It looks at how myth and myth making, memory and place form part of national identity and community.
While some images reflect on borders, borderlands and territory; a puritan approach to food and the ironies of daily life are also commented on. The viewer is asked to consider what is really being protected and why. We chatted about this as well as her other ongoing projects, and about Lucy's passion for 'Slow Art', and the importance of community engagement within the arts, especially in rural areas. Lucy also talks about her newest project, based around the Ancient Irish Epic An TÁIN BÓ CÚALNGE. (see below for link to the text)

From blackwatervalleymakers.com :
'Lucy Phelan tells stories and explores the interaction between people and their world through large scale installations and art interventions. Familiar fables, legends, animals and gods are used in the work as iconic visual signposts toward a readable narrative.

Each theme or story is developed and explored over time, often starting with a single drawing or print. The piece mutates and evolves into a multi-faceted installation or intervention as the storyis retold and the characters developed.

The time span involved in the making is important to the work. Themes are revisited and changed. The act of making is a basic human experience. Lucy Phelan holds a BA (Hons) Fine Art Printmaking CCAD. What many may not be so aware of is John's work at the Aislinn Centre in Ballyraggett, Co Kilkenny, where he spent 19 years working with young adults affected by addiction.

In this episode, I was delighted to talk to John about his Exhibition "2 Faces of the Same Coin", which brings together some of the student work from his time in the Aislinn centre, as well as some new work of his own. The exhibition gives an insight into the world of art as a tool for recovery, and displays John's dedication and emotional investment in the young people he taught. She is accused of being a changeling and is ultimately burned to death at the hands of her husband in Tipperary in 1895. The character of Brigid is the main narrator throughout the performance but her story is also told by a host of other characters. She tells the bittersweet story of her life as a successful businesswoman living in a patriarchal society and the details which lead to her tragic death.

This moving play brings forth a whole slew of issues - issues of inequality, tradition and superstition, progression and ignorance, group mentality and individual steadfastness, independence and interdependence and the role of women in early 20th century rural Irish
society.

https://www.facebook.com/pg/Brigid-Cleary-1848265615387122/posts/

https://connachttribune.ie/savage-killing-message-times-444

Contact: southtippartspodcast@gmail.com</itunes:summary><itunes:duration>2345</itunes:duration><itunes:keywords>arts,brigidcleary,culture,ireland,theatre,tipperary</itunes:keywords><itunes:explicit>clean</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="https://d3wo5wojvuv7l.cloudfront.net/t_rss_itunes_square_1400/images.spreaker.com/original/e14a4298d0a7d3c618255a7381e84b31.jpg"/><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Episode 8 - Reviewing Clonmel Junction Arts Festival 2019

In this episode, I chat with Billy Barrett, Junction's volunteer extraordinaire and manager of this year's cabaret venue about his experiences.
