east of her country close to the Chinese and North Korean borders.

This engaging story is all about the relationship between two boys, who come from different backgrounds as well as cultures.  Add differing abilities into the melting plot and you have the basis for this wonderful and endearing story.



Fadl is an only child; he comes from Muscat in Oman. The family are wealthy beyond imagination with lavish homes all around the world, a luxury-yacht and highly prized Arabian horses. It’s fair to say Fadl has a charmed life. However that life is about to see the world from a different view.



Fadl as part of his upbringing to sent to the prestigious Eton College in the UK. His father sees this as the start of his son’s progression to ultimately heading the family global corporate empire. Fadl’s mother on the other hand agreeing to send her son to London is to give Fadl an opportunity to see life from a different angle, an angle away from his father’s influences, allowing him to experience new things in a whole new world. A world uncommon to him, with no bodyguards, no mingling with rich kids and no demanding father bearing down on him.



Harold is my high-grade Downs Syndrome boy who lives with his mum and his brother in a rented flat above the café, the café that Fadl with his friend Paul visit often and who Harold frequently serves. Fadl having no experience of talking to someone with Harold’s learning dis abilities is uneasy with this situation, he asks his mother what should he do and her reply is simple, make friends with him, learn about his ways, he’ll be your most loyal friend for life. This breathtaking and exhilarating story is set in one of the most stunning places on earth, Yellowstone National Park. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty teeming with wildlife that invigorates the very essence of man’s soul. The geologists and volcanologists among you know of course that Yellowstone is in reality a super volcano and when you look at the satellite pictures you can see why.



Within this spectacular setting we find Kymana my Native American girl from the Shoshone People in Wyoming State with her friend Dyani who stems from the Cheyenne across the state line in Montana. Kymana will take you to various parts of the park sometimes with her friend Dyani and at other times with her father who’s the Park Ranger. 



The two girls on one of their daily adventures come across an abandoned wolf pup with a deformed leg to which they give the name Three Socks, they kind of adopt the little pup, knowing it goes against nature’s way. Initially they hide the pup in an outback store building, but you can’t hide a growing wolf pup for long. Kymana’s father is none to pleased on discovering the pup and admonishes his daughter for interfering with Mother Nature’s way, but he soon warms to the little pup and Three Socks becomes part of the family.



Kymana is breaking with Shoshone customs she has an eye for space and in the story as a special birthday present from her father she goes with him to the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida to get a feel for the life of an astronaut. To punish his father for his underhandedness, he escapes with the help of his Chinese friend Jinhai across China to The Forbidden City in Beijing. His brother tracks him down and he agrees to come home. Unfortunately like in some families, the family lifestyle has come apart at the seams as Malaina’s mother has succumbed to the pitfalls of alcohol and drug additions to the point that she has left the family homestead and now lives as a homeless person on the streets of Quebec City. Malaina feels her teenage years have been robbed from her as she, her sister as well as her father tirelessly deal with her mother’s fallen ways with little success.



The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visits her school and Malaina decides to approach him to directly ask him, how does he intend to address the growing problem in society of homelessness and addictions. The reply rather surprises her, for she was expecting a brush off, but he sits down to talk to her and while he says he and his government don’t have all the answers to societies problems he went on to tell her about a school bully issue a friend of his faced and what he did to resolve the matter. The reply interests her, so she decides to adopt a different approach to deal with her mother’s issues.

Davos where I put the character Emerita with her St Bernard dog, Gretel for much of the year is a small quite backwater place in Switzerland, but for three days a year in late January it comes to the fore front of the world’s attention as world leaders and top business entrepreneurs along with renowned scientists gather in the conference halls to discuss world issues.



However with it being mid-winter in the Swiss Alps, the surrounding mountains are covered in deep snow, and whilst that conjures up an idyllic winter scene with skiers having fun as they swish down the mountainsides on their skies there is lurking under all that snow the very real threat of a live avalanche. Avalanches are highly dangerous carrying with them an extremely high-risk of serious injuries to man and ultimately loss of life.



So I deliberately put Emerita there, as it gave me the opportunity to touch on two issues that in some way affects mankind, avalanches and the world summit, all wrapped up in a child’s story. 



Emerita touches on the world summit from what she sees from her bedroom balcony as her house overlooks Davos, but it’s mainly about how she with her dog Gretel, along with her brother and father rescue the wife of the French Ambassador to Germany, who with a small party of cross-country skiers gets caught out and trapped in the avalanche in the Davos Jacobshorn ski resort area.

Life in Rio as the city is sometimes known as has two sides to it, rich and poor with not much in the middle. The rich live in their luxury apartments and villas in amongst the sleek skyscrapers in areas like Copacabana beach surrounded by armed guards and twenty-four hour security. The poor in stark contrast are confined to the city outskirts, the slums, shantytowns, favelas that dominate the steep hills that frame Rio. It’s in one of these sprawling favelas we find Guia, she might be from a poor background but she has a rich imagination and an inner strength that will bring about her escape to a better life. 



Kaahi is the illegal refugee boy that fled the war in his homeland of Somalia, the war that took his family, the war that took his leg, and the war that led him to flee in search of a better life. Life has dealt Kaahi a cruel hand until Guia finds him on the streets amongst the down and outs. Guia instantly picks up that this neglected boy from Africa has something about him, something that needs nurturing, and something with hard work could equally benefit her.



As the story unfolds you start to see how Guia and Kaahi forge ahead with new lives especially for Kaahi as his dream of taking part in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games becomes reality. The rich live in their luxury apartments and villas in amongst the sleek skyscrapers in areas like Copacabana beach surrounded by armed guards and twenty-four hour security. The poor in stark contrast are confined to the city outskirts, the slums, shantytowns, favelas that dominate the steep hills that frame Rio. It’s in one of these sprawling favelas we find Guia, she might be from a poor background but she has a rich imagination and an inner strength that will bring about her escape to a better life. 



Kaahi is the illegal refugee boy that fled the war in his homeland of Somalia, the war that took his family, the war that took his leg, and the war that led him to flee in search of a better life. Life has dealt Kaahi a cruel hand until Guia finds him on the streets amongst the down and outs. Guia instantly picks up that this neglected boy from Africa has something about him, something that needs nurturing, and something with hard work could equally benefit her.

The two brothers are very different, like most brothers are; Dantel is the quiet, sensitive academic one, whereas Emilio is the boisterous, sporty, happy-go-lucky guy. The two brothers have been left orphaned as a result of their parents getting themselves tangled up in local drug gangs’ crimes. Unfortunately Peru like some of its neighbours is at times overwhelmed with illegal drug trading and all the problems that come down the line that are associated with this unpleasant business.



However this story is predominately all about the day the earthquake struck the city and how Dantel recues his brother Emilio who unlike him didn’t heed the warning signs and is buried alive under fallen concrete and rumble. The trick of the rescue was Dantel’s use of his smartphone.
