Before anything else, I must thank the Thinking Watermill Society for inviting the Parioli English School to the podcast. We are 3 students who deeply believe in this project for the protection of the marine environment.
Unless you’ve been making a superhuman effort to avoid the news recently, you’ll know that the ocean is vital to life on Earth. But why, exactly, is this the case?
First of all, it has the important role of helping us “breathe”.
The Phytoplankton, tiny plant-like organisms that live in the sea, are responsible for at least 50% of the oxygen on the Earth.
Just like land-based plants, they contain chlorophyll to capture sunlight and use photosynthesis to convert it into the energy they need, producing oxygen as a byproduct. They also consume carbon dioxide, transferring about 10 gigatonnes of carbon from the atmosphere deep into the ocean.
In addition, the entire ocean works as a real climate regulator:
In fact, it absorbs huge amounts of heat from the sun. “More than 90% of the warming that has happened on Earth over the past 50 years has occurred in the ocean” according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “More than 90% of the warming that has happened on Earth over the past 50 years has occurred in the ocean”
That heat tends to be at its most intense nearer the equator, with the water nearest the surface warming the most. Sea currents then transport that heat around the world; north and south, towards the poles. As some of the seawater evaporates, it becomes denser and heavier due to its relatively higher salt content. That causes it to sink, taking some of the warm water deeper.
Some currents are directly responsible for specific climatic effects. One example is the Gulf Stream, which takes warmer water from the Gulf of Mexico across the Atlantic to Europe. If the Gulf Stream were disrupted, much of the western part of Europe – including the UK, Ireland and France – could become colder.
Now I would like to introduce Alejandro who will provide further information regarding this topic.

Hello, I am Alejandro.
Another reason to take into account is that fish is on the menu for billions of people around the world every day and it accounts for almost 16% of all animal protein consumed globally. Of course, there’s more to seafood than fish, crustacea and other edible creatures. A range of algae and sea plants are also commonly used in cooking.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization lists sodium, calcium, magnesium, and iodine among some of the important nutrients in seaweed. Iodine deficiency has been identified as the “most prevalent and easily preventable” cause of impaired cognitive development in children.
Pressure on resources and the environment have led to calls for food production and for people’s diets to change. A cow, for example, produces 2.8kg of greenhouse gas per kilo of live body weight and needs 10kg of feed for every kilo it weighs.
Plus, to get just one gram of protein from cattle, you need 112 litres of water. The oceans, if properly managed and maintained, could form an important part of a more sustainable approach to feeding the planet’s growing human population.
Needless to say, the ocean is not just a source of food. It is also home to an abundance of life. While estimates on the number of species that live in the sea exist, no one knows with absolute certainty what that number is.
According to the US National Library of Medicine’s National Institutes of Health, “91% of species in the ocean still await description.” That’s due in no small part to the vastness of the oceans, which cover around 70% of the planet’s surface and are up to 11,000 metres deep. The number of yet-to-be-discovered creatures living in the sea could easily run into the millions.
Now Enrico is going to put forward another consideration in favour of oceans.

3. THE OCEAN ECONOMY
Hi, i’m Enrico.
Another reason why we all should care for the oceans is that they provide people with millions of job opportunities. Indeed, by 2030, ocean-based industries will employ more than 40 million people worldwide, an OECD report estimates. The biggest share of those jobs is likely to be in the fisheries sector, followed by tourism. As OECD has analyzed, by the next 20 years the economic sectors that will grow the most will be: offshore wind [24.52%] followed by industrial fish processing [6.26%], industrial marine aquaculture [5.69%] and industrial capture fisheries [4.10%].
In addition, the economic health of maritime industries is fundamentally linked to the overall health of the oceans, of course. The ocean economy is of particular importance in developing countries, which are home to most of 3 billion people who rely on the sea for their livelihoods.
However, challenges like climate change, pollution and a simple lack of awareness of sustainable ocean stewardship techniques continue to put maritime resources at risk. That will limit the potential socioeconomic benefits those resources represent for future generations, as well as stifling people’s earning abilities in the present.
The ocean is therefore fundamental for human existence because it regulates rainfall and droughts, holds 97% of our planet’s water, and absorbs CO2, helping keep the carbon cycle in balance. From food to jobs, it’s a lifeline for billions of people, too.
But the ocean is also a beautiful natural environment with an invaluable recreational role to play. And with research showing a connection between spending time in the natural world and lowering your stress levels, that might be something else worth holding on to.
For all these reasons, we have to start acting now. Not only should we try to do our best to safeguard the oceans and their creatures for the future generations, but we should preserve all their resources as well. Every single small act of awareness, such as reducing any waste discarded in oceans or intensive fishing can make the big difference.

