Maya is dedicated to projects that have a sense of “purpose” in the world, selecting stories that illuminate some aspect of the human experience that is untold, rarely seen, or might benefit from new approaches to issues of diversity and inclusion, primarily in America.

On this podcast we discuss her film Through the Banks of the Red Cedar! The story unfolds through the eyes of Maya Washington, Gene's youngest daughter, as she uncovers her father's journey and the impact of this legacy on the present generation. Maya traces her father's footsteps from the segregated South to the North, over the course of a modern football season. As she uncovers both the triumphs and defeats of her father's team, she develops a newly formed appreciation for the game and a deeper connection to her father, just in time to witness MSU Spartan Football team ascend to national prominence 50 years later.

The racial demographics seen on the field today are due in large part to Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty’s innovative approach to recruiting African American men from the South to MSU in the 1960s, known as the “Underground Railroad” of college football. The success of MSU’s 1965 and 1966 back-to-back Big Ten and National Champion teams forces America to re-think prejudices that previously kept African American players from earning scholarships or starting positions.

The story delves into the triumphs and defeats of Daugherty's integrated team as they finish the season with the historic 1966 "Game of the Century," a 10-10 tie against Notre Dame. Teammates Gene Washington, Bubba Smith , Clinton Jones, and George Webster make history as first round picks in the 1967 draft. Gene Washington and Clinton Jones bring momentum to the Minnesota Vikings, playing in the 1969 Super Bowl alongside legendary teammates Joe Kapp, Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, John Henderson, Oscar Reed, Dave Osborn and Mick Tingelhoff. Maya's interviews with former players recall the highlights of the Minnesota Vikings' "Purple People Eater" years, as well as the racial discrimination black players faced in the league, speaking to the overall impact African American pioneers had on players' rights, including free agency and the right to negotiate salaries. Her appreciation and gratitude for her father grows deeper as together they reveal how what happened 50 years ago is still relevant today.

Synopsis
Catherine Eaton stars as Liv, a young woman who has never spoken, raised on a remote island by her grandfather Lionel (Harris Yulin, "Ozark"). When Lionel discovers he's dying, he calls the driven, privileged son (Teddy Sears, "The Flash") of his best friend to the island and asks him to protect Liv's independence, alongside Lionel's attorney (Frankie Faison, "The Wire"). That night, as Lionel is reading to Liv, his voice fails him. Liv picks up the book of Shakespeare and begins - first reading, then weaving a new language from Shakespeare's words. She is committed to a psychiatric hospital and becomes a full-blown rebel in the hospital; her increasing violence threatens to keep her locked up for life as she fights for her voice and her freedom.

Synopsis

When Lionel discovers he's dying, he calls the driven, privileged son (Teddy Sears, "The Flash") of his best friend to the island and asks him to protect Liv's independence, alongside Lionel's attorney (Frankie Faison, "The Wire"). That night, as Lionel is reading to Liv, his voice fails him. Liv picks up the book of Shakespeare and begins - first reading, then weaving a new language from Shakespeare's words. She is committed to a psychiatric hospital and becomes a full-blown rebel in the hospital; her increasing violence threatens to keep her locked up for life as she fights for her voice and her freedom.

After becoming a parent in 2010 Procter realized the deep need for community support especially in single parent situations. She launched The Ground in Kern Vally State Prison in 2019 in order to assist with emotional language and conflict management skills for parents reentering from incarceration. After witnessing the high number of ACES within the class Procter added String Theory Club to Ground Breakers. STC curriculum offers each child support in developing their own individual positive identity. By having conversations around emotional wellbeing, Procter hopes to empower people to create new cultural norms on both the individual and community level.

For ten seasons Procter dedicated herself to infusing Detective Calleigh Duquesne with spice, spunk and southern charm. Their contrasting ideas and perspectives on life and love are detailed, with Jesse, a romantic disguised as a cynic, and Céline seemingly a romantic. Before Sunrise also explores time and self-discovery.
Before Sunrise premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 1995, and was theatrically released eight days later.


