It's the eternal debate, the championship bout for all the credits. . . Star Wars vs. Star Trek: which is better? One seems more suited to conflict; it's literally got "war" in its title. The other's name suggests perhaps a performance fleece and one of those water things you carry on your back with the straw that runs up your sleeve. Assuming you're not mispronouncing it as "track", that is. One conjures images of screaming fans under a sea of waving, day-glo lightsabers, the other a vision of William Shatner yelling at an assemblage of sad men in pointed ears. Put all my money on the 'wars, please.

The reality is somewhat more complicated. Trek incontrovertibly arrived first, beaming onto American TV screens on September 8th, 1966 (September 6th, if you were lucky enough to be Canadian). Star Wars premiered on May 25, 1977, fizzling out of some theaters completely before returning several weeks later on a wave of word-of-mouth positivity. Both franchises are clearly indebted to earlier properties. Star Wars famously began life as George Lucas's desire to do a Flash Gordon-esque space adventure after he lost out on directing the genuine article. Star Trek was preceded by space travel shows and even genre-themed social commentary series, but draws most of its inspiration from Horatio Hornblower novels and Gulliver's Travels (weirdly). Star Trek influenced Star Wars, full stop. George Lucas has said as much, although it was probably within earshot of Gene Roddenberry and its greatest influence may have been Lucas saying "Well, I don't want to do *that*." Star Wars, in turn, influenced Star Trek by making $220 million in its initial box office run (almost $900 million in 2020 bucks). Screw Star Trek: Phase II; Trek was going back to theaters with the entire original cast intact and it was going to be gritty this time! Colors would be drab, the technology more crunchy, two people would be melted by the friendly transporter. Star Trek: The Motion Picture would go on to make $139 million after spending 5 times the budget of Star Wars, which would effectively end Roddenberry's involvement with the franchise until the development of The Next Generation 8 years later. He'd still hang around but be mostly ignored as Trek cinema continued to chase Star Wars and its ever-increasing returns. It wasn't until 1986, when Star Wars had left the cinematic field, that Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home would earn $133 million, 6 times its budget, proving definitively that a Star Trek film can be a runaway success as long as George Lucas is counting money instead of making movies. So who wins? Which is superior: Star Wars or Star Trek? Well, the show isn't called BackWarsing . . . you figure it out.

It's the eternal debate, the championship bout for all the credits. . . Star Wars vs. Star Trek: which is better? One seems more suited to conflict; it's literally got "war" in its title. The other's name suggests perhaps a performance fleece and one of those water things you carry on your back with the straw that runs up your sleeve. Assuming you're not mispronouncing it as "track", that is. One conjures images of screaming fans under a sea of waving, day-glo lightsabers, the other a vision of William Shatner yelling at an assemblage of sad men in pointed ears. Put all my money on the 'wars, please.

The reality is somewhat more complicated. Trek incontrovertibly arrived first, beaming onto American TV screens on September 8th, 1966 (September 6th, if you were lucky enough to be Canadian). Star Wars premiered on May 25, 1977, fizzling out of some theaters completely before returning several weeks later on a wave of word-of-mouth positivity. Both franchises are clearly indebted to earlier properties. Star Wars famously began life as George Lucas's desire to do a Flash Gordon-esque space adventure after he lost out on directing the genuine article. Star Trek was preceded by space travel shows and even genre-themed social commentary series, but draws most of its inspiration from Horatio Hornblower novels and Gulliver's Travels (weirdly). Star Trek influenced Star Wars, full stop. George Lucas has said as much, although it was probably within earshot of Gene Roddenberry and its greatest influence may have been Lucas saying "Well, I don't want to do *that*." Star Wars, in turn, influenced Star Trek by making $220 million in its initial box office run (almost $900 million in 2020 bucks). Screw Star Trek: Phase II; Trek was going back to theaters with the entire original cast intact and it was going to be gritty this time! Colors would be drab, the technology more crunchy, two people would be melted by the friendly transporter. Star Trek: The Motion Picture would go on to make $139 million after spending 5 times the budget of Star Wars, which would effectively end Roddenberry's involvement with the franchise until the development of The Next Generation 8 years later. He'd still hang around but be mostly ignored as Trek cinema continued to chase Star Wars and its ever-increasing returns. It wasn't until 1986, when Star Wars had left the cinematic field, that Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home would earn $133 million, 6 times its budget, proving definitively that a Star Trek film can be a runaway success as long as George Lucas is counting money instead of making movies. So who wins? Which is superior: Star Wars or Star Trek? Well, the show isn't called BackWarsing . . . you figure it out.