Hello everyone. My name is Elena. Today we are celebrating World Bee Day so I would like to share with you the importance of raising awareness of bees protection as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals programme which also gives relevance to these pollinators.
But before anything else, I must thank the Thinking Watermill Society for inviting the Parioli English School to the podcast. We are 4 students who deeply believe in “Bee Engaged” so that we can all contribute to safeguarding the most popular pollinators of our Planet.
Why should we care about pollinators?
There are different pollinators species in the world such as butterflies, birds and bats! No doubt, the bees are the most well-known ones ranging between 25.000 and 30.000 species.
Nearly 90 per cent of all wild flowering plants depend at least to some extend on animal pollination. These little animals allow many plants, including food crops, to reproduce. Indeed, the food that we eat such as fruits and vegetables, directly relies on pollinators.

A world without them would equal a world without bio and food diversity. The vast majority of flowering plant species only produce seeds if animal pollinators move pollen from the anthers to the stigmas of their flowers. Without this service, many interconnected species and processes functioning within the ecosystem would collapse. Therefore, pollination is a keystone process in the wild flowering.

Now I would like to introduce Isabella who will provide further information in this regard.

Hello, I am Isabella.
As a matter of fact, we all depend on nature.
For this reason, it would be really impactful for the world population to preserve not only the bees, but all pollinators.
Not only do pollinators contribute directly to the reproduction of plants in nature (as Elena told us), but they also help increase the amount of land exploitable for agriculture, affecting 35 percent of global land. These little insects strongly favour to fertilize our cultivated soil with their tiny legs.
Needless to say, during the last years their natural habitat has drastically changed and has severely been damaged.
In fact, what is causing bees extinction is the decreasing of blooming soil due to chemical products used for fertilising land, as well as treating the soil with new machines and techniques, which allows farmers reuse the land right after the harvest, but in the long run, leads to impoverishment of its nutriments. In addition, heavy machines easily destroy insects homes built on the ground between the grass blades, leading to the destruction of many pollinators’ natural environment and no place for these little animals to settle. Life on Land, which represents the 15th United Nations Sustainable Development Goal addresses this global challenge.

Another important point, when it comes to the protection of pollinators, is clearly the role they play against world hunger.
The second sustainable development goal of the United Nations is called ‘Zero hunger’ and refers to the necessity to reduce the famine concern the world is currently facing: there are at least 50 countries in the world with almost 200 million people affected by this plague and sadly, these figures are likely to increase if no immediate action is taken.
Although pollinators cannot help to entirely solve this urgent and enormous catastrophe, their survival can impact positively as 80% of human food is supplied by plants which depend on pollinators.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, the decline of bees populations, caused by pollution and climate change, is an alarming fact that could compromise the global food security and nutrition.
Without bees, several varieties of plants are endangered and, consequently, livelihoods and humans are no longer safeguarded.
Again, if this tragic trend continues, a large variety of crops such as fruits, nuts and a relevant portion of common vegetables will be replaced by staple crops, resulting in an unbalanced diet.
We can actually say that pollinators are crucial protagonists in the food chain, contributing to a well-balanced diet and, simultaneously, helping plants, animals and also humans be provided with fundamental substances for their lives.

Now Daniele is going to put forward another consideration in favour of pollinators.

