Strong on the ball and big on heart, Bo chose to ply his collegiate trade at then-Memphis State University (10 goals, 8 assists in just 20 games) before a professional career was too good of a choice to turn down.

Bo talks about the Memphis Rogues, the Memphis Americans and his goal scoring exploits as a Kangaroo.

Although Steve did not have a long professional career, it was successful and eventful.  He played during an incredible period of the North American Soccer League alongside teammates George Best, German legend Gerd Muller & the "Peruvian Pele' " Teofilo Cubillas.  

Steve's soccer story is very similar to one of our previous guests, the late John Houska. Click here for the interview we did with John. Zerhusen and Houska grew up together from elementary school aged, played for the same high school, and were crosstown collegiate rivals.  In addition to his own career stories, Steve takes a few moments give a testament to the abilities and the character of Houska.

Brodee and Tim chat with Guidry about how the military and soccer have a very long, special relationship, even providing avenues for potential professional players.  For him, serving his country and growing the game are lifelong passions.  

Guidry wants to continue to grow the game even after his military service has ended.  In addition to coaching and camps for military personnel and families, Josh also boasts a very impressive line of high level goalkeeping gloves & training gear found at gluprousa.com.  The products are endorsed and worn by professional and elite amateur goalkeepers across the US and the UK.

Maybe his on-field soccer stats haven't blown up like some of the artists he's promoted, but he is no less engaged- even designing his club's kits! When he's on the pitch, he's on a bike.  The guys ask him about his new hobby, cycling.

A pair of England national team players have been sent home for breaking quarantine protocol.  The guys will tell you whose bubble burst.

The Lionel Messi saga was short but intense.  Tim & Brodee an update on his 2020-21 plans and a guess at what's next.

A critical four-day span for USL Championship side Memphis 901 FC.  They'll take on North Carolina FC twice with both clubs needing wins, not draws, to push for the playoffs.

Wins would be a great present as we say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to 901 FC Head Coach Tim Mulqueen!

Before we go, it is with deep sadness we tell you that friend of the podcast & Memphis Rogues goalkeeper John Houska has passed away this week.  He was an aggressive goalkeeper during his amazing career at Loyola University Maryland & was in goal on that historic night vs New York Cosmos, shutting them out 1-0 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Houska was also the face of the team, always taking time to make personal appearances at youth clinics and other events around Memphis. John was still full of that same energy and hope when we recently spoke with him. His personality really shines through in our podcast chat, which you can listen to here.

John Houska was 64.  He will be missed by his surviving family, friends, and the generation of kids he impacted in Memphis.

Winner of two FIFA Women's World Cups (1999 & 2015) & three Olympic Gold Medals (2004, 2008 & 2012) with the United States Women's National Team, Rampone is also known as a successful coach, FOX Sports Soccer Analyst, and proud parent.

Speaking of Europe, Champions League knockout stages wrap up for the rest of the round of 16 this weekend.  Four of the eight teams have already punched their tickets to the quarter-finals.  

It's the same story for the Europa League.  Some familiar names have locked in a spot in the final eight.

MLS will have its Orlando tournament Final on Tuesday, August 11th.

The USL Championship continues its regular season with eight highly competitive groups.  This week's guest Akeem Ward and North Carolina FC visit Memphis 901 FC on Saturday, August 8.  Pete Pranica and our own Tim Van Horn will have the television call.  The match can be seen on ESPN+, ESPN Deportes & CW 30 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Kyle Morton, a Philadelphia Union youth system alum, hasn't been shy about putting in the work needed to grow his game.  He talks about how the PDL gave the opportunity to get additional minutes to better learn the game.

 As the shutdown continued, it became apparent that training would have to be done away from the pitch.  Enzo told Tim how training became an individual responsibility.  He credits Head Coach Mike Jeffries and staff for maintaining a team camaraderie, focused on both physical and mental well-being.  

The former Colorado Rapid and UNC Tar Heel is not only talented on the pitch, but he's got DIY skills, too!  Enzo clues Tim in on what he learned to do with some of his down time.

Teams are back to training.  The USL Championship is expected to return July 11th with a unique eight group format.  Each club will have 16 regular season matches, with the top two clubs in each group heading to the playoffs.  Charlotte with play in Group G with Birmingham Legion, North Carolina FC, and Memphis 901 FC.  They are scheduled to open play outside of the group against Miami FC on July 22nd.  Martinez explains how this restart is different than the original preseason in February.

