A true Texas storyteller, I sat down with Skip Johnson in his office in Norman, OK as he talks baseball, developing young men, hunting, and family.

Widely regarded as one of the premier pitching coaches in the country, Skip Johnson has led the Oklahoma baseball program since June 2017. Since taking over the reins after serving one year as the Sooners’ pitching coach, he has led the Sooners to an 85-52 record in three seasons.

Johnson’s influence on the program began immediately and has progressed each year. The OU pitching staff has posted a progressively lower ERA in each of his three seasons in Norman. Oklahoma’s 3.92 team ERA in 2019 was only the seventh team ERA under 4.00 since 1980, and the first since 2015. In his first two seasons, Sooners pitchers posted two of the top five strikeout totals in program history. A total of 14 pitchers have heard their names called in the Major League Baseball Draft over the last four years.

In the 2020 season shortened due to COVID-19, the Sooners compiled a 14-4 record and climbed as high as No. 9 in the national polls. In the process, OU turned in some historic performances. Dane Acker pitched Oklahoma’s first individual no-hitter since 1989 against No. 11 LSU in the Shriners College Classic, and the pitching staff combined for a Big 12-record 21 strikeouts in one game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Cade Cavalli became OU’s 10th first-round selection in the regular June Major League Baseball Draft when he was selected 22nd overall. A program-record four Sooners were drafted in the first four rounds, including all three pitchers in the weekend rotation (Cavalli, Levi Prater, and Acker).

Johnson coached OU to the program’s 38th NCAA Regional appearance in 2018. The Sooners posted a 38-25 record – the highest win total since 2013 – and reached the finals of the Tallahassee Regional. In the process, Oklahoma pitchers set a school record with 608 strikeouts. Outfielder Steele Walker was named a Second-Team All-American by Baseball America and the NCBWA, and pitcher Levi Prater was selected as a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Outfielder Kyler Murray, who went on to win the 2018 Heisman Trophy with the OU football team, was the ninth overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft. Nine players were drafted, including five in the first 10 rounds (Walker in the second round, pitcher Jake Irvin in the fourth round, pitcher Austin Hansen in the eighth round, and outfielder Cade Harris in the 10th round).

Oklahoma pitchers surrendered the fewest home runs in the Big 12 Conference in 2017 and combined for 531 strikeouts to rank fourth in the league and fourth in OU single-season history. The Sooners’ 9.26 strikeouts per nine innings ranked second in the conference. As a team, OU pitchers struck out 10 or more batters on 24 occasions.

Sooner pitchers combined for 17 starts of six innings or more in 2017, including the first two games of the Louisville Regional. Three Oklahoma pitchers were selected in the 2017 MLB Draft. Sooner closer JB Olson was drafted in the 10th round to extend a string of seven straight years with an Oklahoma player chosen in the first 10 rounds. OU saw starter Devon Perez and reliever Vincenzo Aiello selected on day three of the draft.

Prior to coming to Oklahoma, Johnson spent a 25-year coaching career in the state of Texas, including the most recent 10 years as an assistant and associate head coach at the University of Texas.

Johnson was hired as the pitching coach at Texas for the 2007 season under Augie Garrido, who stepped down from his position as the winningest coach in college baseball in May 2016 to take on new duties in the UT athletics department. In 10 seasons, Johnson helped the Longhorns to seven NCAA Regional appearances, four Super Regionals, and three College World Series appearances.

During his tenure in Austin, 32 Texas pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft, including 14 in the first 10 rounds and three first-round picks. Johnson also oversaw the development of six Longhorn pitchers who have made it to the big leagues. The Texas pitching staff produced a team-earned run average below 3.00 on five occasions and struck out better than 7.5 per nine innings in five of his last eight seasons. As Texas reached its second CWS with Johnson on staff in 2011, his pitchers led the Big 12 in ERA (2.35), batting average against (.198), and strikeouts per nine innings (8.28).

Prior to his time in Austin, Johnson was the head coach for 13 years at Navarro College of the NJCAA’s Texas Eastern Athletic Conference. From 1994 to 2006, he guided the Bulldogs to 13 NJCAA Regionals, nine TEAC championships, and four regional titles while compiling 450 wins.

Johnson has mentored a number of players outside of those he has coached at OU, UT and Navarro, regularly working with three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Homer Bailey of the Kansas Oakland Athletics, and Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles, among others.

A standout baseball player at Denton High School, Johnson began his collegiate playing career at Ranger (Texas) College. After a two-year career there, Johnson moved on to play baseball at the University of North Texas in 1988 before the school dropped its baseball program. He completed his collegiate playing career at UT-Pan American, lettering for the Broncs in 1989 and receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1990. Johnson earned a master’s degree in education from UT-Tyler in 1993.

A native of Denton, Texas, Johnson and his wife, Cathy, have two sons, Tyler and Garrett.

Greg Goff joined Purdue baseball as an assistant coach in July 2017 and was promoted to head coach in June 2019. The 2021 season will be his 16th as a collegiate head coach, including second with the Boilermakers.

Previously a head coach at four universities, Goff succeeded his friend and longtime colleague Mark Wasikowski, who returned to the University of Oregon as the Ducks’ new head coach in June 2019.

Goff has previously served as the head coach at Campbell University (2008-14), Louisiana Tech University (2015-16) and the University of Alabama (2017) as well as Division II University of Montevallo (2004-07). He also helped lead the Boilermakers to a memorable 38-win season in 2018, punctuated by the program's third NCAA Regional bid in program history. Purdue finished second in the Big Ten standings and was also the runner-up at the Big Ten Tournament in Goff’s first year with the program.

Ten players received the Association of Independent Institutions all-conference recognition. Sheetinger collected his first win at GGC with a road triumph against No. 4-ranked Southeastern (Fla.).