Hi, I'm Daniele.
Another reason to take into account is that pollinators with different traits and responses to ambient conditions are one of the best ways to minimize risks due to climate change. Their diversity ensures that there are effective pollinators not just for current conditions, but for future conditions, as well. As a result, ensuring biodiversity among these species is crucial to build resilience in agroecosystems and adapt to climate change.
All in all, what can we personally do to help? We can start with growing bee friendly plants not only in rural areas but also in the urban ones on balconies, terraces, parks and in other green parts of our cities and towns. We can also take action by choosing local organic produce when possible and helping raise awareness about the importance of pollinators for our ecosystems. Protecting any form of life and “Bee engaged” in supporting environmental initiatives is already a head start.
Future is now, so remember that we can all make the difference in safeguarding our planet. Therefore, take care of the environment as it were yourself.

This is how she introduced herself “I am number A 5384 of Auschwitz Birkenau”: even now she is gone. Now more than ever. An eternal, empathic, present. An unparalleled courage. Cruelty tattooed on her body and in her soul in that number.

However for all her life, back in Italy from the extermination camps, she reported her terrible experience, with simple words, straight and compassionate.

To describe her, we quote another known example: “Arendt doesn’t want that what seems ineffable remains unspoken: she doesn’t want us to remain silent because such a deep horror cannot be understood, and its memory cannot be forgotten” Adriana Cavarero “Arendt and the dullness of evil”.

She was born on the 21st December, 1914, died on the 6th February, 2005, deported to Birkenau and survived the Extermination.

Mrs. Liana Millu chose to trust only mankind, refusing the help of Faith in a divine presence. A unique bravery allowing her to face all human difficulties and humanly.

We invite our readers to listen to Mrs. Liana Millu’s voice in the indelible testimonies that can be found on the Internet, such as her interview with Enzo Biagi for “Il Fatto”, in which she drives us to the hell of the Lagers, being at same time Dante, Virgilio and Beatrice. La scienza esatta persuasa allo sterminio.

Oggi, Giornata della Memoria 2022, ricordiamo quanto l’ essere umano possa essere crudele. Ed allo stesso tempo ricordiamo quanto l’essere umano possa essere compassionevole.

Da una parte ci affacciamo nella Notte della crudeltà, per poi aggrapparci alla luce della compassione di alcuni individui che non possiamo e non dobbiamo dimenticare. Tra essi, spicca la Signora Liana Millu.

Si definiva “Sono Il numero A 5384 di Auschwitz Birkenau”: anche ora che non c’è più. Ora più che mai. Un eterno presente empatico. Un coraggio ineguagliabile. La crudeltà tatuata nel corpo e nell’anima in quel numero.

Tuttavia per tutta la vita , tornata in Italia dai campi di sterminio, raccontò la sua esperienza terribile con parole semplici ,dirette e compassionevoli.

Citiamo per descrivervela un altro esempio noto: “Arendt non vuole che ciò che sembra ineffabile rimanga indicibile: non vuole che si resti in silenzio perché non si può comprendere un orrore così profondo, né che se ne perda la memoria” Adriana Cavarero “Arendt e la banalità del male”

Nata il 21 dicembre 1914 , morta il 6 febbraio 2005, deportata a Birkenau e sopravvissuta allo Sterminio.

La Signora Liana Millu ha scelto di confidare solo nel genere umano, rifiutando l’aiuto della Fede in una presenza divina. Un coraggio unico che le ha permesso di affrontare tutte le difficoltà umane e umanamente.

Invitiamo chi legge ad ascoltare la voce della Signora Liana Millu nelle testimonianze indelebili che si possono trovare in rete, ad esempio la sua intervista con Enzo Biagi per “Il Fatto”, in cui ci accompagna nell’inferno dei Lager, essendo essa stessa Dante, Virgilio e Beatrice. Una stella cometa che ci permette di affacciarci nell’abisso, ci tiene per mano e ci illumina il cammino che essa stessa percorse.

Ci invita a conoscere e riconoscere i segni che portarono e potrebbero portare ad altri Olocausti.