OK, now that the actual Holocaust is out of the way, we can try something much more idyllic but still a little bit sinister. In the early days of TV, before we had these "500 channels" with nothing on them (which seems like a bad business model), programs were much different than they were today. Times were simpler, characters were whiter, and everything wrapped up pretty neatly in 30 or 60 minutes (plus commercial breaks). There were daring private eyes, brilliant lawyers and cops, and cowboys cowboys cowboys, and all were morally impeachable. Sure, they'd make mistakes, they'd be tempted by evil, but they would always win out in the end because that's what TV was for: presenting morally enriching tales that featured just a hint of violence and sex. Drain all vice completely out of '60s TV and you get The Andy Griffith Show, an anodyne picture of rural America in the 20th century that's more fictional than the Federation of the 24th. Andy Taylor is the sheriff of Mayberry, North Carolina, a town where the deputy only has one bullet, all problems can be solved by home-cookin', and black people simply do not exist.

Fast-forward 300 years to a distant alien planet that is eerily similar to 20th century Earth (is that Floyd's barbershop?) where a deadly plague has wiped out everyone over the age of 18, leaving the children to frolic in the ruins. But these are no ordinary children; they, too, are the victims of the age-prolonging experiments that initially caused the plague, each of them growing slowly, inexorably toward puberty where they too will join the mountain of corpses that fills the old fishin' hole. Star Trek wasn't the first or arguably best show to employ genre thrills in the service of didactic storytelling (see "Twilight Zone, The") but it made a meal out of taking the TV conventions of the decades prior and putting an alien face on them, posing questions about social issues that were rarely as black-and-white as some of those alien faces. It wasn't by any means a blameless show, but it presented a world that was more diverse, more frightening, and more real than any of Aunt Bee's pickle-induced nightmares, and in doing so, blazed a trail for socially-conscious storytelling that would lead into the 21st century and beyond.

On this episode, we discuss the rigid but airy structure of The Andy Griffith Show, the darker implications of Mayberry's sterile world and its effect on the '60s audience, immature depictions of neuroatypical characters, the complaints Star Trek received over the "gross" Miri, letting details slide so you can sell your audience on a big ask, the complicated gender politics of the episode, and the singularly unique Michael J. The 20th century has been the host to an unbelievable number of genocides, across the continents of Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America and if you consider the last 50 years of the 19th century, too, you add some impressive work from North America and Australia, as well. Antarctica, thankfully, lags far behind in mass deaths. It’s foolish to believe that genocide is a modern invention, though modern weapons have certainly made it a more efficient process. But, the spread of telecommunications, journalism, and mass media has certainly made every genocide and act of atrocity more visible and more haunting. The horrors of the Holocaust stand out as almost medieval and are even more shocking when you consider that you can still email people who were victims of it. Immediately after the fall of Fortress Europe and the end of World War II, the effort began to bring the perpetrators of the Holocaust to justice, but that effort quickly became somewhat ambiguous. Many who were put on trial claimed to be “just following orders”, German citizens claimed to have no knowledge of the death camps, and the Allied authorities were more concerned with the looming Soviet menace than disrupting the lives of the Germans they would rely on to hold the line against communist encroachment.

That’s where “Judgment at Nuremberg” begins. It’s 1948 and the trials which were meant to bring truth and reconciliation to the German people and the world are quickly becoming a political liability. Former circuit judge Dan Haywood arrives from Maine ready to impartially dispense justice on war criminals, but he soon finds himself navigating a morass of resentful Germans and fearful witnesses. The opposite is true of 1975’s “The Man in the Glass Booth”, in which Mossad agents kidnap a wealthy American immigrant who was secretly Col. Adolf Dorff, the SS master of a notorious death camp during the war. He is brought to Jerusalem to stand trial, ala Eichmann, for his crimes against the Jewish people. Only trouble is, gee whiz, Dorff may actually be Arthur Goldman, a Jew and a Holocaust survivor who has taken his effort to combat Holocaust denial to the nth degree. Star Trek, which has never met a historical event it couldn’t allegorize, throws its own hat in the ring with “Duet”, a DS9 episode that features Aamin Marritza, a Cardassian impersonating *another* Cardassian, Gul Darhe’el, who was the commandant of the notoriously deadly Gallitep work camp. His purpose in doing so is presumably to call attention to the Bajoran massacre at the end of the Occupation, an event that unlike our real-world Holocaust has no concentration camp footage, no somber documentaries detailing the loss of life. It’s an event that is easily dismissed by many Cardassians and Marritza is willing to cast himself in the role of the villain in order to see his people’s crimes revealed.

