I am from Southgate, MI and I am a student at Saginaw Valley State University. Throughout this entire semester I have been studying Saginaw County and the different priority needs throughout the community. According to Saginaw County’s Health Needs assessment some things that need major focus are obesity specifically childhood obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, dental health, and many more. Today, my goal is to inform you on the obesity rates, and what we can do to lower these rates. First of all, obesity is defined as a medical condition that occurs when a person carries excess weight or body fat that may affect their health. A doctor would suggest that a person has obesity if they have a high body mass index. A body mass index of 30 or over usually suggests that a person is obese. Obesity, specifically childhood obesity, is becoming more and more of a problem in Saginaw county according to statistics. Saginaw county has a 38.9% obesity rate, compared to the 31.5% overall obesity rate for the state, leaving Saginaw county the most obese county in the state of Michigan, according to the CDC. Obesity not only leads to low self esteem and lower self image, but it can lead to a variety of other different health complications as well such as: heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, and much more! There is no simple solution to the obesity epidemic, but there are steps we can take as a community to help lower these rates and improve our overall health. Maintaining a healthy weight is obviously the key to avoiding obesity. I understand this can be tough, especially because of all the different delicious fast food and restaurant options in Saginaw county. But, it is important to fuel our body with proper nutrients and avoid sugary and high fat foods as much as possible. Some ways to promote healthy eating behaviors are providing vegetables, fruits, and whole grain options in the household for children to grab, serve properly sized portions for each meal, encourage the intake of water, limit sugar and saturated fat intake, avoid eating fast food more than once a week, and meal prep to avoid resulting to fast food when in a rush. These are some simple steps to promote healthy behavior for not only your children, but your entire household. It may be hard to implement all of these things at once into your household, but trying to make small changes every day, can lead to success. Helping children stay active is another way to help prevent childhood obesity. According to the CDC, children should partake in 30-60 minutes of physical activity at least 5 days of the week. One way to get children more involved, is to get the entire family involved. Children mimic adults, therefore adding physical activity to your daily routine can motivate your child to want to join you. Physical activity doesn’t always have to be running, or partaking in exercise that is unenjoyable. Some more enjoyable forms of physical activity may consist of walking or hiking, playing a game of tag, jump roping, playing soccer or basketball in the park, swimming, dancing, walking the dog, etc. Physical Activity and just staying active plays a huge role in reducing childhood obesity. Implementing some of these habits into your everyday routine will not only help to lower your child’s risk of childhood obesity, but it will also help to improve your child’s overall health. Although these things are a lot easier said than done, all it takes is a little motivation and the drive to want to adopt this lifestyle for you and your family. In the long run, it will all pay off. Not only does a healthy lifestyle prevent obesity, but it also helps to prevent a lot of other things as well as improve the overall quality of life. For any more questions or concerns about obesity, contact Saginaw County’s Public Health Department at 989-758-3800.