La crudeltà si nutre della logica del presente.

L’assenza di Empatia conta i numeri, sa fare solo quello, come quelli tatuati che marchiavano gli ebrei nei campi di sterminio.

Un egosintonia perversa in cui gli uomini diventano “pezzi” da sopprimere.

Ora è tempo di mettere da parte la logica e dare spazio alla compassione. Almeno oggi.

For this reason, we thought about creating a wood of trees through “ZeroCO2”, a B corporation specialized in reforestation projects and, thanks to our supporters, we had 100 trees already planted in Guatemala; besides contrasting climate change, this will give work to some families of farmers.
More trees will follow. We call it wood because the trees are still a few, but we hope they will become a forest.
We would like to soon reach more than 250 trees which cover almost one hectare, and then reach 10,000 trees which would cover approximately 40 hectares, which are 100 acres (“Hundred-acre wood”) because we think that to save the world we should remain children in some way and get inspired by fairy tales.
The trees will be planted not only in Guatemala but also in Italy and other parts of the world.
From here the name The Thinking Watermill Woods.

Before anything else, I encourage everyone to embrace the chance to make some changes in their lifestyle. The more we are acting, the faster and the better.

This short encounter had me thinking that I only learnt the importance of environmental conservation as an adult. It has been a really difficult journey. I had to change my mindset in order to change my way of living and save our environment in any small way. On the other hand, it is not too late to instill this knowledge in our youth alongside their formal school education.

It’s time we teach the youth the importance of conserving electricity, choosing cleaner commute alternatives and avoiding use of plastics. In addition to this, we should encourage them to mesh their passions with the aim to make the world a better place. When I say this, I’m talking about “green jobs” such as agricultural science, farming, sustainable and ethical fashion and also urban planning and architecture just to name a few.

When we focus on instilling a green mindset in the youth, it triggers their curiosity and forms a foundation for their future and the future of our environment.

With that, I leave you with a quote by Richard Louv, an American author, who once said, “The children and nature movement is fueled by this fundamental idea that the child in nature is an endangered species, and the health of the child and the health of the Earth are inseparable.”

And for you, dear listeners, it is never too late to make a change. One small act a day cultivates a habit of green living. I will share with you some of the steps that I take towards green living today. First, I drink water from a reusable bottle rather than from plastic bottles. This action replaces all the plastics that I would have used and thereby reducing both my carbon footprint and the plastic burden on landfills, and water sources in Kenya. I have also reduced the amount of red meat consumption which helps to positively impact the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. Lastly, I make sure to donate my old clothing to charity every year which decreases the pollution in our landfills. In the future, I hope to grow my own garden flowers and vegetables to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals polluting our waterways.

It’s time to take a step back, educate the youth and make a change to your lifestyle while you’re at it.

The city that never stops and never sleeps…did stop for the first time ever in its history. And it went into a long forced sleep not knowing even the basics of what lying on a bed actually meant. You will recall me saying you don’t really visit New York City but that it is New York City that takes you for a ride without asking permission. Well, this time you could not even hear New York City.

I took the most harrowing pictures I never thought I could have taken. Not even in a movie set I could have imagined a deserted Broadway, empty subway trains, a ghost Wall Street and a silent Times Square. Silence?! That was not even in the vocabulary of newyorkers. These places never stopped. Not during wars. Not even on 9-11. It has been shocking really. It felt as if New York City could not cope with it. Lots of newyorkers left the city. Some of them for good and suddenly. They left with the same hurry like the pioneers during the far west conquest would leave a camp site when they smelled danger.

But things are getting better. Restrictions are easing and New York City is reopening. I’d love to think that this was not an induced motionless sleep but rather an hibernation. When animals hibernate they grow stronger and prepare themselves for the next chapter. New York City is an animal and is back with a vengeance. So, when you can, safely, come back to visit New York City. You will see the statue of Liberty standing there and you will hear her say “Come on you, welcome back. Let me take you for a ride!”