The NWSL Challenge Cup, located in Utah,  is set to begin Saturday, June 27th.  The opening match will feature the North Carolina Courage versus the Portland Thorns.  Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. central time, airing on CBS.  The tournament will run through July 26th.  The finale will also air on CBS.  Tim & Brodee share how you can see the remainder of the tournament for free.  They'll also talk about the tournament's format.

UPDATE:  Due to several positive COVID-19 tests, the Orlando Pride have decided to not participate in the Challenge Cup.

Major League Soccer is expected to return July 8th.  The tournament will be located in Orlando, Florida.  The group stage will feature five groups of four teams and a sixth group with six teams.  The guys give an overview of the tourney.

Last week saw the official birth of the MLS Black Players Coalition.  Tim & Brodee discuss some of the reasoning behind its formation & how its existence could be critical to growing the game.

The NWSL Challenge Cup, located in Utah,  is set to begin Saturday, June 27th.  The opening match will feature the North Carolina Courage versus the Portland Thorns.  Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. central time, airing on CBS.  The tournament will run through July 26th.  The finale will also air on CBS.  Tim & Brodee share how you can see the remainder of the tournament for free.  They'll also talk about the tournament's format.

UPDATE:  Due to several positive COVID-19 tests, the Orlando Pride have decided to not participate in the Challenge Cup.

Major League Soccer is expected to return July 8th.  The tournament will be located in Orlando, Florida.  The group stage will feature five groups of four teams and a sixth group with six teams.  The guys give an overview of the tourney.

Last week saw the official birth of the MLS Black Players Coalition.  Tim & Brodee discuss some of the reasoning behind its formation & how its existence could be critical to growing the game.

The announcement of the return of soccer, combined with progression to small group training, has Tim Mulqueen more excited than ever.   Coach tells Tim and Brodee about the drills designed specifically to adhere to local health guidelines.  It's uncharted territory for nearly every coach, but Mulqueen says the players are responding well to training.

While Mulqueen speaks proudly of the skill of his club, he is especially proud of the team's genuine respect and empathy for others.    He chalks it up to the character of the players and the off-pitch leadership of Tim Howard.

Despite not having a national broadcasting deal, indoor soccer remains a part of the American sporting fabric.  Teams and leagues have come and gone, yet the loyal fan following has remained strong in several cities for four decades.

Kevin Healey grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and played soccer in high school and college with previous podcast guest, Memphis Rogues & Cleveland Force goalkeeper John Houska.  During his collegiate playing stint, he won a National Championship at Loyola University Maryland.  Healey then embarked on a coaching career. 
 He had success developing championship teams in both outdoor and indoor soccer.  While Kevin is quick to credit his players, he has been frequently recognized in various leagues with numerous Coach of the Year honors. He is proud of the youth development he's seen as Club President for the Baltimore Bays.

Kevin's success earned him the trust to lead off the pitch affairs, too.  Healey served several seasons as Coach and General Manager of the legendary Baltimore Blast.  Recently, he joined the Harrisburg as Team President, overseeing operations as son Pat-an accomplished professional player-coaches the club. Kevin takes great pride in working with his son.  The elder Healey talks about the sports shutdown & how it impacts his club.

Despite not having a national broadcasting deal, indoor soccer remains a part of the American sporting fabric.  Teams and leagues have come and gone, yet the loyal fan following has remained strong in several cities for four decades.

Kevin Healey grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and played soccer in high school and college with previous podcast guest, Memphis Rogues & Cleveland Force goalkeeper John Houska.  During his collegiate playing stint, he won a National Championship at Loyola University Maryland.  Healey then embarked on a coaching career. 
 He had success developing championship teams in both outdoor and indoor soccer.  While Kevin is quick to credit his players, he has been frequently recognized in various leagues with numerous Coach of the Year honors. He is proud of the youth development he's seen as Club President for the Baltimore Bays.

Kevin's success earned him the trust to lead off the pitch affairs, too.  Healey served several seasons as Coach and General Manager of the legendary Baltimore Blast.  Recently, he joined the Harrisburg as Team President, overseeing operations as son Pat-an accomplished professional player-coaches the club. Kevin takes great pride in working with his son.  The elder Healey talks about the sports shutdown & how it impacts his club.

