Tammy Kaehler: I've always been a writer in my career. I started out in college admissions actually, strangely enough. But I gravitated to any of the writing or the publication tasks in that job. And then I had the good fortune to be hired as a technical writer by a manager who was looking for someone who wasn't actually technical, but could translate. And that sort of launched me into a tech writing career. I was very active writing websites and things for the web 1.0 version, when all of a sudden everyone needed a website and no one had anything. And I specialized in small technical companies. So I've continued that. I still do a lot of web content these days. Everyone needs web content, got to have content got to have content. So I do a lot of that kind of writing.



Tammy Kaehler: But fiction didn't come along because I was not one of those kids scribbling stories or writing all the time. Never wrote fiction. I'd have told you I couldn't write fiction.



Robert Earl: Really?



Tammy Kaehler: Yeah. Yeah. Strange. Here is the announcement from the team. Jay Howard Driver Development (JHDD) is delighted to announce that Wyatt Brichacek will be joining the team’s Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship outfit for the 2020 season.



Having competed for JHDD’s F4 US Championship team in 2018 and 2019, Brichacek also made his Cooper Tires USF2000 debut at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca for the season finale back in September.  After demonstrating consistent top-10 pace throughout the event, the logical progression for the young American is to compete full time on the Road to Indy in 2020. 



“I am very excited to be taking the next step in my career with a team I am already very comfortable with,” said an excited Brichacek. “I learned a lot in 2019 and combined with the teams noteworthy first year on the Road to Indy, it’s looking like 2020 will be a very successful year. The first round of the USF2000 championship can’t come soon enough!”

“Team expands to three cars”



Episode 17 – With the start of the 2020 race season still over four months away, HMD Motorsports continues to make strides on their growing program. With the move of the team to the Indianapolis, Indiana area and the hiring of an experienced staff, the team is happy to announce that David Malukas will be back for his sophomore Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship season.



“We are very happy to have David back in 2020,” explained Team Manager John Cummiskey. “2019 was a great learning year for David, and he was able to gather podium results in Austin as well as on the oval in St. Louis. Returning for 2020 with renewed focus, energy and experience by his side, David will be a contender for the series title as we head towards Laguna Seca next September.” 



Only 18 years of age, Malukas has been on a meteoric rise through the Road to Indy. Competing in only a handful of Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship events where he showed his speed right away, the Chicago, Illinois resident became a victor in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship in 2018 with a dominating event weekend at Road America and proved that was no fluke with a win in Portland. 2019 saw another step up in series to Indy Lights where he was an instant top-five runner and managed to find his way to the podium on two occasions. 



“To say I was happy with my 2019 season would be a lie,” added David Malukas. “I want to win, but also know that I was against a steep learning curve. I took each and every session, each and every lap and the highs and the lows of the season all in stride and gained experience along the way.



The team made some big administrative changes behind the scenes and at least one of the HMD drivers were on the podium in the final five event weekends of the season so I am confident that 2020 will bring success.” Malukas is set to take on the upcoming series test at the Sebring International Raceway December 11th and 12th in his final test before the holiday season.

Competing in only a handful of Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship events where he showed his speed right away, the Chicago, Illinois resident became a victor in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship in 2018 with a dominating event weekend at Road America and proved that was no fluke with a win in Portland. 2019 saw another step up in series to Indy Lights where he was an instant top-five runner and managed to find his way to the podium on two occasions.  “To say I was happy with my 2019 season would be a lie,” added David Malukas. “I want to win, but also know that I was against a steep learning curve. I took each and every session, each and every lap and the highs and the lows of the season all in stride and gained experience along the way. Marshall Pruett in Racer Magazine spelled out the title-clinching scenarios for each driver. Newgarden has to finish 5th or better without any bonus points, even with a Rossi victory and no bonus points for Rossi. If Rossi takes the pole and leads the most laps then Newgarden has to finish 4th or better.

