And why are birthworkers placed at the center of something that - by its very nature - must be faced alone?

When you look deeper at traditional initiations across cultures, the structure is always the same: 
1 The initiate is prepared in advance. Spiritual mentorship before entering the wild.
2 The threshold is crossed alone.No one guiding, or to outsource to.
3 The return is witnessed.The moment the initiate emerges, changed, and is fully received by the community. 

How did birth—the most ancient, organic initiation of all—get framed differently?
Why, when it comes to birth, do they believe a woman cannot do it?
Do they think she is incapable?
Do they believe birth is different?
Do they not trust that every woman can walk into the wild alone?

Something isn’t adding up.
And I'm getting loud about it, because it's keeping women disconnected and disempowered.
And I feel like there's an agenda. And I'm not OK with it.

After experiencing a traumatic first birth, Erin decided she was going to freebirth her second child and during her pregnancy weaved a beautiful web of wise women around her; who would later become her supportive tribe when she birthed her babe early.

Erin speaks so powerfully and so candidly about the loss of her baby girl and the medicine she received in being able to do so. She touches on the stigma around miscarriages and the unspoken process that becomes so dehumanised by the way society speaks about it and her newfound understanding that she wishes to share with other women - that death is sad, but not scary.

Erin shares about the painful moment she first realised her baby had died, she describes the physiology of birthing her baby undisturbed and freely in her home, the difference between fear and body wisdom/intuition, the ways in she which she honoured her daughter, herself and her experience - and expresses so perfectly the duality of celebrating life and death together.

Erin shares the gratitude and growth she leant into, her new relationship to life and birth via the desire she had to experience it all (physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally), the reclamation of, and reconnection to her body wisdom, through witnessing her body birth her babe unassisted - and the beautiful way she speaks about it all with her youngest daughter.

Erin now facilitates Early Birth Shamanic Healing and Celebratory Ceremony and Ritual for women and is also now teaching Birthworkers how to come into relationship with death as a part of birthwork, so that they are able to support birthing women without fear.

But once there was meconium in her waters, and her Midwife had consulted the hospital behind her back, she didn't feel supported anymore. Kendall's homebirth transfer resulted in a traumatic first birth. She lost trust in herself and became confused as to why her experience was so different from the birth vision she had worked so hard to manifest.

Second time pregnant, Kendall spontaneously cancelled her one and only Midwife appointment to go surfing with her husband - and from that day forward took sole responsibility of her prenatal care. Kendall rented an Air BnB and found a supportive birth partner in her sister, alongside her husband.

A momentary lapse in confidence during labour saw Kendall heading back to the same hospital she had birthed her first son. But divine intervention (and 2 cattle grids!) swept in en route to stop that from happening. I'll leave the rest of this epic story for you to listen to!

She speaks of the way her intuition was ignored, the way in which Chandler was passed from Paediatrician to Paediatrician, from Child Health Nurse, to Speech Therapist, to Occupational Therapist.

She discusses the way the Public Health System took no accountability and gave her no answers; diagnosing Chandler with a vaccine induced brain injury, but then revoking the diagnosis and wiping all evidence from his file. Yet advising her to continue him on the schedule...

For the last 5 years; Melanie and her husband have spent all of their time, money and energy on healing their son from within, after the medical system failed to support them.

With the threat of a c-section overshadowing both of her induced births, for no medical reason at all - she decided that, surely, there had to be a better way if she did decide to have a third child.

Emily awoke to the unprofessionalism and inaccuracy of the medicalised birth system pretty quickly, after the misdiagnosis of her 'large' baby (which in fact turned out to be 'small'); and the unnecessary urgency of a suggested c-section. Which Emily believes had more to do with her Obstetrician's shift ending, than the safety of her, or her baby.

After fate led Emily to connecting with a like-minded wise woman, who offered to support her on her third birthing journey, there was no way Emily was stepping back into the system.

Emily shares with us the story of her unhindered, uninterrupted, physiological birth; at home and in freedom. And the noticeable differences she viewed in her third child post birth.

After 2 previous birth experiences that were unnecessarily sabotaged by the medical system, Mel decided she was not going to be a part of that system for the birth of her third child. She was no longer going to do what she was told and allow the same things to happen again. So she decided to opt out of that system.

Mel speaks about the moment the term 'freebirthing' came into her consciousness and the healing journey of questioning and re-framing her 2 previous birth experiences, to awaken to the painful truths of what had unfolded.

Mel's medicalised birth experiences were so frighteningly similar to other Mamas; a non present Midwife, an intimidating OB telling her to 'get it done', internal vaginal exams, misinformation presented to her during prenatal care that was later absent on her file, a non consensual episiotomy, an unnecessary vacuum delivery, failure to progress - all the things that became unacceptable to Mel as a birthing woman third time round.

And you wait til you hear her story of free birthing! Think rainforest, back deck, incense burning and a beautiful 'earth babe' (as her Mama describes her) daughter entering the world...you're going to love it!