Pirmann left no doubt about his leadership abilities during his next stop.  He led Detroit City FC to a 49-17-17 record in the NPSL (now in NISA), routinely drawing crowds of over 6,000.  He is remembered fondly by the DCFC faithful.

At Memphis 901 FC, Pirmann continues to take pride in his work on the tactical side of the game.  He discusses the necessary adjustments to coaching that come with the current sports shutdown.

The series' original aim was to follow the just-relegated club in its attempt to return to the Premier League.  Although Sunderland have had past glory, we now see them fighting for stability on the pitch and the balance sheet.  Brodee and Tim discuss the show beyond the wins and losses.  Despite the revolving door in the manager's office and board room Sunderland maintain an admirable fan base.  Despite the club's lean times, the guys also discuss why it might be easy to cheer for the Black Cats.  Sunderland Til I Die is a must watch for soccer fans.

There was some other news occurring around the soccer world.  The Bundesliga has announced they want to restart play as early as May 9th, behind closed doors if necessary.  Tim, who took German in high school and college, believes this is called "Geisterspiele." As you'd expect, there was a strong reaction one way or the other from fans.  

One faction of opposition dislikes the concept of empty stadium matches.  Others feel the medical & safety personnel needed on match day could be used better elsewhere.

Some of those in favor of an early May restart crave a sense of normalcy.  Also, Kicker magazine estimates 13 of the 36 clubs in the top 2 divisions would become insolvent if the season does not restart.  This would be an economic blow for several communities.

In other news,  ESPN's soccer website reports that La Liga is helping in the search for a coronavirus solution.  The league has a supercomputer that is usually dedicated solely to fighting online piracy of league matches.  Tim and Brodee discuss how powerful this computer is and how it's now helping scientists.

The series' original aim was to follow the just-relegated club in its attempt to return to the Premier League.  Although Sunderland have had past glory, we now see them fighting for stability on the pitch and the balance sheet.  Brodee and Tim discuss the show beyond the wins and losses.  Despite the revolving door in the manager's office and board room Sunderland maintain an admirable fan base.  Despite the club's lean times, the guys also discuss why it might be easy to cheer for the Black Cats.  Sunderland Til I Die is a must watch for soccer fans.

There was some other news occurring around the soccer world.  The Bundesliga has announced they want to restart play as early as May 9th, behind closed doors if necessary.  Tim, who took German in high school and college, believes this is called "Geisterspiele." As you'd expect, there was a strong reaction one way or the other from fans.  

One faction of opposition dislikes the concept of empty stadium matches.  Others feel the medical & safety personnel needed on match day could be used better elsewhere.

Some of those in favor of an early May restart crave a sense of normalcy.  Also, Kicker magazine estimates 13 of the 36 clubs in the top 2 divisions would become insolvent if the season does not restart.  This would be an economic blow for several communities.

In other news,  ESPN's soccer website reports that La Liga is helping in the search for a coronavirus solution.  The league has a supercomputer that is usually dedicated solely to fighting online piracy of league matches.  Tim and Brodee discuss how powerful this computer is and how it's now helping scientists.

After the coronavirus crisis spurred the stoppage of sports, teams at all levels are coping with more than the loss of matches.  At the collegiate level, Spring soccer practice (as a group) cannot happen.  Scrimmages are forbidden.  

Despite the inability to gather on a pitch, Ross believes his team continues to develop in the off-season.  He talks about the creative ways his players and coaches continue to prepare for the start of the 2020 Fall season.  Even in these difficult times, Paule believes his team can improve in the tactical and mental aspects of the game.  He explains how.

Soccer leagues around the world have suspended their seasons due to the Coronavirus.  The USL Championship, where Memphis 901 FC plays, is among those halting play in hopes of limiting infections.  Currently, play is suspended through May 10.  In keeping with accepted best practices, Coach Mulqueen joins the podcast by phone.
Coach, also known as "Mulch", tells the guys that it's a very busy time for the club.  Although there are no matches at the moment, Mulqueen discusses how this is not a vacation time for the players.  He describes how his staff are helping players be prepared for whenever the next match comes.

