Get a pen or pencil and paper. Now draw freehand a light circle shape (or as circular as you can get). Within the circle, write the names of the people with whom you are already close. These are the members of your circle who impact you and lift you up and for whom you do the same. They may be living or dead, geographically near or far, or anyone to whom you already feel close. 

Then, on and around the edges of your circle, write the names of some more marginal relationships you might put intention into deepening this year. Is there someone new at church you don’t know well yet? Is there someone you often see at the grocery store or coffee shop you’ve never said hello to? Is there a person who was once a close friend, but at some point, you experienced tension or a falling out? Is there someone unhoused or struggling in your neighborhood? Pray for God’s guidance and invite at least one of these people out for coffee or time to get to know them better. Thinking about today’s environment and how many families and children are afraid to leave their homes—to travel, to simply live and thrive—is disheartening. Many are overwhelmed by fear and the loss of freedom, no matter if they are U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, documented, or undocumented. The welfare of those who are labeled different carries a burden to simply exist and the right to experience freedom as whole persons in Jesus Christ.

United Women in Faith, we believe that every person is created in the image of God and should have equal rights, no matter their location, identity, religion, or status. For 156 years, we have been working for justice and advocating for change to policies or systems that prevent all God’s children from thriving. If you look back over our history, our foremothers were part of every movement for equal and civil rights and peace building in society and the church.

Recently, at our senior leadership team meeting, I shared a devotional reading titled “We Have Work to Do,” from Vincent Harding. He had just shared with young people at a Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., observance, when a young man asked, “If Dr. King knew his life was at risk, why didn’t he step back? Why didn’t he just chill out?” Before Harding responded, a young woman spoke up with great wisdom, saying, “Dr. King couldn’t just chill out. He knew he had work to do!”

My sisters and anyone reading this column, United Women in Faith must continue to do the hard work of advocating and seeking justice for the oppressed and the marginalized. Like King, who risked his life for God’s call to all, we must love kindness, seek justice, and walk humbly with God. Jesus also risked his life to overcome roadblocks of difference and evil that prevented the vulnerable from being part of the body of God. Micah 6:8 and Jesus’ advocacy for the vulnerable and challenging unjust systems tells us what is right in the eyes of God.

As United Methodists, we vow to resist evil in all its forms, through the sacrament of baptism and reaffirmation. Until unjust systems, policies, and actions at the federal, state, and local levels of our country afford human and civil rights to all, we have work to do for God’s kin-dom to come on earth as it is in heaven. This July 4, Independence Day, let’s commit to engage with more zeal, putting our love in action through our social justice priorities: Ending Mass Incarceration and Criminalization of Communities of Color, and Climate Justice.

Martin Luther King, Jr., observance, when a young man asked, “If Dr. King knew his life was at risk, why didn’t he step back? Why didn’t he just chill out?” Before Harding responded, a young woman spoke up with great wisdom, saying, “Dr. King couldn’t just chill out. He knew he had work to do!”

My sisters and anyone reading this column, United Women in Faith must continue to do the hard work of advocating and seeking justice for the oppressed and the marginalized. Like King, who risked his life for God’s call to all, we must love kindness, seek justice, and walk humbly with God. Jesus also risked his life to overcome roadblocks of difference and evil that prevented the vulnerable from being part of the body of God. Micah 6:8 and Jesus’ advocacy for the vulnerable and challenging unjust systems tells us what is right in the eyes of God.

As United Methodists, we vow to resist evil in all its forms, through the sacrament of baptism and reaffirmation. Until unjust systems, policies, and actions at the federal, state, and local levels of our country afford human and civil rights to all, we have work to do for God’s kin-dom to come on earth as it is in heaven. This July 4, Independence Day, let’s commit to engage with more zeal, putting our love in action through our social justice priorities: Ending Mass Incarceration and Criminalization of Communities of Color, and Climate Justice.

With that biblical guidance, I believe that to go “faithfully forward” is to prayerfully set a goal, work hard to reach it, and then have the faith to know that the Holy Spirit is right beside us every step of the way, guiding us to victory. However, it can still be a little scary. And often fear of the unknown or of the challenges we face can keep us from being able to see God’s promises.
The path we plan to take to reach our goal can also change without notice and then we must adapt. That can be hard to do. We want everything in life to be a direct path. But often God takes us on a different journey. Yes, there are challenges to overcome. Are we going to see only the challenges or trust in God’s promises? Pointing out only the problems and roadblocks can derail us. But, moving forward with the knowledge of God’s presence and faith in God’s love and guidance can lead to success and glorious celebration.