On this episode, we discuss the complicated emotions present in these works, the multi-generational cast of prodigies that lent their talents to "Nuremberg", the open-ended mystery of the unhinged "Booth", the superlative work of Harris Yulin and Nana Visitor in "Duet", and how each reflects the unique views on the Holocaust from the eras in which they were made. We also discuss Young Sheldon books, judges judging judges, classic and modern acting styles, wacky '70s plays, bleeding feet symbolism, hanging with JC, boiling frogs, a lot of corona talk, empty wrestling arenas, dying over Bloodshot, gritty '80s punk Cardassians, stabby drunks, and our tech exchange takes a turn for the depressing!

It's "Apocalypse Now"; what else do you need to know? It's possible that more ink has been spilled over this movie than the war it depicts, with documentaries like "Hearts of Darkness", stacks of books, and endless interviews with Francis Ford Coppola himself all revealing the same fact: this was a movie made recklessly by assholes. Or to quote Willard when faced Kurtz asks for an evaluation of his methods: "I don't see any method at all." That doesn't mean it's not an all-time classic, it just means you don't have to risk insanity, bankruptcy, heart attacks, or seven years of bad luck just to make art.

The chaos of "Apocalypse Now"'s production is obviously nothing compared to the chaos of the war in Vietnam or even the now historic chaos of the Belgian Congo, the subject of the 1902 novella, "Heart of Darkness", which "Apocalypse Now" was based on. The themes of Joseph Conrad's story of European colonialism are frightening recognizable in both the military interventionism of the 1960s and unceasing belief in American exceptionalism in the 21st century. Conrad's "based-on-real-experiences" story is concerned with vicious mercantilism while Apocalypse Now follows a proxy war where the fight against communism becomes increasingly abstract. But both works are a study of the universal evils of devaluing a populace and putting economic or political profit over human lives.

The Federation of Star Trek is supposed to be above these kinds of problems. After all, no money means no economy (at least one we can recognize) and no economy means no economic exploitation. However, the self-professed enlightenment of many a Starfleet officer has a tendency to melt away when vital resources like dilithium or unobtanium or territory are threatened. In "The Wounded", a Kurtz-like Starfleet captain named Maxwell is convinced that the Cardassians are using cargo ships to ferry war supplies, and he begins a one-man war on Cardassia that the "bureaucrats" have no stomach for. The Enterprise is given a mission to terminate his command and O'Brien, a man who has seen the same horrors of war that Maxwell has, must be the one to confront his former captain. On this episode, we discuss the tortured process of making the film, the enduring resonance of "Heart of Darkness", the Scramble for Africa, world-class f*ckface Leopold II, the societal inability to countenance atrocity, the serendipitous creation of many of the film's great scenes, the value of creative limits and obstacles, cuisine exchange, trusting Michael Bay, a disappointing hypothetical 4th season of TOS, Martin Sheen freaking out TSA employees, and never getting out of the boat unless you're going all the way.

Are we all slaves to our nature? Or does that only apply to arachnids who need to bum a lift somewhere? That's the question debated by the two pieces of media we're looking at today. "The Crying Game" is a 1992 film about LGBTQ culture in '90s London that was directed by a straight man and features a nominally straight male protagonist. "Scorpion" is about a peaceful exploration ship that is making its way home by facilitating a war between two of the galaxy's greatest foes. Being "true to yourself" is difficult when you're not sure who you really are, and none of us can ever be sure that we're actually the frog and not the scorpion.

Some episodes of Trek are so iconic, they define what a generation considers to be "Star Trek". TOS had "The Trouble With Tribbles", "The Naked Time", "Arena", and more. TNG has "The Best of Both Worlds", "The Measure of a Man", "The Inner Light", and of course "Darmok".