Krizan currently resides in Los Angeles, where she writes and teaches writing courses, most notably at UCLA. In the fall of 2021, she launched a video based writing class on Patreon

After Procter moved to Los Angeles, her father provided the funds for acting school for two years. Before even graduating, she had already landed a number of small roles in films such as Cameron Crowe's sports romantic comedy-drama Jerry Maguire (1996) and co-starred with David Schwimmer and Chris Cooper in the TV movie Breast Men (1997). In 1996, Procter guest-starred in the ABC superhero drama Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, where she played Lana Lang. She briefly appeared in the TV movie The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! (1997) as Mavis. She also appeared in the drama Body Shots (1999) as Whitney Bryant.

Beatriz has worked extensively with clients such as Google, Airbnb, Peerspace, The New York Times, CNN, Square and Fatherly, creating multi-platform original content. Outside of branded content, Beatriz has directed and produced 34 Carmine St., an award winning short documentary.

Born in Brazil but raised in China and the UAE, Beatriz has the ability to work in fast-paced global environments due to her international perspective and endurance.

She excels at content ideation and story development/producing. With a knack for adaptability, Beatriz is able to tell stories from all over the world, in addition to speaking 5 languages fluently. Her stories are often character-centric that resonates with a worldwide audience.

Directed and produced by Beatriz Browne, 34 Carmine St. is a short documentary about preserving the culture and community of small businesses. An esoteric story told through the life of a bookstore owner who embodies the last fortress of one of New York’s most prominent neighborhoods, Greenwich Village. Light hearted, yet solemn, 34 Carmine St. is a key to enter the door of a Bohemian world that still exists within our modern society.

My 2013 directing debut THE HILL, about the demolition of an African-American neighborhood in New Haven, CT, premiered on the PBS series America Reframed and won best documentary at Greenpoint Film Festival.

My 2014 film SCHOOL’S OUT, about a forest kindergarten in Switzerland, premiered on the PBS series Natural Heroes, won best short at several festivals, and was written about on Slate.com, in The Atlantic, and in National Geographic. With screenings at over 100 film festivals and public screenings around the world, SCHOOL’S OUT sparked a movement among early childhood educators to set up their own versions of an outdoor kindergarten. There are now over 250 forest kindergartens in the U.S.

My recent feature documentary MISSING IN BROOKS COUNTY premiered in fall of 2020 at Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, has won 11 awards since and received funding from ITVS and is Executive Produced by Abigail Disney. The film was released theatrically this past summer and will air on the PBS series Independent Lens in January 2022.

I spent the spring of 2019 on a Fulbright Scholarship in Toronto working on the documentary SAFE HAVEN about U.S. war resisters seeking asylum in Canada and the award-winning short film SOLEDAD about an asylum case. Both films are currently screening at film festivals in North America.

Some of my other films about the Southwest are the award-winning TEACHING IN ARIZONA (2018) and THE CLEANERS. (2017).

I have taught filmmaking at Yale University, Wesleyan University, Colorado College and Trinity College and currently teach at the School of Theatre, Film and Television, the Human Rights Practice Program and the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona.
I am a member of the film collective New Day Films.

Scott considers his existentially meandering college years and his playfully mischievous youth to be the perfect incubators for his authentic brand of storytelling.

Finding himself too weird to be a normal person and too normal to be a weird person, Scott sought refuge in the arts, hiding at the end of a camera lens and a blinking cursor. His days of mountain bike stunts are [likely] over. His credits include Sony Pictures, MTV, and Bravo. He resides in Los Angeles and will continue to do so until they meet his demands.

Reena Sehgal is from Bend, Oregon, and attended Portland State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in General Science.

After graduating, Reena moved to San Diego, California to pursue a legal career. She graduated Cum Laude from Thomas Jefferson School of Law with a focus in Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law.