Although there was just one regular season match before the stoppage, there was plenty to discuss.  The preseason seemed uneventful, because much of it was conducted out of ton.  Mulqueen reveals it was far from routine.  He shares his opinion on training on the Gulf Coast and how the team developed on and away from the pitch.  Many thought that the change of venue was the biggest story of the preseason.  Days before the season opener however, we all learned a certain legend at the club and national level would be the starting goalkeeper.  Coach Mulqueen discusses how the club "hid" Tim Howard in the preseason.

In the offseason Howard, fellow owner Craig Unger and Coach Tim Mulqueen were confident the 2020 squad would become playoff contenders.  The opening (and so far ONLY) match of the season proved their faith to be well placed.  Memphis 901 FC played Eastern Conference finalist Indy Eleven.  Mulqueen talks about the match.  He shares his opinion of the team's performance, and what he told his team after the match.  He even tells Tim and Brodee what opposing coach Martin Rennie said in the post-match handshake.

Mayor Strickland provides insight into the current situation in the city and why he feels the order was necessary.  Strickland told Tim that he speaks with the Health Department daily to monitor the spread of the virus.  He talked about how the dynamic changed with the occurrence of "community spread" and the likely reasons for the increased number of infections locally.  

Acknowledging what is a difficult situation for everyone, Strickland expressed empathy for those negatively impacted by the order.  He also talked about the decision making process and the advice he received from the medical community.  He gave several local and national examples of the medical professionals and organizations.  
 
Mayor Strickland reviewed some of the activities residents are able to do during this stay-at-home period.  He encouraged everyone to use the city's special COVID-19 website for complete details on the order and additional information about the virus.

Tim Van Horn and Brodee Scott discuss the timeline of the buildup to this historic event as Coronavirus has league play stopped in an abundance of caution.  Positive virus test results have directly impacted some teams, causing the rest of the league to close up shop.  Still other leagues were forced to close by government mandate.  Regardless of the reason, soccer has come to a virtual halt.  First overseas.  Then MLS and USL.

While many leagues are projecting a 30 day suspension of play, the return date is far from a guarantee. What is guaranteed is more My 3 Subs action!

Another group hit hard by stoppage of play sits in the broadcast booth.  Although there are some play-by-play announcers and color analysts on salary with their respective teams, the majority of sports broadcasters are contract labor.  No game, no pay.  With so many sports shut, the current options for work are next to nothing. 
In the unique position of having worked as a play-by-play and color broadcaster, Tim shares the depth of his respect and sympathy for the ones who "paint the picture" for us all.

Play Where You Stay is a developmental soccer program for kids in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. This Memphis-based organization connects soccer coaches and equipment with children and open space.  In order maximize available space and funding, they identify disused lots or park space within neighborhoods and set up weekday afternoons.

It costs $10/week for as much coaching and as many days as kids want. That means he or she can come up to 5 days a week. Enrollment is rolling, which means players can sign up to join whenever their schedule allows. No one is turned away who can’t pay.

Ellen and Bernardo talk about the early growth of the program.  It is expanding to many more fields.  Despite its short history, the organization has already witnessed stories of team and personal triumphs.  Because of its rapid growth, donations of time, equipment and money are needed.  Ellen and Bernardo tell the guys how listeners can help.

After his first campaign, his role with the team evolved.  Because of his willingness to put the team first, Greer proved himself to be talented and versatile.

Despite injuries and a position change, Greer earned recognition as well as looks from the professional level. 

As a pro, JJ Greer gained a reputation as a reliable player with a strong work ethic.  Besides time in the Portland Timbers organization, he  also plied his trade with multiple clubs, including Charlotte Eagles, Colorado Springs Switchbacks, and Phoenix Rising.  JJ tells Tim and Brodee about a few of the legends who he teamed with during his career.

Tim Van Horn & Brodee Scott chat with Carey about his soccer roots, which run deep in his family.  Although he didn't earn a spot from an early soccer tryout, Talley made the team the next season.  He hasn't looked back since!

Despite that initial setback, Talley became a standout on his club and high school teams.  His strong work ethic and overall skill made him a valuable and versatile option on the pitch, earning him the chance to represent his country.  He played for the United States Under 17, Under 20 and Under 23 teams.  Several college scholarship offers followed.

After experience success and growth in his game at The University of North Carolina, Talley headed for his next challenge.  Carey takes us inside Draft Day, and what it was like to be a rookie on a veteran-filled team, DC United.  