But being locked indoors has made us look around our homes and say: do I really need that coffee table or will I ever read that book again? A good number of us have even decided to change the look of our homes and have been busy redecorating and refurbishing.
And with COVID restrictions easing and the good weather coming, a British cultural institution has made its appearance again: the car boot sale.
Car boot sales are informal gatherings, usually in farm fields, where Brits show up, open the boots of their cars and sell whatever stuff they have been storing in their homes for years. They usually occur on Sundays in the spring and in the summer, sprawling around the country side and town markets all across the UK. Each of them attracts hundreds of improvised sellers and thousands of buyers. And because most of the sellers are more driven by getting rid of their stuff rather than maximizing profits…car boot sales are definitely a buyer’s dream! And that’s why armies of eager buyers flock to car boot sales, but that makes prices go up, right? So without realizing it, in a way, car boot sales are as close to efficient markets as you can get. All spontaneous and unregulated! Adam Smith’s true invisible hand at work!
I have been at many car boot sales as a seller. They are really quintessential British and a lot of fun…and they are the epithomy of the old saying that a man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure!

This is an introduction to a new podcast series in collaboration with The Thinking Watermill Society on being an African and European descendant in the music industry, which is commonly referred to using the term "Afro-pean."

The NoOx Worldwide team, artists and producers will join me in this podcast series to give you a deeper look into the Afro-pean cultural themes, identity, recognition and experiences through their music.

Apart from the beauty of the sound and of the words that only the connoisseurs of the language can appreciate in full, the sonnet custodies significant messages regarding the relations of Me with Others, to create Us. Stemming from the amor cortese – gentle love - it teaches to enjoy the company of others along with intellectual discussion, in a way that doesn’t appreciate the others for their earnings (or, worse, for their revenues).

Reading the sonnet, it immediately appears that:

Me comes after You, and is a part of Us: Guido i’vorrei che tu, Lapo ed io – Guido, I would like that you, Lapo and me

The forma cortese – the gentle format - doesn’t emerge from sheer metrics; indeed soon after, the poet repeats the concept: iI vascello che li dovrebbe rapire si muove secondo il comune volere (“a volere vostro e mio”) – the vessel that should kidnap them, moves according to the common wishes (“wishes that are yours and mine”) .

And within the voyage, the happiness pursued in being together, is the happiness of the women, companions of adventure, and then the happiness of all of Us.

We believe there isn’t much more to add; it is enough to sit, read and learn.

The denial of the other, persecuted for no reason whatsoever, even if it is difficult to admit a reason for any atrocity.

A dismembered population to which dignity has been denied both as a collective and as a group of individuals.

Entering the camps, their identities were torn away, even before their lives, and transformed in a number.

After all these years, the fury of the Nazis and of those keen executioners and collaborators in many regions of the world - that blind fury - seems like smoke in which the single murderers appear indistinct, with no personality because they are all united in the black hole of atrocity.

For all this, we invite you today to remember the name of one of those murdered, one of the names read on the stumbling blocks, or on one of the many tombstones filling Europe with the names of the assassinated, look for them in history books, in novels, on Wikipedia.

Remember at least one of them this evening, tell your children, as an act of respect for who has passed away in the darkest hour, for the never born children.

To tell the world that they were and still are, and that who exterminated them wasn’t and still isn’t anybody.

To respect who has been, not to forget, and to say never again

Without a doubt, the relatively small population of Britain has contributed to the English language music the most.

So, let’s try this. Without thinking about it too much and without looking at google or Wikipedia: do a quick list in your head of all the most famous British music acts in rock and pop music that you can think of. Are you doing that? If you are, I bet that these names would certainly have come up in your head: Beatles, the Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Cream, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Genesis, the Who, Queen, The Clash, Sex Pistol, the Cure, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Simple Minds, the Smiths, Blur, Pulp, Oasis, Coldplay…and we could go on for a long time…

That’s a lot of acts spanning through many decades and they are just the ones that reached mega stardom.