My first decision each year is a budget. I review it each month or each payday or when planning a big purchase. I include savings and special set-asides to make sure I meet my financial commitments. What does your budget include? Where does United Women in Faith fit in your budget? My investment in the Legacy Endowment Fund is a big purchase that I incorporate into my budget. Planned gifts or a pledge for a major gift are big purchases. I can set aside a small amount each month to make a big gift at one time. Like any big purchase, a planned gift or a major gift adds to your life. It is a reminder to invest in the future. You decide what is important by where you put your gifts.
Giving a major gift or committing to a pledged major gift feels good because giving provides a sense of meaning and purpose. It shows faith and commitment to this organization 150 years from now. Friends of Legacy gifts are gifts of $5,000 or more to the Legacy Endowment Fund and can be paid all at once or paid over a 3-to-5-year commitment. A pledge to the Legacy Endowment Fund is a gift to the future women of United Women in Faith.
Your gift to the Legacy Endowment Fund is joined together with the generous gifts of others for the future work of United Women in Faith. Your mission giving combines to do the current work of United Women in Faith. When you make your pledge to mission or you give at your monthly meeting or you add an additional fundraiser for your unit’s pledge, you make a gift that reaches women, youth, and children today. You make the work of today possible with each dollar given in mission.

My first decision each year is a budget. I review it each month or each payday or when planning a big purchase. I include savings and special set-asides to make sure I meet my financial commitments. What does your budget include? Where does United Women in Faith fit in your budget? My investment in the Legacy Endowment Fund is a big purchase that I incorporate into my budget. Planned gifts or a pledge for a major gift are big purchases. I can set aside a small amount each month to make a big gift at one time. Like any big purchase, a planned gift or a major gift adds to your life. It is a reminder to invest in the future. You decide what is important by where you put your gifts.
Giving a major gift or committing to a pledged major gift feels good because giving provides a sense of meaning and purpose. It shows faith and commitment to this organization 150 years from now. Friends of Legacy gifts are gifts of $5,000 or more to the Legacy Endowment Fund and can be paid all at once or paid over a 3-to-5-year commitment. A pledge to the Legacy Endowment Fund is a gift to the future women of United Women in Faith.
Your gift to the Legacy Endowment Fund is joined together with the generous gifts of others for the future work of United Women in Faith. Your mission giving combines to do the current work of United Women in Faith. When you make your pledge to mission or you give at your monthly meeting or you add an additional fundraiser for your unit’s pledge, you make a gift that reaches women, youth, and children today. You make the work of today possible with each dollar given in mission.

Research and years of planning brought us to the rebranding of the organization we experienced first with a new name and logo in March 2022, and continues.

As a 154-year-old organization of faithful women organized for mission on behalf of women, children, and youth, we are moving forward refreshing our programs, resources, message, and story, but not our mission focus. Over the century and with every generation of United Women in Faith there have been changes, adapting to address the needs and God’s calling for them in their day and looking ahead with grace to the future, to us in this present moment!

In a little while, a delivery truck will arrive and employees will unload boxes of food and supplies as the rain turns to snow. Meanwhile, rent prices are on the rise, high-end high-rise apartment buildings are under construction less than a block away, and as temperatures plummet toward winter, at least 70 families aren’t certain where they will sleep. Nearby shelters are at capacity.
Still, this grassroots organization does everything it can to help all people meet basic survival needs and to address essential issues affecting quality of life. And those gathered on the steps of this old building feel welcome.

In fact, if you think about it, Christmas would be a great time to regularly innovate within our traditions: learn new songs and hymns that help us experience familiar truths in new ways; include new foods along with traditional foods, especially those catering to the different needs and preferences of younger generations; continue to rethink our celebrations as COVID remains a factor in gathering safely. In an era in which in-person worship attendance has been slow to recover, it seems fairly likely that we will need to work harder to connect to folks who are in search of spiritual nurture but for whom the traditional patterns are not compelling.

Of course, the reality is that families create and adapt and change their traditions very regularly. As people marry, children are born, families move and we all age, the traditions change. Sometimes we do it consciously, thoughtfully, and sometimes we do it in reaction to some sort of pressure.