He tasted team success early, as DC United defeated legendary Brazilian side Vasco da Gama to win the Copa Interamericana. That same year, United edged Toluca to win the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. Talley then got to raise the MLS Cup in 1999, defeating the LA Galaxy.

His reputation as a reliable passer and defender fueled a successful career that spanned over a decade.  

Following his retirement Carey Talley, whose parents have played a major role in the creation of this region's largest soccer complex, is continuing to grow the game himself.  He holds an "A" coaching license and is active in developing the next generation of players.

We congratulate Carey for his recent induction into the Tennessee State Soccer Association Hall of Fame!  He joins recent podcast guest and 2017 Inductee Richard Mulrooney.

Although he had never seen a soccer match, Bob Brame was one of the original radio broadcasters.  Brame talks about some big matches and how his play-by-play partner once left the press box in the middle of a match and never came back!  Bob was the entertaining eyes and ears of Memphis Rogues soccer.

Hal Downing worked in Ticket Sales and establishing the original Booster Club.  Downing was the figurative hands and feet of the club.  Not only did he arrange Booster Club events, he also developed and facilitated youth soccer clinics around the city.

Many people got their first taste of professional soccer in the Memphis, Tennessee and Mid-South area thanks to the work of this week's three guests.

Success in high school and club soccer was followed by a terrific collegiate career. 
Some might think an injury would make college selection more complicated, but it was the opposite for Richard Mulrooney.  The Creighton University alum explains why becoming a Blue Jay was the right choice for him.  

Richard Mulrooney chose Creighton. Then San Jose chose Richard Mulrooney.  He talks about the Major League Soccer Draft and becoming a professional player.  He enjoyed great success in San Jose.  Numerous team and individual honors rolled in.  When things seemed to be going great, they got even better.  Mulrooney earned his first cap with the national team.  Brodee and Tim talk with him about being part of a squad that was poised for a successful stretch of international play.

Richard's play garnered him continued respect, despite a moves to other clubs and an injury.   He earned Comeback Player of the Year while at FC Dallas and helped Houston win an MLS Cup.  Mulrooney was recently honored in San Jose.  He was inducted into the Earthquakes Hall of Fame.

Richard Mulrooney talks about the transition from Champion and All-Star to Head Coach.  He has been at the helm of the University of Memphis Men's Soccer team for six seasons.  After narrowly missing the NCAA tournament, Mulrooney is determined to lead his team there in 2020.

Success in high school and club soccer was followed by a terrific collegiate career. 
Some might think an injury would make college selection more complicated, but it was the opposite for Richard Mulrooney.  The Creighton University alum explains why becoming a Blue Jay was the right choice for him.  

Richard Mulrooney chose Creighton. Then San Jose chose Richard Mulrooney.  He talks about the Major League Soccer Draft and becoming a professional player.  He enjoyed great success in San Jose.  Numerous team and individual honors rolled in.  When things seemed to be going great, they got even better.  Mulrooney earned his first cap with the national team.  Brodee and Tim talk with him about being part of a squad that was poised for a successful stretch of international play.

Richard's play garnered him continued respect, despite a moves to other clubs and an injury.   He earned Comeback Player of the Year while at FC Dallas and helped Houston win an MLS Cup.  Mulrooney was recently honored in San Jose.  He was inducted into the Earthquakes Hall of Fame.

Richard Mulrooney talks about the transition from Champion and All-Star to Head Coach.  He has been at the helm of the University of Memphis Men's Soccer team for six seasons.  After narrowly missing the NCAA tournament, Mulrooney is determined to lead his team there in 2020.

The Transfer Window has closed for most leagues, but the fact that Major League Soccer hasn't begun theirs means there might be just a bit more business left to conduct.  At least one more Premier League player is heading to MLS.  This time, it's not to Los Angeles but to Nashville!  News plus a recap of who shined through the transfer window and who simply left smudges.  Brodee and Tim will also review who needs more than a bag of ice in this episode's Injury Report.

The sports world lost a basketball superstar, who was also a massive soccer fan, in a tragic weekend accident.  Brodee and Tim talk about Kobe Bryant the soccer fan.  Why was he a fan? When did he become a fan? Which team did he support?  Bryant was friend of the soccer world who will be missed.