Reena has always loved business, creativity, and the arts, and in law school she discovered how to use her skills, education, and passion in a rewarding field. After working for some extremely reputable companies, where she worked alongside, networked, and engaged with industry leaders, she decided to start her own solo practice – Law Offices of Reena Sehgal – in 2016. Since then, she has worked with numerous independent filmmakers, artists, and producers on international and domestic films. She also worked and continues to work with individuals and companies in television, live stage, and music.

Reena, understanding that filmmaking is an expensive proposition, created and developed a first-of-its-kind digital automation and CRM platform for entertainment representatives called AT YOUR FINGERTIPS. The platform makes legal documents and packages of documents available to filmmakers at a fraction of the cost of traditional legal services.

Reena’s vision has always been to make legal services affordable and easily accessible.

Aside from working, Ms. Sehgal enjoys traveling, cooking and running five – yes, five – miles a day. She also loves spending time with her dog, Nugget.

Sheila Houlahan is the executive producer and showrunner for a new hybrid feature film adaptation of Marsha Norman’s Pulitzer prize-winning play Night, Mother, a show that details concentric circles of grief, isolation and suicide. The film screened exclusively on Twitch, and utilized Twitch’s innovative platform for live performance interwoven throughout the film. Houlahan played the role of Jesse in the production, with award-winning actress Ellen McLain as Thelma/Mother. John Patrick Lowrie directed the project, with rising-star cinematographer Trevor Roach at the helm of creating a truly innovative visual storytelling methodology. Legendary photographer Eli Reed handled the still photography for the production. The adaptation is set on Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the isolation and mental health crisis generated by a world forced to remain in lockdown for over a year. Working in television at MTV Networks by day while DJing in downtown New York clubs by night, it was music that sparked Greg's interest in filmmaking when he began to follow London’s burgeoning Grime scene, a musical movement created by kids in the city’s public housing complexes. Inspired to capture Grime’s DIY, working-class stories on camera he relocated to London in 2006. There he documented Grime artists and created content for MTV UK.

Since returning to New York in 2010, Greg has directed, produced, shot and edited a wide range of documentary content for outlets such as Salsoul Records, New York Cider Association, Facebook and PBS. From 2016-18, he worked as a producer/editor at S&P Global. From 2018 to 2019, he was Senior Multimedia Producer for Okayplayer and OkayAfrica.

In 2020, Greg started Sunset People, a production house that tells stories about music, art and culture. He is currently producing and directing the fine art doc series James Cohan Features. He is also directing The Sound of Toys, a documentary film about Casio keyboards coproduced by Saboteur Media and Mass Appeal.

Dan Attias has worked as a director in the film and television industry since 1984. As a director of series television, he has received the Directors Guild of America award for outstanding direction of dramatic television for The Wire and has been nominated for episodes of The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Homeland, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He has received Emmy Award nominations for his comedy direction on Entourage and continues to work on some of the most celebrated American television shows. His other credits include The Americans, Deadwood, True Blood, Lost, Big Love, The Killing, True Detective, The Walking Dead, Bloodline, Friday Night Lights, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Billions, and The Boys.

Dan started his career by studying acting, then worked as an assistant director on E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Airplane!, One From the Heart, and several other feature films. He has taught acting and directing workshops in the United States and has conducted master classes in Italy, Greece, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada. He has also mentored many young directors, several of whom have gone on to successful careers in television.

Feeling the need to expand his horizons,he auditioned for the Rutgers University MFA Acting program, was accepted, and spent three years studying under William Esper. Upon graduating, he acted in numerous plays in NYC, including "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Harlem Arts Center,"The Pavilion" directed by Michael Kostroff ("The Wire," "The Black List"), and Ken Greller's play "Troll" at The Secret Theater. Currently, he is happily ensconced in Red Bank, New Jersey, with his wife (and producing partner) Maria and their two daughters Vera and Josie. In 2018, Jeffrey penned and directed a short film called "Three Sonnets" based on a dilemma he faced when his wife was pregnant with their first daughter, which became a surprise hit. The film played multiple festivals and received television distribution on five continents. Jeffrey completed two films during the pandemic; "Breathing Room" a searing portrait of a nursing home on the verge of collapse told from the vantage point of a speech pathologist, and "The Art of Catastrophe" an intimate portrait of his family life during quarantine.

