I remember before I was about to start the training, the Regional manager pops into the training room and asks me if we could kick off the training by her presenting one of their Job Coaches Sam Smith with a trophy. It was to award her on being the Employment Consultant of the month. The regional manager gave a great little speech about Sam’s dedication, great work and consistently hitting her targets. As the day went by, through my own observation, I noticed that Sam stood out. She was highly knowledgeable in Sales, relationship building and led with purpose. So, I naturally approached her and asked if she wanted to be a guest on this podcast, which she said yes to.

Before joining the world of Disability Employment, Sam has been working in business development for 13 years and then took these skills into her current role. Sam does definitely lead with purpose through a passion for changing people's lives. She also does a lot of work and advocacy within the LGBT community and will also share some of the work that she's been doing with Atwork Australia on that topic.

She’s a great networker in the local community of Gippsland and made it her mission to get the word out there about disability employment.

He works for The Salvation Army Employment Plus under The Smart, Skilled & Hired Program which is a NSW Government initiative designed to help young people overcome employment barriers.

I recently had the privilege of having him as a guest on my podcast. He had a lot of valuable insights and advice.

Two things that Adam said that stood out to me during our chat were.

His 3 top tips for reverse marketing:

“Sometimes it's not appropriate to call when it's convenient for ourselves or the consultant. It's most appropriate to call when the business has an opportunity to listen. I guess the second point that I would probably make with be to let your intention known as early on as possible and what I mean with that is, it's not so much about the 'Hi, how are you?' and the small chat, because at the end of the day time in business is valuable and we appreciate time. So, making sure that the conversation is quick, precise and to-the-point is very important. And then the third thing that I would say or would give would be to try and warm up your lead as much as possible. We only know what we know. So that's why talking to people inside the industry, outside the industry when you're out talking to other businesses.”

Important factors to consider when it comes to helping someone become job-ready:

“I guess the big thing that I would say would be about, ensuring that circumstances for your participant or your jobseeker are right to be able to sustain employment. And when we talk about sustain employment, everybody's got different circumstances. My circumstances would be different from the person sitting next to me, and that person’s circumstances would be different from the person sitting next to them. At the end of the day, what we help to do, is remove any barriers that maybe there to employment. Because it can be tough to focus on actually moving forward into work if we’re concerned about where my next meal is coming from or do I have a roof over my head. These kinds of barriers that we probably don't quite often talk enough about, are super important to the likelihood of success in long-term work. By working with people and helping to overcome those barriers, that’s probably where the next stage of building traits of patience, resilience and the ability to communicate effectively really come in. So, it can be a journey to go from point A to point B.”

What we covered in the full podcast:
1. How did Adam get into employment services.
2. Nita is a purpose driven leader, who knows how to create a positive workplace culture in order to boost morale and performance. She has more than 7 years’ experience in operational planning, projects coordination, implementation, and leadership in recruitment and the employment services industry.

One of the reasons that I wanted to interview Nita, was because I’ve worked closely with her and have seen her in action. She’s someone that many employment services managers can learn from. Her staff have nothing but praise for her and the way she leads. Nita not only takes the time to coach her team, but knows how to create a positive workplace culture in order to get the best out of them.
Two things that Nita said that stood out to me during our chat were.

What great leadership means to her
“I’ve always been very passionate about building people’s capacity and team’s capacity to doing bigger and better things. It Doesn’t necessarily mean bigger and better means just placing participants into employment, it also could be learning new skills throughout their careers or preparing more future leaders.”

Advice she would give to new staff members who need to do reverse marketing, but are a little nervous.
“Know your participant, build a relationship with your participant, and that’s when you pick up the phone……….Once you are passionate about it, I think it becomes natural. To me, it doesn't matter what script you have and how many phone calls you make, I think it's quite obvious when you are speaking to employers either by the phone or face-to-face, it is your passion that that will get you through. So, it's about having a buy in in what you're doing and not giving up. Because when we are accepting these roles and we are going to help people, we are becoming a voice for them and we are saying you know what I'm happy to advocate for you and advocating means, at least in disability Employment Services, helping them find a job, helping them feel included and supporting them stay in that employment.”

What we covered in the full podcast:
1.An overview of the Disability Employment Services and parentsNext programs.
2.What great leadership means and how Nita gets the best out of her staff.
3.How there’s no better ROI than spending time with your team.
4.A success story of how Nita’s team at Ability Options changed someone’s life with a disability, by placing them into sustainable employment.
5.How a role was created for a participant with a disability and the positive outcome for both the participant and the workplace it created.
6.The benefits of job carving and why it’s important.
7.The myths and misconceptions in disability employment.
8.How Ability Options takes pride in their core values and how they use them in both recruitment and placing people into work.
9.Advice Nita would give a new staff member who may be a little nervous to do Reverse Marketing.
10.Why Nita chose to work in employment services.

You can connect with Nita Shah on her LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nitashah45/

You can find out more about Ability Options here: https://abilityoptions.org.au/

Find out more about Employment Services Training: https://www.employmentservicestraining.com/

<itunes:author>Rana Kordahi</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>I recently had the privilege of speaking with the business manager of Ability Options Nita Shah.