In 2018, Christian finished third in the F4 US Championship with the most victories by any driver during the year. He has followed up his stint in F4 with a strong showing in USF2000.



Christian is backed by the Danish Federation and Dansk Metal and is excited to see what 2020 has in store for his racing career.



He started in go-karts at the age of 5 in Denmark. It was a natural step considering that his father was involved in the automotive industry. We talk about the opportunities that he had in Europe and how he has made his racing budget stretch in the United States and how he enjoys living and competing stateside.



Part of that allure stateside is the Indy 500. Christian got to experience the race first hand this year and it was a spectacle that he will never forget.

Kaminsky currently sits 4th in the USF2000 season standings after posting two solid 4th place finishes at Portland International Raceway.



We talk about the race weekend at Portland. The season points championship and we look ahead to the challenge of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.



Colin has to be ready for the last two races of the season as he finds himself just 4 points out of 3rd place, only trailing Darren Keane in the standings. While he looks to challenge Keane, he also has to be aware of Christian Rasmussen that is right on his heels, just 12 points behind.



After finishing 10th in the 2018 standings, Kaminsky has shown great improvement this season running for Pabst Racing. His teammate, Hunter McElrea is currently leading the points by 6 points and we talk about having Hunter as a teammate and the challenge presented by chasing a successful team like Cape Motorsports.



I think you will find Colin to be as engaging as I did. We also touch upon the challenges of balancing racing with college classes and time management.



We even through in a little hockey talk as Colin is a High School and College hockey goaltender. Thankfully he is a Chicago Blackhawks fan and has not started rooting for the Penguins yet, even though he is in Pittsburgh for school. And speaking of Chicago, we talk Portillos.

Tonight at Worldwide Technology Raceway at Gateway, Newgarden had another late-race "event" happen to him or his car. Event was not his term, it was mine. But Josef understood exactly what I was asking when I made reference to the events that left points on the table at three of the past four races.



I asked: "Consider the events in Toronto, Mid Ohio, and the last lap spin at Gateway, You have tried to give other drivers opening and points, and yet you have increased your lead. Do you feel like you're playing with house money as you head into the final two races of the championship?"



Josef answered like a true professional that has won the championship before.



The Earl asks Josef Newgarden is he is playing with house money heading into the final two races.



Well, I mean, I don't think we can feel too confident or secure where we're at. I really don't. I think we're in a good spot, without a doubt. It would be silly to not recognize it's a good position.It's not something that you can just sit back and rest on. It's going to be tough the last two rounds. I wish we could have gotten a little bit more here the last three races. For sure Mid-Ohio, you look at that and say it was what it was. If I would have done a better job, that would have helped. Pocono could have been a little better. Here definitely could have been a little better.We've not had a smooth last three races. We've got to clean that up now for the final two. I think we're in a good position, but we can't do anything different than what we've been doing all year. We have to keep sort of attacking with some caution I think. Josef Newgarden – Team Penske

Once they fell out of the lead after the first 50 laps, they settled into an intelligent, big-picture approach.

Nowhere what this more evident than when Team Penske President Tim Cindric called the #2 PPG car into the pits for a late fuel stop to ensure that Newgarden could make it to the end. At the time, I noted that this was a championship move, especially versus the no pit strategy of Alexander Rossi that came back to bite him.



Rossi was forced to pit under green with around 20 laps yet to go, costing him a lap in the race and ultimately a number of positions and points that he was unable to gain on Newgarden.



Even after the last lap spin of Newgarden, Rossi fell further behind.



It may not be House Money that Josef Newgarden has at this point in the season, but he truly has to feel like he is in a good spot. But Josef understood exactly what I was asking when I made reference to the events that left points on the table at three of the past four races. I asked: "Consider the events in Toronto, Mid Ohio, and the last lap spin at Gateway, You have tried to give other drivers opening and points, and yet you have increased your lead. Do you feel like you're playing with house money as you head into the final two races of the championship?" Josef answered like a true professional that has won the championship before.