Director Statement–“The Art of Catastrophe” It all started with my mother-in-law. She comes from a line of Italians who survived World War 2, post-war deprivations, and numerous other catastrophes. She wished her relatives had captured more of their experience. So, when we were in the midst of the first wave of COVID, she said to me, "Grab your camera! Snap out of it!".I snapped out of it. I shot nearly sixty hours of footage of my family coping with quarantine, its quiet and not so quiet terrors; food shortages, sick children, and most pressing, isolation and despair. I filmed "The Art of Catastrophe" to maintain my sanity. Everybody in my family caught the bug and started creating, painting, singing, filming with me (my four-year-old shot one clip in the film), dancing, etc. We made "The Art of Catastrophe" because we had to.In its form, "The Art of Catastrophe" is a new type of Cinema Verite film that takes inspiration from Instagram Stories as much as D.A. Pennebaker and Nanni Moretti.

Facing an impossible court case, the volatile Caleb Dodgens must overcome the hatred he has for his lawyer, his estranged brother of the last twelve years, in order to win custody of his daughter. Adam Lowder will be directing the film as well as playing Joshua opposite his co-writer and producer David Volino who will play Caleb. Production is slated to shoot for 2-3 weeks in late August/early September of this year in Texas with a budget of $75,000.


All donations received here will go towards the film's expense budget which will include: securing shooting locations such as multiple highway scenes, important set pieces like a police squad car and a Texas courtroom, the cast and crew rates, film equipment, lodging and travel for the cast and crew as well as marketing and sales preparation when the film is completed. You will be acknowledged in the film's credits if you donate with your name attached!


The aim of this creative team to do the most with the least.


The writers, director, and lead actors are all either products of divorces or grew up without the consistent presence or love of a father. The heartbeat of this project lies in a collective commitment to the authenticity of life and with the use of imagination and experience in an effort to add value to the world, this team hopes to bring to life a movie worth watching. By making this film, they will be doing the very thing this story urges its viewers to do: die to self for the good of others. The two strategies of 1) never solely vilifying or praising any one character and 2) being dedicated to human specificity, will lay the groundwork for a film with rare, hard-hitting authenticity leaving the audience with an unforgettable emotional impact.


INTENDED AUDIENCE:

"We intend to reach broken families, people who have been through divorce, experienced fatherlessness, and those who have ever loved a child. We also want those without these experiences to better empathize and understand those who have. This film is for anyone with a family or who wishes they had one. "I’m a film and video producer, with a focus on documentary and current affairs but with experience in commercial and narrative.

I have produced films for the BBC, Vice, Discovery, Channel 4, ITV and A&E, ranging in length from 5 minutes to feature length. I’ve produced shoots with large crews internationally, including Malawi, Jamaica, Germany, Holland, Canada and many states of the US, building a good trusted global network of local producers and crew. I’ve often worked on sensitive productions requiring a delicate touch, managing personalities, priorities or a constantly changing story. As Head of Production at a production company in New York, I oversaw multiple productions and budgets ranging in size from ‘let’s call in all favors’ narrative shorts to high stakes commercials such as Converse and Gucci. I enjoy both ends of the spectrum.

Since then, she played a Midwest mother opposite Russell Crowe and Sienna Miller in the Showtime limited series, The Loudest Voice, (Directed by Jeremy Podeswa) Judge Reinhold’s determined critical care nurse in the feature My Many Sons (directed by Ralph E. Portillo), and best friend and MoH in the comedy/horror film Til Death Do Us Part. On NYC stages, she appeared in the Wives of King Henry VIII: The Musical and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (NY Shakespeare Convention selection).