"Darmok" features an alien race that communicates by cultural allusion who kidnap Captain Picard to a desert planet where he must partake in a symbolic hunting ritual to further the comity of their two species. Let's see Battlestar Galactica do that. Plus, it's quintessentially TNG; if Captain Kirk had to fight an electric triceratops, he'd have drop-kicked it on arrival and then lectured Paul Winfield about respecting the Federation's sovereignty. This is a plot that could only work with Jean-Luc Picard in the lead, throwing himself fully into trying to comprehend the incomprehensible, because it would mean a net gain of understanding in the universe. Hilariously, his mission to understand Dathon and the Children of Tama nearly fails at the outset simply because he refuses a proferred knife, assuming it to be a token of hostility. Classic JL.

"Darmok" may be one of the most famous examples of the classic "man and blank are stranded together and must ally or perish", but there's another nearly forgotten version of the tale that contains just as much warmth and optimism as Trek's take. "Enemy Mine" is a nearly forgotten film and, at first glance, it's not hard to see why: outdated special effects, corny dialogue, and a climax lifted straight out of an '80s action film. But, what promises to be a clash between stellar enemies becomes a tale of survival, friendship, and family, where our heroes must overcome not only linguistic separation but biology and societal programming, as well. Just keep Mickey Mouse's name out your mouth.

Is Star Trek scary? A future with no paychecks, fake booze, and the ever-present fear you may be in a simulation is scary. Trek rarely gets to do horror because face it: in one hand you have a device that tells you exactly where Michael Myers is and in the other, a device that can phaser him right to the ground. The rationality and advanced technology of the Federation means superstitions are scarce and death is (mostly) curable. But when that technology goes awry, or when it's alien technology we don't understand, the fear factor can become pleasantly elevated.

That's where the Borg come in. They're robot zombies whose guns are often bigger than the Federations. They don't feel pity or remorse or fear, and they absolutely will not stop until something something. They're probably the closest that Trek gets to a matinee monster and they're scary for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the infection-slash-possession they represent. Get a little Borg on you and you could BECOME a Borg and suddenly be really interested in getting your former friends to join the club. The Borg are so popular an adversary on Star Trek, they even found a way to have them on Enterprise, which is set 200 years before their first appearance in the franchise, and to do it the Masters of Trek turned to one of the masters of modern horror, John Carpenter.

Uncle John is a versatile filmmaker who has written and directed films with a variety of settings and character types. If there's a unifying thread in his films, it's probably the emotion of paranoia of the unknown and none of his films embody that emotion better than 1982's "The Thing", a film which was mostly panned on its release but is now rightly heralded as one of the most fraught and disturbing sci-fi horror flicks of the 20th century. When searching for a way to bring the Borg to Enterprise, what could be better than to have hapless Federation scientists find something buried in the Arctic ice, waiting to revive and begin transforming the world in its image? Someone get Wilford Brimley on the phone!

On this episode, we talk about John Carpenter's masterpiece and Trek's college try at homaging it. Star Trek is the future . . . so where are all the robots? Nearly every artificial intelligence that Enterprise encountered during its five-year mission got blasted, talked to death, or both (usually after a smooch from Captain Kirk). Gene Roddenberry was a humanist in every sense of the word and the vision of a utopian future for humanity that he wanted to portray had little room for any artificial beings or aids; he wanted humanity to pull itself up by its own fleshy bootstraps. Nevermind the fact that automated manufacturing, self-regulating computer systems, and financial algorithms already made up the backbone of the economic and social prosperity that we enjoyed in the late 20th century. How much more would the utopia of the Federation in the 23rd century rely on robots and AI for economic regulation? Doesn't matter 'cause Kirk just told them to jump off a cliff.

So robots, mostly, were relegated to villains and boogiemen on early Trek, from the unfeeling Nomad, to the devious Ruk, to the all-too-human M5 computer. Still, the galaxy couldn't be in danger every week, and as Trek stretched its comedic muscles in its second season, robots on the show found a new role: comedic straightmen. "I, Mudd" finds returning ne'er-do-well Harcourt Fenton Mudd the captive ruler of a planet of androids who are programmed to serve and study humanity, whether humanity likes it or not. It's a chilling premise, but the episode instead milks it for comedy, as our normally stoic crew acts (or over-acts) unhinged to exploit the robots' reliance on logic and the directives of their programming.

