My name is Weslie Pearce. And I would like to talk to you about what has inspired me to become a teacher. Well actually at first I wanted to be a speech pathologist. I had a speech impediment when I was little and had very low confidence due to that. I would always hate popcorn reading and presenting in front of the class. For example, when the teacher had the class do popcorn reading I would always look ahead in the reading and practice the big words in my head. To make sure I would say the words correctly in front of my peers. I will talk about this more later in the podcast. But, I decided to not become a speech pathologist because I didn’t want to be in school for a very long time. I got married at 22, I know it’s very different than a lot of people now a days. But, I got married at 22 to my high school sweetheart. And we have always wanted kids at a younger age. I know very different than everyone else now a days. But to become a teacher I only needed to go to school for one extra year; instead, of a speech pathologist where I would have to go to a post-bacc and then a couple other years for the Master’s. And, as a teacher I realized that I will have very similar hours as our kids once we have them so it will allow me to be actively involved in my children’s lives which is very important to me. As a teacher I will still have the opportunity to work with kids, help them and instill confidence in them. And that is why I wanted to be a speech pathologist so I felt like I wasn’t really losing anything becoming a teacher.

I can recall an educational experience that helped me just build resiliency and display it and I actually just talked about this – my speech impediment. Throughout my life I have had people make fun of me how I say certain words. And I even still say words incorrectly. I majored in Linguistics and it helped me understand what I do when I am about to speak. So it really helped me be reflective when I am about to speak and help explain to people why I say words incorrectly. Before I say a word I will visualize all the letters in my head. Making me want to say all the letters. However, English isn’t a phonetic language so every letter doesn’t correspond to a sound. So really I just blame it on the English language because I don’t understand if you don’t need to say a letter then don’t have it be there. But, that’s my personal problem! But I also make incorrect intonations on sounds making the word sound awkward. And This has made me feel like I am not qualified enough to be a teacher and speech pathologist. I still get really nervous speaking in front of my peers because I do not want to say a word wrong. So I will say complicated words in my head multiple times to make sure I will not mess up. Just like when I was in elementary school. However, now as a teacher I want to teach my students to not let side comments affect what they want to do in the future. I want to encourage my students to overcome any hurdles in life and know they can overcome obstacles when they work hard. I want that type of resiliency of always wanting to improve. I want to learn the best methods, strategies, and research to help my students learn. Even now If I forget how to pronounce a word I will ask my husband how to correctly pronounce it. And that is how I want to be as a teacher. I want to have humility and not be afraid to ask questions no matter my age or how much experience I have. I think this will help me thrive as a teacher and an effective teacher.
My faith is a big factor on the type of teacher I want to be. I want to be a positive influence on my students. When they are in my classroom they know they are safe and cared for. While I teach them I also want to instill moral principles that will help them have a better life. I had the opportunity to work at an after-school program in a very bad area in Pomona. BUT I LOVED IT. It was in a very low-economic area. My first day at the job when I got to the school, right away they asked me where I parked. They said if my car was on the street then it will get broken into. It was day light! But I really enjoyed working in Pomona because I felt like I could make a big difference in the kid’s lives. Some short little stories or usual occurrences at school: the majority of parents were fully tatted including face tattoos and I promise I think I saw a tear drop on a parent’s face and I hope you know what that means. Parents would come and pick up their kids and they would smell like weed. On the last week of school we had 2 students deported back into Mexico and that was really heartbreaking and sad. We had Multiple students were in foster care, there were a lot of parents that were in prison. And it was really sad and it made my heart hurt but I felt like I could be such a big influence in the student’s lives because they weer not getting the right attention at home. I feel like I could be that teacher that would help them become a better person. So when I get a teaching job I am applying to the areas were most likely other teachers won’t want to teach at. But I think that’s where Jesus would teach at. He was the one that hung out with the people that were drunks, the prostitutes and everything above because those people need Jesus still. They need to hear the good news and I think that’s my mission as a teacher – as a Christian teacher. To be that light in a very dark area where people do not want to go. So going back to my speech impediment and being really insecure about it. I wish that my teachers knew how insecure I was speaking in front of the class. And I think that will really help me form my educational philosophy and teaching pedagogy because as a teacher I want to personally know each my student. Meaning I want to know their strengths but also know their weaknesses so I can help them and build their weaknesses become their strengths. I also want them to know that I support them. I support them when they are doing really well but also when they didn’t get a very good grade on a test. They know I will always help them to become smarter and become better people. AND THAT IS ALL! WOO! I’m really excited to become a teacher and I can’t wait for all the stories that I’m going to hear. I’m just really excited to work with students and I just love helping people and changing lives. I know it’s going to be really hard but I’m excited. THAAANKS. Okay, bye, too-da-loos.

<itunes:author>Weslie Pearce</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Hey everyone!