Advent, Christmas and New Year’s Eve can be tender and warm times, but they can also be hard times if we are isolated or missing loved ones. This year, in response to all that is going on in The United Methodist Church, congregations that have held votes regarding disaffiliation are experiencing new kinds of relationship rupture. Some members in congregations are dealing with pain and surprise as they experience people with whom they have worshiped and fellowshipped voting differently than expected. This will be a different Christmas season for some churches.

Traditions are part of our celebrations and observances as United Women in Faith too. Some will change due to circumstances out of our control. But wouldn’t this be a great season to intentionally create some new traditions, to stand alongside and enrich those we love? Wouldn’t this be a great season to embrace change as an act of hope and faith? What about creating new observances of Advent or for the New Year? What about reaching out to those who are suddenly isolated and forming a new tradition together? This is a bit different than saying: come join us, we have a good thing going. Imagine working with a group of people who don’t regularly gather to create something new.

After all, the point of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection was to make all things new, to break down barriers between God and humanity, between people in the community, and to offer relationship, bread, healing, forgiveness and wholeness. Of course, the truth is, things never really stay the same for long. For those of us who have accumulated some years, it only takes a few minutes to come up with examples—we used to search a card catalog, get graded on penmanship, use paper maps and phone books, watch our favorite television shows only once a week, need a man’s permission to obtain a credit card.

At the same time there are things that endure, such as the need to connect, research, make records, communicate, enjoy art, worship. The ways in which we accomplish these tasks may change, but the needs remain.

We have experienced this throughout the existence of United Methodist Women and our predecessors. How we do mission has changed. Our names have changed. How we learn about the work needed and the work being done has changed. How we gather, inform, fundraise, engage, celebrate and worship has changed. So much has changed!

But we can also look back at our 153 years and see so much has remained constant. Women still gather for Christian fellowship, prayer, support and study. Women are still committed to raising up women leaders. Women are still committed to making the world a better place. Women are still committed to living out their faith in lives of action for justice and through loving service. Women are still attentive to those who are excluded or left out or left behind. Women know the church needs us.

One of the marvelous learnings from all the research we did as a foundation for launching our new brand is that both members and nonmembers value these constants. Women who are not members of United Methodist Women, now United Women in Faith, value and long for the things that have been at the core of who we are throughout our existence. Members and nonmembers want to grow closer to God, find sisters in faith, raise up and hold up women leaders and invest in causes larger than themselves. This, friends, is good news. The core purposes for which we exist have urgency and appeal to many who are not yet members.

What is less appealing to women of faith is connected to how we have organized to achieve our goals. We know from decades of hard work with new member resources and thinking about what it means to belong that it can be very challenging to enfold new people in existing structures in ways that allow them to bring all they have to offer. The good news is that we can lead with our core values and goals. We can invite women to connect in new ways, to engage with causes larger than themselves and to come together for Christian nurture in familiar and new ways.

This time of rebranding is a wonderful opportunity to elevate our deepest values, to employ new tools and to reaffirm the centrality of faith, action and sisterhood. Of course, the truth is, things never really stay the same for long. For those of us who have accumulated some years, it only takes a few minutes to come up with examples—we used to search a card catalog, get graded on penmanship, use paper maps and phone books, watch our favorite television shows only once a week, need a man’s permission to obtain a credit card.

At the same time there are things that endure, such as the need to connect, research, make records, communicate, enjoy art, worship. The ways in which we accomplish these tasks may change, but the needs remain.

We have experienced this throughout the existence of United Methodist Women and our predecessors. How we do mission has changed. Our names have changed. How we learn about the work needed and the work being done has changed. How we gather, inform, fundraise, engage, celebrate and worship has changed. So much has changed!

But we can also look back at our 153 years and see so much has remained constant. Women still gather for Christian fellowship, prayer, support and study. Women are still committed to raising up women leaders. Women are still committed to making the world a better place. Women are still committed to living out their faith in lives of action for justice and through loving service. Women are still attentive to those who are excluded or left out or left behind. Women know the church needs us.

One of the marvelous learnings from all the research we did as a foundation for launching our new brand is that both members and nonmembers value these constants. Women who are not members of United Methodist Women, now United Women in Faith, value and long for the things that have been at the core of who we are throughout our existence. Members and nonmembers want to grow closer to God, find sisters in faith, raise up and hold up women leaders and invest in causes larger than themselves. This, friends, is good news. The core purposes for which we exist have urgency and appeal to many who are not yet members.