Russian-American author Isaac Asimov wasn't afraid of a robot-filled future, nor did he think that a "rise of the robots" would be a cold, emotionless tide. Instead, his short stories and novels are filled with human-like robots who wrestle with their responsibility to serve humans but protect themselves, to emulate their creators but remain frustratingly behind them. Positronic robots are, by design, unable to harm humankind but one can imagine that someday their mission to serve humanity could be updated to include, like Mudd's androids, a measure of control in the relationship. On this episode, we compare and contrast the episode "I, Mudd" with its namesake, Asimov's seminal 1950 short story collection, "I, Robot". We talk about Asimov's unornamented prose, his vision of a world that robots will save whether we like it or not, the complex implications of the seemingly simple Three Laws, looking to "The Wizard of Oz" for a classic Trek antagonist, the friendship between Asimov and Roddenberry, poking fun at your own show, "Take my wives . . . please!", engaging "Trickster" mode, Leonard Nimoy: Robot Lawyer, red hair as characterization, missing out on a robot "Citizen Kane", the ancient "I, Robot" arcade game, and Mark Zuckerberg comes up more times than we're comfortable with.

There's a reason that the Pepe Silvia scene from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has become a popular meme. In our post-Watergate/Gamergate/Deflategate/et al. world, governmental conspiracy has gone from something the Washington Post investigates to fodder for the obsessive, "crazy" tinfoil hat characters of prime-time TV. Conspiracy was popular as a subject long before ex-President Nixon took his last helicopter ride out of Washington, but Watergate seemed to solidify paranoia as a *genre*, leading to the classic paranoid thrillers of the '70s like "Three Days of the Condor", "The Conversation", and of course, "All the President's Men". Generally, conspiracy films end with justice done and our hero's integrity being rewarded. Unfortunately, however, the actual process of uncovering a conspiracy tends to be a long and frustrating one, replete with half-truths and redactions and missing the satisfying third act reveal, the bad guys in question going unpunished and often keeping the positions they abused in the first place.

Such was the Iran-Contra affair, a twisted, multi-national criminal conspiracy to fund right-wing rebels in a Central American nation that the Reagan Administration used illegal weapons sales and drug money to support. Iran-Contra was all anyone on either side of the aisle could talk about in the late '80s; in 2019, it's a barely remembered footnote of the Reagan presidency, as is the stack of pardons handed out to nearly everyone involved by Reagan's successor, George H. W. Bush. Bush (and his son) went on to be president, the Sandinista party (with a new coat of paint) remains in power in Nicaragua to this day, and Ollie North got a TV show on Fox News. Players with bit parts---like CIA-recruited pilot Barry Seal, focus of the 2017 movie "American Made"---got a bullet for their troubles, disposable by design and by policy.

The TNG episode "Too Short a Season" and the conspiracy it contains doesn't have a Barry Seal character exactly. Imagine instead that Ronald Reagan himself---the "Great Communicator"---began his diplomatic career by secretly negotiating with terrorists and giving them exactly what they wanted. There's a reason that the Pepe Silvia scene from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has become a popular meme. In our post-Watergate/Gamergate/Deflategate/et al. world, governmental conspiracy has gone from something the Washington Post investigates to fodder for the obsessive, "crazy" tinfoil hat characters of prime-time TV. Conspiracy was popular as a subject long before ex-President Nixon took his last helicopter ride out of Washington, but Watergate seemed to solidify paranoia as a *genre*, leading to the classic paranoid thrillers of the '70s like "Three Days of the Condor", "The Conversation", and of course, "All the President's Men". Generally, conspiracy films end with justice done and our hero's integrity being rewarded. Unfortunately, however, the actual process of uncovering a conspiracy tends to be a long and frustrating one, replete with half-truths and redactions and missing the satisfying third act reveal, the bad guys in question going unpunished and often keeping the positions they abused in the first place.