Now, try to do the same with a much bigger country that has also contributed a lot to English music: the United States of America… are you doing that? Well in this case I bet these are the names that popped into your head: Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Jonny Cash, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Cher…and many others…

Now, have you noticed the stark difference? The British names I mentioned are all bands, while the American ones are all solo artists. Is that a coincidence? Of course I am not suggesting that no British solo artists ever reached stardom. Think of Elton John and David Bowie. And I am also not suggesting that there are no mega bands in the US: think of the Beach Boys, the Eagles, the Ramones, Nirvana and so on.

What I am suggesting is that even in music the British tend to show the strong sense of community and team work that defines their approach to many aspects of their life which is very different from the more individualistic mentality of their cousins across the pond. You don’t believe me? Ask your friends to make the same lists and you will see.

It is a sign of prevarication, because the woman is considered an object. It denies any kind of humanity and respect.

By sharing ideas and exalting the dignity of each person, we wish and work for this day to become in the nearest future just a commemoration of past dark days and not of a horrid present.

Why are British people so stubborn? Why do they always see themselves as different and separate from the rest? There is famous quote that goes: “When the sea in the Channel is rough, Europe is cut off”. That’s quite a quote isn’t it?

Well, I think the main reason is down to the most obvious characteristic of the British land. It is an island. Full stop. Britain has been politically connected and married to that land for centuries with almost no changes or interferences. While European countries have constantly and ferociously fought, drawn and redrawn their connected borders for centuries with bloody wars and treaties, Britain was spared.

Travelling from Britain to any other country has been made easier with planes but it is still an island. You still have to leave the British soil. You have to travel and get to another soil. Italians, French, Spaniards, Germans can just walk. One step and you are somewhere else.
Also, ask Italians what they think of their fellow countrymen who live in Sardinia or Sicily. Ask French how they see their fellow countrymen who live in Corsica or ask Spaniards to talk about the Spanish who live in the Balearic islands. Well, they will all tell you pretty much the same thing: well, they are islanders, right? They are different. Yes they are Italian, French, Spanish, and German…but they are different.

Well that applies to the British people too.

To do that, New York City has been reclaiming land from the sea for centuries.

Now, the more regular and stronger hurricanes and rising water levels are reminders that the sea is not just the subject of beautiful landscapes but it can also reclaim what it lost and bring destruction and mayhem.

As a countermeasure, structural works will begin towards the end of 2019 to fortify Lower Manhattan: New York City’s oldest and therefore most fragile section, as well as one of its richest. The shoreline of the East River will be extended up to 150 meters with elevated and reinforced land in order to protect the FDR highway, Battery tunnel and many subways tunnels. More flood protection will also be built at the Seaport area as well as at Battery Park City on the Hudson river.

The bottom line is that in the next 3 to 4 years, New York City will have changed once again and, we hope, for the better. So, don’t worry if you have not visited it yet. Like its inhabitants, New York City is very resilient and will still be there stronger and bolder posing for your pictures…only this time a little bit further away.

Great Britain exits EU, not Europe: but many interpret Brexit like this.

That European Union probably could have exalted common features of the adhering countries, more than try to smooth differences – those differences that enrich everybody in terms of economic and cultural progress; in any case, we mustn’t forget that it has assured the longest period of peace in history.

That’s why we continue to think about that long thread starting from the Greek and Greek-Roman civilization, passing through the melting pots of different cultures which the Middle Age and Renaissance have been, with philosophers, artists and geniuses moving from one court of Europe to another until the new unifying language was created, English, the Latin of the modern era; a thread that has never been interrupted; we are all children of a common culture going from the Greek philosophers to the enlightened minds that each European country can count and that echoed beyond those imaginary lines we call borders.

Realizing that we really all have a lot in common, the idea was born to create a new column “Keep the Brits”, with podcasts on trends of and opinions on London.

The aim is to keep the beat with the big cosmopolitan metropolis and keep the Brits with us, because we are all part of that marvellous continent, and marvellous dream, we call Europe.

Il Regno unito esce dall'UE e non dall'Europa ma molti lo interpretano così.