What is less appealing to women of faith is connected to how we have organized to achieve our goals. We know from decades of hard work with new member resources and thinking about what it means to belong that it can be very challenging to enfold new people in existing structures in ways that allow them to bring all they have to offer. The good news is that we can lead with our core values and goals. We can invite women to connect in new ways, to engage with causes larger than themselves and to come together for Christian nurture in familiar and new ways.

This time of rebranding is a wonderful opportunity to elevate our deepest values, to employ new tools and to reaffirm the centrality of faith, action and sisterhood. We are also looking at our own landscape and the great opportunity we have to welcome new members. Over the past year, the center struggled to keep essential activities open for families, children and people in need. The center’s leaders, particularly Soroka, the executive director, were guided as always by the center’s original mission: to support folks with mental health issues, children in need of care and new immigrants settling in to a new neighborhood and culture.

For years, Utica, a hardscrabble town on the Erie Canal, once a stop on the manufacturing corridor, has seen a decline in population. Until recently, the overall population was decreasing by about one percent a year. Located between Syracuse and Albany, Utica residents are hoping for a renaissance through the public-private “Nano Utica” initiative, making the region a hub for nanotechnology. The pandemic slowed this progress.

Growth has occurred incrementally with the arrival of new citizens. The region has been a destination for new Americans originally born in Russia, Bosnia, Burma and Somalia. Around 19 percent of the approximately 60,000 Utica residents were born in a different country.

Thanks to the resettlement of refugees, the area has become increasingly multicultural. In one recent swearing-in ceremony, 30 refugees from 15 countries became U.S. citizens in Utica. Economically, the median income has risen slightly to $35,394, and the poverty rate remains a stubborn 30 percent. The neighbors who are struggling with poverty, young children and mental health are the families that the Neighborhood Center, a United Methodist Women-supported national mission institution, has always served.

The Mountain Sky Conference has hosted a Mission u in 2021, over four Sunday afternoons in February. More than 273 people of many ages registered across 16 states according to Cathy 
Speich-Ferguson, dean of the Mountain Sky Mission u.

“We sent out invitations to all of the churches in our conference and to our United Methodist Women presidents and advertised on a national church site listing events. We shared the free event on our conference website calendar and our conference United Methodist Women website calendar,” Speich-Ferguson said. “Our conference normally would have 40 to 70 folks attend a Mission u — mostly retired and older folks — when we met in person. This virtual event has fantastic participation and is easier for folks who can’t travel, can’t get out of the house, have kids, or other barriers to participation.”

While we yearn for the chance to be together in person again, we can follow the example of creative and committed United Methodist Women members to continue offering the chance to transform in our learning, to continue the century-long mission to open eyes and hearts, for, as Irene Barnes stated at the 1900 missionary conference, “Prejudice has to be overcome.”

The Mountain Sky Conference has hosted a Mission u in 2021, over four Sunday afternoons in February. More than 273 people of many ages registered across 16 states according to Cathy 
Speich-Ferguson, dean of the Mountain Sky Mission u.

“We sent out invitations to all of the churches in our conference and to our United Methodist Women presidents and advertised on a national church site listing events. We shared the free event on our conference website calendar and our conference United Methodist Women website calendar,” Speich-Ferguson said. “Our conference normally would have 40 to 70 folks attend a Mission u — mostly retired and older folks — when we met in person. This virtual event has fantastic participation and is easier for folks who can’t travel, can’t get out of the house, have kids, or other barriers to participation.”

While we yearn for the chance to be together in person again, we can follow the example of creative and committed United Methodist Women members to continue offering the chance to transform in our learning, to continue the century-long mission to open eyes and hearts, for, as Irene Barnes stated at the 1900 missionary conference, “Prejudice has to be overcome.”

“People want to eat healthy,” Hansen said. “They come to us when they could go to a more traditional pantry that’s giving out canned goods and nonperishables, and that’s all fine, but we find that people choose to come to our fresh market.”

It’s also important for us to know that these were real women—not paragons. This makes it all the more important for us to stand against voter suppression today and to be willing to examine who is excluded and who might be harmed if we are not alert.

Alano agrees.