Such was the Iran-Contra affair, a twisted, multi-national criminal conspiracy to fund right-wing rebels in a Central American nation that the Reagan Administration used illegal weapons sales and drug money to support. Iran-Contra was all anyone on either side of the aisle could talk about in the late '80s; in 2019, it's a barely remembered footnote of the Reagan presidency, as is the stack of pardons handed out to nearly everyone involved by Reagan's successor, George H. W. Bush. Bush (and his son) went on to be president, the Sandinista party (with a new coat of paint) remains in power in Nicaragua to this day, and Ollie North got a TV show on Fox News. Players with bit parts---like CIA-recruited pilot Barry Seal, focus of the 2017 movie "American Made"---got a bullet for their troubles, disposable by design and by policy.

The TNG episode "Too Short a Season" and the conspiracy it contains doesn't have a Barry Seal character exactly. Imagine instead that Ronald Reagan himself---the "Great Communicator"---began his diplomatic career by secretly negotiating with terrorists and giving them exactly what they wanted. Now, after 45 years of lies and cover-ups, he's returning to the planet in question to atone for his crimes . . . as a sweaty 25-year-old? Star Trek!

It's tough to improve on Shakespeare. Sure, the guy's got a cultural monopoly going since he happened to write his plays in English, and America exports more culture than we do bullets. But you have to admit, the guy's pretty good. It would be the height of hubris then, you'd have to agree, to try and rewrite one of his most famous and beloved plays in an attempt to give it a more raw and modern take on power and politics. And an expanded role for Falstaff, 'natch. And yet, Australian actor and former thin person Joel Edgerton did exactly that for his Netflix "Henry V" adaptation, "The King". This contemporary revision of Shakespeare's mostly nakedly propagandistic play strips out the impassioned speeches, the racial tensions, and most of the poignancy of a treatise on the responsibilities of a head of state that still has something to teach modern audiences, 400 years after it was first performed on stage.

Meanwhile, 1000 years after Henry and his men landed on the beaches of Normandy, Captain Jean-Luc Picard finds himself weighing the same responsibilities and consequences that Henry did on the night before Agincourt. A Romulan admiral has risked ex-communication and death to defect across the Neutral Zone in order to warn Starfleet that the Romulan Empire has established a secret beachhead in anticipation of an all-out invasion of the Federation. Should Picard strike first and expose the Romulan plot, saving billions? Or is he leading his crew that is sworn to follow him into a trap and an ignoble death?

We're contemplating what makes a good king (or a good captain) this week, as we compare these two ruminations on war and rule. We also discuss "fixing" Shakespeare, drool acting, why Trek keeps going back to Shakespeare, the episode's unique premise, the unrealized potential of the Romulans, shouting=acting, and the Data ex Machina. Quick, what am I describing? Giant lizard, arrow-shaped rock formations, slow-motion choreography, white powder on the ground? Okay, "last year's Burning Man" was a pretty good guess, but we're talking about the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Arena"! For the uneducated, "Arena" IS Trek: rubber-masked aliens, bare desert sets, two-fisted Canadians . . . its indelible visuals have made it shorthand for "Star Trek-type show", even 50 years and 5 additional series later. But under the rubber mask, "Arena" is more than just a bout of reptilian pugilism. It holds the same themes of war, wonder, revenge, and forgiveness that you can find in any era of Trek.

So, too, is Fredrick Brown's short story, "Arena". Released at the climax of WWII, it presents a similar situation; a human and an alien enter champion combat for the fate of their races while a god-like alien looks on. But, in a reflection of its times, "Arena" the story is more concerned with humanity's triumph and ingenuity than peace or understanding between races. And the alien, though no less abhorrent, is merely a relentless, remorseless opponent, with no excuse for its brutality. Likewise, our hero Carson sets about his task of eliminating the other with all the vigor you'd expect from a white, male American spaceman. God-like aliens, place your bets!

Some works of art are unassailable in their perfection . . . the Sistine Chapel, the Starry Night, the KFC Double Down. Criticism of them goes beyond merely evaluating their construction and extends instead into the effect they've had on society and culture itself. If theater is life, cinema is art, and television is furniture, the movie "Casablanca" would undoubtedly be film's Mona Lisa or, at the very least, Sunflowers. The question, "Is it good?", has been answered by time. The question, "Is it still relevant?", is possibly apter; it is, after all, nearly 80 years old. But the positive evidence of the film's endurance is present in its countless cultural homages and its familiarity to people who have never even sat through it.