Rease’s passion is creating stories that promote self-acceptance, authenticity and inspiration. In following this purpose, she’s created Starving Artists, a motivational cooking show, in which she interviews NYC creatives about their artist journey, as they cook. What started out as a cooking show quickly morphed into a community on social media. In addition, alongside Mexican filmmaker Maria Otero and Columbian-American actress Stephanie Salgado, she’s developing Foreplay, a sex-positive comedy in which she plays a plus-size woman who wouldn’t know an insecurity if it bit her in the ass. As a creative creature, Rease also writes, sings, paints and photographs. She’s committed to go wherever her creative endeavors take her. When she’s not working, Rease is volunteering, singing Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” at karaoke, and dreaming of a day when she voices the first plus-size animated Disney princess.

I Don't Dream In Spanish Anymore
Logline: Strange visions send a mother-to-be on a mission to undo the curse that has plagued her family for generations.

Short Summary: ISABEL PEREZ is in her mid-thirties and expecting her first child. As a woman who suffered a painful miscarriage whose own mother died in childbirth, pregnancy is especially difficult for Isabel. She often fears what feels like a curse. Her husband, DANIEL, grows concerned when she begins sleepwalking again -- a telltale sign she is under too much stress. While working at a community center where she volunteers, Isabel encounters a distressed woman who is about 8 months pregnant. She later recognizes this woman as the spirit of her mother who died in childbirth. Against her better judgment, Isabel reaches out to her estranged grandmother, AMALIA, a secretive and abrasive woman in her late 70s. Amalia also believes Isabel was visited by her mother's spirit and that the dreams Isabel has been having while sleepwalking are warnings. Amalia confesses that she is a medium, that Isabel's mother was clairvoyant, and that Isabel appears to be both. Isabel's visions lead her to reconnect to her grandmother and face some uncomfortable truths about her past and present that she must face head-on before it is too late.

"Hi! I'm Suzanne. I'm an actress and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. My first directorial effort, short film Christmas Eve Eve: Or The Things I Can’t Remember (which I also wrote and star in) recently played at a number of festivals including the 2021 Mill Valley Film Festival. Currently, I'm producing my first feature film Every Man For Himself, directed by Gary Gardner and starring Daniel Sharman and Nicholas Logan, which is now in post production.

As an actress you might have seen me in HBO's Silicon Valley as Fiona, an AI robot who infiltrates the Pied Piper gang. Or maybe in the NBC TV show Blindspot, or the films Ricki and the Flash (dir. by Jonathan Demme), and Obvious Child (dir. by Gillian Robespierre). Recently, I starred in the hit web series, I AM YOU, which has nearly a million views and was produced by Rizzle Studios. I was honored with a best actress award for my work on the show by The International Academy of Web Television.

A Kentucky native, I received my BA in Theatre from Davidson College in North Carolina. I've spent time studying abroad with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the British American Drama Academy in London. In NYC, I've studied improv comedy and sketch writing with the Upright Citizens Brigade and scene study with renowned actress Maria Dizzia at The Freeman Studio.

"Hi! I'm Suzanne. I'm an actress and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. My first directorial effort, short film Christmas Eve Eve: Or The Things I Can’t Remember (which I also wrote and star in) recently played at a number of festivals including the 2021 Mill Valley Film Festival. You can watch it here on the platform Omeleto, one of the best hubs for high-quality short films on the internet. Currently, I'm producing my first feature film Every Man For Himself, directed by Gary Gardner and starring Daniel Sharman and Nicholas Logan, which is now in post production.

As an actress you might have seen me in HBO's Silicon Valley as Fiona, an AI robot who infiltrates the Pied Piper gang. Or maybe in the NBC TV show Blindspot, or the films Ricki and the Flash (dir. by Jonathan Demme), and Obvious Child (dir. by Gillian Robespierre). Recently, I starred in the hit web series, I AM YOU, which has nearly a million views and was produced by Rizzle Studios. I was honored with a best actress award for my work on the show by The International Academy of Web Television.

A Kentucky native, I received my BA in Theatre from Davidson College in North Carolina. I've spent time studying abroad with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the British American Drama Academy in London. In NYC, I've studied improv comedy and sketch writing with the Upright Citizens Brigade and scene study with renowned actress Maria Dizzia at The Freeman Studio.
