Akshay Ganesh and Daniel Troshin are rising high school seniors from the Bay Area. After being in the same English class their sophomore year and seeing how their teachers struggled to adapt to the fast-paced evolution of AI, they founded Deskpad to give their teachers a solution. Deskpad now has three arms: Learn, their free software for teachers, Labs, their research arm, and Policy, their policy-shaping arm. All three work together to tackle how to safely and ethically integrate AI into the classroom. Outside of Deskpad, both Akshay and Daniel are competitive athletes in their respective sports of basketball and swimming, and both love being outside and hanging out with their friends.

About my guestsDr. Suzanne L. Weekes, Ph.D., is Chief Executive Officer of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and Professor Emerita of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
She leads SIAM, an international professional society dedicated to advancing applied mathematics and computational science — the tools that power innovation in data science, engineering, technology, and scientific discovery. SIAM supports educators, students, researchers, and industry professionals through conferences, publications, and programs that connect mathematical thinking to real-world challenges. Dr. Weekes earned her Ph.D. in mathematics and scientific computing from the University of Michigan.
Before becoming SIAM’s CEO in 2021, she spent more than two decades on the faculty at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where she held multiple academic leadership roles. She is a Fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics and a recipient of the Mathematical Association of America’s
Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching. She has also received national recognition for excellence in mentoring and for leading programs that broaden participation and expand career pathways in the mathematical sciences.
Dr. Christopher Musco is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at New York University. He joined NYU after completing his Ph.D. in computer science at MIT. His research focuses on applying mathematics to the design and analysis of efficient randomized algorithms for problems across computational science, data science, and machine learning. His work has been funded by the US Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, including an NSF Early Career Award. In addition to research, Prof. Musco teaches courses at NYU in algorithms and machine learning. Prof. Musco competed in the SIAM M3 Challenge in 2008 as a high school student. His team made it to the final event in NYC and received an honorable mention. Participating in the Challenge was a formative
experience, inspiring Prof. Musco to major in applied math as an undergrad and influencing his path into research. After finishing his Ph.D., he reconnected with the M3 Challenge team in 2018 and volunteered, first as a judge, and most recently as a member of the Problem Development Committee and Lead Technical Computing Judge. About the M3 ChallengeMathWorks Math Modeling Challenge is an entirely internet-based math modeling competition with no registration or participation fees. High schools and sixth-form schools in the U.S., England, and Wales are eligible to enter teams of 3-5 students. I had a great conversation with my friend, Dr. Jerod Phillips. Dr. Jerod Phillips Sr. is the Principal of David E. Robinson Elementary School (DRE) in Magnolia, DE. He arrived at DRE in February 2023 with a zeal to engage the school community with the vision of being great for kids in all aspects of the school. Prior to arriving at DRE, Dr. Phillips was a Principal and Assistant Principal at the elementary level in Middletown, DE. He has 9 years of school leadership experience. He is passionate about developing positive public relations between the district, school, students, parents, and the overall community. As a result of Dr. Phillips’ journey from teacher to Principal, while being connected, he believes that being a connected educator can help take one’s career to unprecedented heights. Dr. Phillips was the Delaware National Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year for 2021. Dr. Phillips has had one publication in NAESP’s Principal Magazine: "Being a Bias-Conscious Leader." Principal, May/June 2022: Rewriting the Role, Volume 101, Issue 5, in addition to being a contributor to several monthly sections of the APs Rising section of the same publication. Dr. Phillips is a podcaster in the education sector, starting with three co-hosts of the podcast, Speaking Educationally in January 2020. The podcast focuses on shaking things up in education in the realm of building and maintaining highly effective and successful teams in our schools. I recently had a great chat with Dan Wolfe, an educator who has served in many roles. He is also the author of the book Becoming The Change. We had such a wonderful discussion about education, learning, constant growth, and the importance of reflection. A little about Dan: Dan grew up in Germantown, Maryland, and went to Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Florida. He has served in Pasco County, Florida for more than 25 years. During my time there he has held roles as a teacher, instructional coach, and administrator. Dan is currently an Assistant Principal at Sunray Elementary. He was selected as Pasco County’s District Teacher of the Year in the 2011-2012 school year. He is currently in the Principal’s Pool. For the past three years, Dan has written a blog called Becoming The Change which focuses on a different quote each day and how we can best apply it towards becoming the change through our own moral compass and the five areas in SEL. His first book, Becoming the Change came out in June 2022. He hopes to continue writing books and inspiring others for years to come. I have more than 5 years of experience with AI and now have been working on a dissertation, a blog, two books, and continuing to research AI. I am motivated to help educators build confidence and comfort by bringing AI learning opportunities to their classrooms. I am available for in-person or virtual PD sessions and keynotes. I can do 1-2 hour or full-day workshops.
AI is an area of deep interest for me and I want to make it easier for educators to dive in, just like I did. I teach full time and consult full time and would love to work with your school or a small group.

I had a great chat with Dr. Julie Evans about Project Tomorrow and the Speak Up Initiative. A little about Dr. Evans: Dr. Julie A. Evans is the CEO of Project Tomorrow (www.tomorrow.org) and is the founder of the heralded Speak Up Research Project which annually collects and reports on the authentic views of 400,000 K-12 students, parents, and educators on key education issues each year. Dr. Evans serves as the chief researcher on the Speak Up Project as well as leading research efforts on the impact of innovative learning models and interventions in both K-12 and higher education. Over the past 17 years, almost 6 million K-12 students, teachers, and parents have participated in the Speak Up Project representing over 35,000 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and around the world. Dr. Evans is the longest-serving woman executive in the education technology nonprofit sector. As a thought leader and influencer, she brings to new discussions insights from her experiences within the technology industry, entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, and education research. Dr. Evans is a graduate of Brown University and earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of California, San Diego, and California State University San Marcos. She serves on several boards and advisory and is a frequent speaker and writer on new learning models within education, most notably around digital learning. Prior to ReadSpeaker, Paul worked at D2L and start-up Moblmedia. He also has 14 years of education and teaching experience in Rochester, NY, specializing in Special Education and At-Risk Students. Paul attended St. Bonaventure University with degrees in History and Literacy.
We talked about ReadSpeaker which is a text-to-speech (TTS) company. With ReadSpeaker embedded into an LMS, a website, or learning content, the user can choose from 68 languages and over 245 voices. They can choose from a suite of reading and writing tools; personalize their reading speed, highlighting preferences, font, size, colors, and more; and select distraction-free “text-only” mode.
