What is this? Why be free? - Episode #1

This is the first episode of Visionary, and therefore, it’s more of an introduction than you can expect the rest of the episodes to be. Right now I just want to ask and answer the most basic things that either you are thinking or that you should be thinking.

By that I mean, I’m gonna tell you who I am, what this is, and the meaning that you are going to get out of it.

So, who am I? I’m Joy Revel. I’m someone who, up until now, has been mostly a dreamer. A dreamer of what? Well write down jobs that either require a ton of luck, or a ton of work, put them in a bowl, blindfold yourself, and pick randomly. That’s me! And really what I mean by that is that I’m the kid that has not, and will not ever give up on my dream of being a touring musician. And because I know that, I’ve learned a lot about who I am, and at my core I’m not just a musician. I’m an entertainer, a performer. And that means pretty much everything under the entertainment umbrella. That people actually enjoy.

When I say I’ve been a dreamer, though, it is somewhat untrue, because I’m willing to absolutely kill myself for the work that I do. But that’s the thing. It’s easy to sacrifice, it’s a lot less easy to work for yourself. And don’t get me wrong, I have put in work. From releasing at least part of a song every day for months to releasing a youtube video every day for a while to 10 hour rehearsals 5 days a week, I have absolutely put in work. But I’m just getting started, and with this podcast, I’m trying to make something new.

If you can’t already tell, I’m someone that’s very impulsive. You interested in animation? Tried that. Acting? I have an audition on thursday. Drawing? Yep. Just learned the steps in how to make my own clothing line, I already mentioned youtube, music production, songwriting. Or, on the other side of things, I technically have a business, I know marketing, a bit of investing, a bit of the penny-stock trading that the entrepreneurs of youtube are so obsessed with. I know everything there is to know about fandom and social media. I’m from New York City, and I love it very much.

What is this for? Like I said, I’ve spent a lot of time sure of who I am. And the thing is, when you’re an artist not making art, when you’re a creator that’s not creating, your mind goes off in a lot of different directions. Namely, wondering about things you have no control over, like why we’re all here and what meaning truly is and life and philosophy things, and then you’re also thinking of how to be successful in general, how to be successful at your particular craft, and of course how you feel about yourself and human nature in general because of your actions. Or maybe that’s just me.

Either way, this podcast is for the modern creators, artists, and thinkers. Not that I think I’m the best, by far. But I have spent hours and hours and hours thinking about this stuff, for better or for worse, and it’s about time we all start talking instead of just thinking. Because with everything being about content nowadays, shouldn’t there be more than a thousand ‘5 tips on how to up your instagram engagement’ and stuff that’s for businesses trying to make money? Shouldn’t there be a place for the people behind the content to stop for a second and think?

Not in this world. At least, not to a lot of people. Everything is so fast paced, it really does seem like the ideal creative is not an artist, like in every other time in human history, but practically a machine, who doesn’t think, just creates, and tries desperately to cling to a one-hit-wonder run culture.

I don’t like that idea. And more than that, I’ve tried to be that idea, and guess what? It doesn’t work. Which should be obvious, right? Because we’re not machines, we’re people, no matter which we want to be.

So what do you get out of this podcast? Food for thought, I hope. Inspiration, I really hope. Honestly, I just really want to create some conversation, some communication between who I think are some of the loneliest and most self-deprecating group of people out there. And I’m not saying that because of the stereotype of artists being depressed and strung out, craving for something to fit their soul just right. I’m saying it because I spent like 8 years thinking that I should make myself miserable so I’d be a better artist. And I know I’m not the only one. And even if you’re not one of those kinds of creatives, even if you’re not a creative at all, hopefully you want to be a success story, and we’re talking about that too. I’d love to create a little community for people caught in the same thought loops. Maybe we’ll break eachother out of it, all be a little more free, and possibly even a little more productive. Everyone thinks about being successful and meaning and wanting their life to be valuable. So who knows? Maybe you’ll find some opportunity here.

So, that’s the deal. I’m Revel, this podcast is about your thoughts and what you’re trying to do (which you can be absolutely sure of if you’ve made it this far,) and Visionary is the podcast you listen to to inspire your thinking, and maybe even what you create.

Thanks for being here :)

<itunes:author>Joy Motz</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>This is the first episode of Visionary, and therefore, it’s more of an introduction than you can expect the rest of the episodes to be.