One of the mission’s most crucial programs is Work Camp. The program draws about 2,400 volunteers from churches, schools or service organizations for short- or long-term mission trips for projects such as housing repairs and building accessibility ramps for elderly and low-income families.

Because the people stay in cabins, paying the mission room and board, the camp had to be delayed about a month so that a health and safety plan could be put in place. Many volunteers whose trips were canceled sent a donation instead, which was directed to hire local people to tackle the jobs they would have done on the mission.

Collins anticipates a “new normal” regarding health guidelines going forward. She also worries about a drop in charitable giving, which Red Bird Mission depends on to survive.

“It’s easy to get discouraged,” Collins said. “But all the acts of kindness we’ve witnessed these past few months restore my faith in humanity. At the heart of it, people really do care for one another and take care of one another, especially in the worst of times.”

That’s what Todd Lafrenz, Green Team chair at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church in Springfield, Illinois, shared about the church’s journey to installing a solar array. It took many meetings, many members and many months, but the solar array was approved by the church. In fact, it was being hammered and drilled into place while United Methodist Women’s Just Energy for All training took place there in December 2019.

Caring about our energy use is part of our faith walk as Christians, because the system by which we get our energy is inherently unjust: it harms the poor, people of color, and women and children and benefits corporations that pollute our land, air and water for profit.

Over 70 United Methodist Women attendees and partners from all over the United States examined our personal energy use, learned where our energy comes from and lamented our complicity in an unjust system during the training. Through the training, we learned that transitioning our energy economy to one that prioritizes clean and renewable sources like wind and solar that is justice-centered will be a giant undertaking. But it’s not impossible. This transition will happen through steady but bold steps in each of our communities, and those steps can start with each of us.

That’s what Todd Lafrenz, Green Team chair at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church in Springfield, Illinois, shared about the church’s journey to installing a solar array. “Our relationship with United Methodist Women is very open,” said Esparza. “United Methodist Women members are very loving. They are generous, and they are always there for us. They do their best to respond when we inform them of a special need.”

The centers serve 250 children during the school year and 450 over the summer.

“Literacy is a major project for us during the school year as well as during the summer,” Esparza explained. During the summer of 2019, we offered sessions in four schools as well as our three campuses.”

The emphasis on the most vulnerable children perfectly fits United Community Centers’ mission. It helps create a brighter future for those for whom it could be most dark.

In February 2020 United Methodist Women invited organization leaders and women General and Jurisdictional Conference delegates to St. Louis for its annual Leadership Development Days. The time together focused on raising awareness of oppression and privilege as women leaders within the church and working together to dismantle both, beginning with General Conference, then scheduled to meet in May 2020.

The United Methodist General Conference, the top policymaking body for the denomination, rescheduled because of the COVID-19 global health crisis, will take place sometime in 2021. There, 862 delegates from around the world will set denominational policy, revise church law, approve budgets for churchwide programs and adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. This will be followed by Jurisdictional Conferences, where the five jurisdictions in the United States traditionally assign and elect bishops and boards of directors of agencies of the church.

“We are committed to developing women leaders in The United Methodist Church,” said Mollie James-Vickery, director of mobilization and advocacy for United Methodist Women. “Our members are leaders across the church and their communities. We have worked hard this year to encourage women to run for leadership, to make their voices heard and to carry the purpose of United Methodist Women with them.”

They were ready to Say Her Name.
Women across the conference stepped up to leadership, making connections and organizing a response. Cynthia Rives, national board member, and Darlene Alfred, part of the national program advisory group, published a joint Op-Ed. Jackie Carter, social action coordinator for the East District of the Central Texas Conference United Methodist Women, communicated with the family throughout their grief process to ensure that United Methodist Women presented a resolution for Jefferson’s funeral. and she swiftly organized a candlelight vigil for a wounded community.
Organizing a vigil on less than a week’s notice was new for Carter, but she felt clear that this was what God was calling to her to do, part of the kin-dom building work that she was given.
“I have always known that I have a call for service on my life,” Carter said, reflecting back on the experience. “God has gifted me to be a servant to God’s people.”
It was not without challenges. Jefferson’s death was heartbreaking for Carter. As tensions rose, she leaned heavily on God. She worked early in the morning and late at night, even taking a day off work to make the phone calls, texts and e-mails needed to call together a coalition of community groups for a quick turnaround.

