Porsche Design launched a limited edition timepiece: the Chronograph 1 — Rennsport Reunion 7 Edition. In honor of 75 years of Porsche, only 75 will be sold. Based on the Chronograph 1 from 1972, the Rennsport Reunion 7 Edition revisits a timeless design with improved, modern materials.

The Petersen Automotive Museum has opened a new exhibit located in the Mullin Family Grand Salon on the first floor, set to run through March 15, 2020, titled “Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy.” This exhibit (over 50 vehicles from 30 production and studio resources, included with The Petersen's own ample collection) is the largest museum exhibition of sci-fi vehicles in the world, and is highlighted by automobiles, costumes, props, and original blueprints from classic and modern-day film series and video games such as "Back to the Future," “Transformers,” “Iron Man,” “Mad Max,” “Halo,” "Knight Rider" - KITT, "Man From U.N.C.L.E." - AMT Piranha, and much more.

The media-only preview on May 4th, 2019 commenced with a panel discussion featuring some of the most celebrated film producers, movie car designers, and coordinators of the past 30+ decades who covered some of the backstories of some of film’s most iconic vehicles, discuss how Hollywood’s “cars of the future” are created, and what they think could be next.

The panel discussion was moderated by film critic, writer, producer Scott Mantz who introduced himself as not just a film and car geek ... but with the added level of also being a huge Si-Fi fan as well, so he was over the moon to be included with this group of folks to interview/moderate.

The panelists included:

** George Hull (Film Designer for “Blade Runner 2049,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” etc.)

** Josh Hancock (Picture Car Coordinator, President of Joshcar Inc., etc.)

Shipped without a powerplant due to it not being ready in time for the show, the engine-less body was impounded by U.S. Customs when Europe became embroiled in World War II. After trading hands at a public auction and receiving a Cadillac engine, it eventually wound up at a used car lot in Honolulu until it was bought by a military serviceman.

Following his death, it was abandoned by his widow in the 1970s and sold to a tow-truck driver for $1,200. It took four years of negotiation, but Peter Mullin and Jim Hull eventually purchased the car in 1985 and spearheaded a restoration that included the installation of the original 4.5-liter V-12 engine that can be tracked back to Count Hubertus von Doenhoff.

You are a first year race car driver for a first year team competing in the Pirelli World Challenge in the GTS SprintX Class driving an Austrian manufactured KTM X-Bow GT4 and have been able to drive at two event venues in the 2018 season. We are conducting this interview after a fairly successful two-race event weekend at Lime Rock Park at the Lime Rock Grand Prix - but more about this later.

The first venue was the two-race weekend of the Grand Prix of Texas at the Circuit Of The Americas (COTA). A quick review of the event shows that a field of 38 cars participated and that in the first practice your car was P30 and the second practice had you placing at P21 and Qualifications at P25 of 37 cars. Tell us about your impressions on being at and preparing to race at COTA before any races were run after driving in the Lotus Cup USA Series where you were Champion for 2016 and 2017.

The racing at COTA was probably a bit tougher than all of the build up and preparation given that at Race 1 the Marco Polo Motorsports KTM X-Bow finished at P28 of 37 cars.

Race 2 had the Marco Polo Motorsports No. 71 KTM X-Bow Grid at P30 and finish at P25.

You needed to complete your studies at USC in Architecture, and graduate - then it is off for preparations for the Grand Prix of Lime Rock.

The shake down preparations were held at three tracks. Two in California and one in Oregon [at Portland International Raceway]. The two sessions in California were held at Willow Springs International Raceway and Buttonwillow in California's Central Valley. In both of these sessions you were joined by former Formula One and KTM staff driver, Tomas Enge as a driving coach.

What core precepts did you learn from Tomas and what is your best memory of those three days of Grand Prix of Lime Rock preparation?

You arrive at Lime Rock Park [in Connecticut] - what are your first impressions achieved from the track inspection walk?

In Practice 1 you place P6 of 33 cars, Practice 2 a P4, and in Qualifications a Pole position at P1. Through the two practice sessions, did you feel you had the car and set up given the improvement from the two sessions to race for the Pole position? Walk us through this.

Race 1 was a fairly close race, without telling us the result, review with us the basics of transition of starting from the Pole and having to defend this position at a place like Lime Rock Park.

Yes! You won your first Pirelli World Challenge race and did it by a margin of only 3.3 seconds. How was that?

Race 2 / Round 6 started off really tight for the first stint of the race. Before you had to come in for the mandatory pitstop, a pair of Audi R8s were dogging you at .1 to .5 for the laps leading up to the stops. Tell us what you learned by being in such tight quarters since they were basically in your tailpipe?

Through 56 minutes of a 1 hour race, you were able to pilot the No. 71 KTM X-Bow to as much as a 16 second lead then something went wrong. Tell us your thinking over the last 4 minutes as you struggled to finish the race.

Still, you finished at P9 in a field of 31 cars. It would have been nice to capture both races in a two race weekend but heck, there are 2/3rds of a field that would still loved to have your race at the end, and more than this many drivers would have loved to have the full weekend.

Masahiko (Jack) Kobayashi
Jack originally trained and practiced as a fashion designer in Tokyo. He quit that to move to California and the design of automobiles. In 20 years at Subaru, he was responsible for eight (yes 8!) production vehicles, came to be called “Hit Maker”, founded Michigan and California studios, and was Director of Global Advanced Design. His works include: original Outback, Legacy GT, several STis and Foresters, and the smash hit Crosstrek. He recently became an independent designer.

Praveen Penmetsa
Praveen Penmetsa is the CEO of engineering powerhouse Motivo. Before founding Motivo, Praveen led the development of numerous projects for automotive and aerospace clients at Southern California’s famous MillenWorks. He and Motivo have overseen engineering on over 350 projects ranging from flying cars to harvesting robots.

Richard Plavetich
A studio engineer and leader with vast experience, Richard manages Nissan’s design studio operations in La Jolla. Prior to that he was studio engineer for Mercedes-Benz’ advanced studio in California. In addition to his automotive vocation, Richard is a serial restorer of unique sports cars and a renowned concours judge.

Today, California’s premier motorsports facility, hosts over 320 days of track activity including a quarter-mile championship dragstrip at Auto Club Dragway, full-service karting facilities and various racing schools and experiences. Justin Wilson passed away on August 24th 2015, just four day before these comments were recorded.

At the time, Justin Wilson, 37, had died Monday August 24, 2015, a day after he was struck in the head by a piece of debris during the Verizon IndyCar Series race at Pocono Raceway.

Wilson was hit by debris from the car of rookie Sage Karam, who was leading the ABC Supply 500 when his No. 8 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet spun on its own in Turn 1 on Lap 179 of the 200-lap race Sunday. IndyCar drivers are far more susceptible to head injuries than drivers in stock and sport car racing because the cockpits are open and their helmets exposed.

Wilson is the first driver since Dan Wheldon in 2011 to die in a major U.S.-based auto racing series.

He is survived by wife Julia and daughters Jane, 7, and Jessica, 5.