On its surface, the desperate and war-weary world of "Casablanca" doesn't look much like the world of Star Trek. DS9, maybe, but certainly not TNG. The titular city of the film (and real-life WWII) is haunted by a panoply of refugees, displaced by the war and by the Nazis who move among them, discussing over drinks who to conquer next. It's a city divided between the hopeful and those who sell hope at the market price. Where the characters of Star Trek are noble and uncompromising, Casablanca's heroes live ignobly, victims of despair and their own convictions.
Star Trek embodies humanity's aspirations, but films like "Casablanca" remind us of the cruel realities of war and the acts of both injustice and heroism that happen in every century.

Starfleet is what you get when hippies have no man to rail against, when hippies *are* the man (and woman and antennaed being) but can also bathe and hold down jobs. And in the Hippie Federation, everything is cool. Believe in God, don't believe in God, claim you are God . . . all valid options. But in the rapidly developing theocratic societies of colonial New England, God was your deity, boss, and president all rolled into one and breaking the law, including God's law, meant you had a date with the gibbet and you're buying.

That's the world the characters of "The Crucible" find themselves in as Arthur Miller's play begins. Puritans are, despite all efforts to the contrary, still human, but when lust and lies are capital crimes, some "righteous" citizens are willing to exploit Salem's fear of the supernatural to settle scores, to increase their holdings, and to try and possess someone they think they deserve. On the other side of the equation, the very real Salem Witch Trials also occurred in the Star Trek universe, and the fear and hatred on display in early America cost us a relationship with an alien race who was looking to share their extraordinary gifts, and Kirk and the Enterprise are being put through their own trial over humanity's rejection of "The Magics of Megas-Tu".

It's another long episode but our first recorded in person and our first Star Trek animated series episode! Join us as we examine the chilling real-world events in 17th century Massachusets Bay Colony that claimed 19 lives and set neighbor against neighbor. We discuss the historical details of the witch hunts of the late 1600s, the actual victims and their persecutors, the "spiritual evidence" brought against the accused, the sexist and greedy motives of the accusers, the continued poignance of Miller's play and the author's own courage under persecution, the movie's stellar cast, and the possible chemical causes of "demonic possession."

We also talk about the subtle subversiveness of the animated episode, finishing the 5-year mission, making friends with the devil, being Promethean, Wishbone in space, Jimmy Doohan voicing everyone, tripping on rye, Frank Miller's The Crucible, Punky Brewster's dad, the ultimate Hollywood weasel, dancing with the black man, Paul mf'in Scofield, shooting nets, where toll roads come from, Gooey labels this a "hangout movie", and Kal gets into his theater past!

Starfleet is nominally a military organization (the ranks and uniforms give it away) but the heroes of your favorite Star Trek series tend to do more exploring than soldiering and attend more string concertos than memorial services. But what if you take away the holodecks and chocolate sundaes and thrust the shiny, happy people of the Federation into a kill-or-be-killed scenario on a bare and worthless scrap of rock? Will their enlightened principles die before they do?

That's the question "The Siege of AR-558" asks. and in doing so it references real-life battles like Guadalcanal in WWII and films based on them, like "The Thin Red Line" and "Hell is for Heroes". Trek has ever been a commentary on the present, rather than the future, and in this episode and the last season of DS9, the Federation, like 20th and 21st century America, sees itself being torn between its non-interventionist ideals and its desire to remake the world in its image.

We once again go long on this episode, trying to contain the epic scope of the War in the Pacific and the War in the Alpha Quadrant. We discuss the historical battle of Guadalcanal, the confident filmmaking of Terrence Malick and the 20-year road that led to "The Thin Red Line", the amazing amount of material that DIDN'T make it into the film, letting chaos be your commentary, bringing darkness and real stakes to the Star Trek universe, pathos vs. bathos, making EVERYTHING a character, depicting disability in Star Trek, and how Nog was a better Wesley Crusher.

It's also an episode with some crunchy sci-fi elements, like matter-antimatter reactions, gravitational planetary collapse, and the crew getting drunk and inventing time travel and forgetting to tell anyone. Then, we move to the 24th century, where everyone is a lot hornier and programmed in multiple techniques. The ship is in the path of a deadly stellar fragment and Captain Wesley won't budge until he gets double dessert!