“Deaconesses are a neglected tradition in the Indian church. In many ways the church was founded by deaconesses, yet its leaders say they can’t find the money to pay their salaries today. That’s due in part to their work— they’re the ones who work with children— not being seen as important,” Cantor said. “I can’t help but wonder what Isabella Thoburn would think of that. She saw nothing as more important than values formation among children and youth.” As the ecclesial landscape and the country’s politics shift around them, some deaconesses have started working in different settings.

Malathi Jamesraj coordinates a program that teaches sewing and tailoring to poor women in Chennai.

“Many men are drunkards and don’t give money to their families. It’s hard for the woman to run the family with no source of income. So if a woman can make dresses for her neighbors, she can support her family and make decisions about her own life. And she gets new respect. If the men need money, they have to come to the women to ask for it,” she said.

Uma Natarajan is the Methodist pastor in a poor neighborhood of Chennai where Jamesraj has coordinated tailoring classes that meet in her church. She appreciates Jamesraj’s work.
“I wish more could come out of their own places and serve like Malathi does in our community,” she said.

“That’s the church meeting the people where they are.”

One way in which United Methodist Women fulfills its Purpose is by bringing petitions to the General Conference that prioritize women, children and youth.

In 2020 United Methodist Women will be bringing four new pieces of legislation to be included in the church’s Book of Resolutions, on observing Children’s Sabbath, protecting the girl child, protecting voting rights, and the status of women and realizing full human rights. The current titles of the legislation are “Children’s Sabbath,” “The Girl Child,” “The Status of Women,” and “Voting Rights Protections in the United States.” You can read the complete text at www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/gc2020.

All delegates and legislation at General Conference are first assigned to committees before coming before the full conference. At the 2020 General Conference, 862 delegates will be assigned to 14 committees, with likely more than 1,000 petitions divided among the committees. Over the next several hours, Jugadora repeatedly called her mother’s cell phone with no result. She went to several police stations, but everyone she talked with claimed they knew nothing. Finally, she got word that her mother’s body had been spotted under a nearby bridge and her father’s body had been dumped in the cemetery. Before she could get there herself, the bodies had been transported to a local funeral home. Jugadora and her siblings spent several days coming up with the money to retrieve the bodies so they could properly mourn and bury their parents.

Jugadora today keeps a photo of her parents—Rogelio Buena and Jenny Royo—on a small altar in their simple home. Her 6-year-old daughter, Clarisa, will go to the altar when she misses her grandparents and place her fingertips on their photo. When she comes home from school, Clarisa will talk to the photo, telling her grandparents about her day, asking them about theirs. Jugadora says Clarisa worries about whether they have enough food in heaven.

“I assure her that God is taking good care of them. She asks me when they’re coming back. I tell her they aren’t, but that we will one day go to be with them. If I didn’t believe that, I would go crazy,” she said.

As the sole breadwinner for herself and her two children, Tharskika found a job at a cooperative restaurant, but what she earns isn’t enough to pay the school fees for both her children. So she sent her daughter off to a boarding school run by a Sri Lankan charity; education there is free for war orphans. Her son remains with her.

“We’re not living well, but we’re surviving,” she said. It’s a common refrain from war widows in Sri Lanka’s conflict-torn north. “If I had more income I could ensure that my kids get a good education and then a good job. That’s all I care about.”

As the sole breadwinner for herself and her two children, Tharskika found a job at a cooperative restaurant, but what she earns isn’t enough to pay the school fees for both her children. So she sent her daughter off to a boarding school run by a Sri Lankan charity; education there is free for war orphans. Her son remains with her.

“We’re not living well, but we’re surviving,” she said. It’s a common refrain from war widows in Sri Lanka’s conflict-torn north. “If I had more income I could ensure that my kids get a good education and then a good job. That’s all I care about.”

One can only imagine what that small group of strong, determined women who met on March 23, 1869, at Tremont Methodist Episcopal Church in Boston would say now about what they started. I imagine they would be very pleased to see that the school, Isabella Thoburn College, and hospital, Clara Swain Hospital, founded by their first missionaries in India are still in operation today.

I hope they’d smile to see God’s hands at work through United Methodist Women over the past 150 years. Their legacy lives on in the national mission institutions and colleges that Mission Giving supports today, in the impactful justice, mission and ministry work we continue to do to fulfill our Purpose, in the thousands of women in attendance at our last Assembly, all with the same shared passion for mission that they put into action so long ago.