Quella UE che forse poteva più esaltare i tratti comuni dei paesi aderenti invece di cercare di smussare le differenze, le differenze che rendono tutti ricchi sotto il profilo del progresso economico e culturale, ci ha comunque assicurato la più lunga pace della storia.

Noi perciò continuiamo a pensare a quel lungo filo conduttore che va dalla civiltà greca prima, greco-romana poi a quel grande crogiolo di culture differenti che sono stati il medio evo prima e il rinascimento poi con filosofi, artisti e geni che passavano da una corte all'altra d'Europa sino a giungere alla nuova lingua unificante, il latino dell'era moderna, l'inglese; filo che non si è mai interrotto: siamo tutti figli di una comune cultura che va dai filosofi greci alle menti illuminate che ogni paese d'Europa può vantare e che hanno avuto eco oltre quelle linee immaginarie che chiamiamo confini.

I believe self-innovation to be a key feature when it comes to empowering an individual of his great responsibility towards our environment.

At the same time, I genuinely believe self-innovation, takes just a few small changes.

For example, a year ago I quit drinking water from plastic bottles, and now, when at home I only drink tap water, and when around I always bring with me a glass or metal bottle, so avoiding water and plastic waste.

Another change I implemented is quitting petrol cars, which I substituted with electric sharing vehicles like scooters, cars and bikes, that are not only great because they enable me to move everywhere including the city’s centre, but most importantly because by using them each one of us could drastically decrease fossil fuel’s air pollution.

The last change I recently adopted is considerably reducing my meat consumption.

A choice which if taken collectively could stimulate the market to reduce meat production. Thus, limiting animal intensive farming which nowadays is one of the most polluting factors.

So, this is how I personally deal with modern climate change on a daily basis. But it is too easy. In fact, I have always felt that we just do not do enough ourselves to change our habits. At the end of the day, corporations and politicians are there to feed and protect our habits and to give us what we want...and these days what we want is less and less the same as what we need. So in my little world these are the 3 small changes to my habits that I have tried to stick to:

ONE: when I go to shops that are within 2 miles from my home, I always walk. I do not use a car or public transportation and I carry what I buy. Now that’s not always feasible, I know, and I am not a body-builder or a fitness fanatic either. However what this does is obviously reducing my carbon footprint and help my health...but equally important I always end up buying less stuff...a bit less of what I want and a bit more of what I need.

TWO: I always take the stairs - at least up to 3rd or 4th floor. Well, in fairness, this does not apply to my home as I recently moved to the 34th floor...so I do want to save the planet but I do not want to kill myself in the process!

THREE: I do not take baths anymore..sorry, I mean, of course I still shower! The reality is that taking a bath is probably nicer but it consumes an inordinate amount of water compared to taking a shower.

So here they are. Three simple things...and I do not need any corporation, politician or scientist to do them for me.

Starting way back from the history of humanity to the moment when men began to live together, which is probably the birth of humanity in itself, the theme of empowerment has accompanied all those who could not decide for themselves in a more or less conscious way.
An undoubtedly essential theme for individuals and entire groups of people.
A theme that has repeated itself over the centuries without ever having been resolved. Even though we can reasonably believe that much has been done so that everyone can consider himself self-determined, still the goal is far away set.
For this reason, empowerment and in particular women empowerment, is one of the leitmotifs that our association works to pursue. Since half the sky is borne on the shoulders of women, these empowered women will try to solve the problems also of the other half. Stay tuned!

Nella storia dell'umanità e dal momento in cui gli uomini hanno iniziato a vivere insieme (che forse coincide con la nascita stessa dell'umanità) il tema dell'empowerment, in modo più o meno cosciente, ha accompagnato tutti coloro che non hanno potuto decidere per sé.
Un tema essenziale per individui e interi gruppi di persone.
Un tema che attraverso i secoli si ripete senza mai risolversi sebbene possiamo con buona ragione ritenere che molto si sia fatto affinché ognuno di poi considerarsi autodeterminato, ma il traguardo è lontano.