The team's 22 straight victories to end the season is the second-longest winning streak in program history. GGC concluded the 2020 season with a 23-2 record.

Senior pitcher Hunter Peck posted a 5-0 record and did not allow an earned run in 38 innings. Freshman reliever Alex Cook recorded nine saves, ranking second in program history.

Sheetinger took over a Georgia Gwinnett College program that’s been consistently ranked among the nation’s top NAIA teams. The Grizzlies have advanced to the semifinal round of the Avista NAIA World Series for the past two seasons, along with another world series appearance in 2014. The 2019 team had a 48-13 record, won the Association of Independent Institutions title, and had five players sign to continue their playing careers as professionals.

He was responsible for organization communications and relationship building within coaches and administrators at NCAA Division II and III, NAIA and junior college levels. He helped facilitate a 200-percent growth rate in ABCA membership and attendance records for three of the organization’s annual conventions.

Sheetinger’s recent outreach efforts were as creator and executive producer of the ABCA’s “The Road Show” and “Extra Innings” video features, where he would interview coaches about a variety of subjects about the game, game-day operations, and program management.

He has served as an associate scout for the Atlanta Braves since 2015.

Coach John Carter is a graduate of Round Rock High School and attended Round Rock schools while growing up. Upon graduation from high school, Coach Carter attended Texas Tech, where he played both football and baseball. After his playing days ended, he remained at Tech as a graduate assistant from 1992 – 1994. He continued his coaching career at Killeen Ellison 1994-1995 coaching football and baseball. He finally returned home and has been at Round Rock since 1995, coaching multiple sports including softball, soccer, football, and baseball.

Former University of Washington assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Donegal Fergus has agreed to terms to become the associate head coach at UC Santa Barbara, head coach Andrew Checketts announced on Monday, June 25, 2018.

Fergus, a former assistant at Seattle University and head coach at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash., joins the UCSB staff after spending the past five seasons at the University of Washington.

"I am excited that Donegal and his family will be joining us," Checketts said. "Donegal has a reputation as a relationship builder and is a proven winner with a pedigree of success. He will bring energy and experience with him and I look forward to working together to get the Gauchos back to the postseason and beyond".

Upon Fergus' arrival to Washington following the 2013 season, the Huskies enjoyed one of their most successful stretches in program history. In 2014, Fergus' first season as hitting coach, Washington snapped a 10-year postseason drought after going 41-17 and advancing to the NCAA Regionals. The Huskies also achieved their highest ranking in team history, reaching the No. 5 spot in the Baseball America, Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball Poll.

Washington proceeded to advance to three NCAA tournaments in five seasons with Fergus on staff, including an appearance in the College World Series in 2018 after the Huskies won their first ever Super Regional.

"My family and I could not be more excited to join the Gaucho family," Fergus said. "Coach Checketts and his family could not be more welcoming to my clan. I'm fired up by the opportunity to be at a place that combines incredible educational opportunities with progressive player development. Coach Checketts has shown that he can recruit and grow players as well as anyone in the country and I am honored to be a part of that and I can't wait to get started!"

Fergus' recruiting talents have shined through during his tenure as Washington committed the fewest errors in program history in 2017, recording the third-best fielding percentage (.982) in the nation. Furthermore, the Huskies have had more All-Pac-12 position players honored over the past five seasons than any other five-year stretch in program history.

In 2016, Fergus assembled the top recruiting class in Washington history after being ranked No. 10 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 9 by Perfect Game. His 2015 recruiting class came in at No. 15 by Baseball America. His eye for talent also translates at the next level as Washington has had 26 players selected in the Major League Baseball draft since Fergus' arrival, including a school record eight selections in 2014.

As a head coach at Lower Columbia College in 2013, Fergus led the Red Devils to a 34-14 record and a trip to the West Region playoffs. He also served as an assistant at Lower Columbia where he helped guide the team to four division titles, a NWAACC championship and a 2005 recruiting class that had seven players selected in the MLB draft.

Graduated from Bishop Feehan in 1997 on a team that went 20-2 his senior year and won the EAC Conference. Mark was a pitcher during that time, and continued on at Salve Regina University playing 4 years and during his senior year won the Conference Championship and competed in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

After playing, he went into coaching at different levels, through the Pawtucket RBI Program, bringing his teams to the World Championships in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Mark has also been affiliated with American Legion baseball in Cumberland, RI and High School baseball at the Wheeler School in Providence, RI and at Bishop Feehan HS in Attleboro, MA.

He was named the Head Coach of the Coastal team for the prestigious Bay State Games in Massachusetts in 2014. He has coached over 45 players that have moved onto the collegiate level and 4 players that have played professionally in his 13 years of coaching.

Graduated from Bishop Feehan in 1997 on a team that went 20-2 his senior year and won the EAC Conference. Mark was a pitcher during that time, and continued on at Salve Regina University playing 4 years and during his senior year won the Conference Championship and competed in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

After playing, he went into coaching at different levels, through the Pawtucket RBI Program, bringing his teams to the World Championships in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Mark has also been affiliated with American Legion baseball in Cumberland, RI and High School baseball at the Wheeler School in Providence, RI and at Bishop Feehan HS in Attleboro, MA.

Among the most highly respected coaches and recruiters in college baseball, Mitch Thompson is in his fifth year as head coach at McLennan Community College. His coaching career spans three decades and includes 23 years coaching at the NCAA Division 1 level including 22 years in the Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences.

Thompson was named MCC head coach prior to the 2014 season and immediately began rebuilding the program to prominence. In four seasons under Thompson’s leadership, the Highlanders have amassed a 170-72 record, including an 87-41 conference mark, and have made four consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since the 1990s.

The Highlanders finished 32-27 in Thompson’s initial season and earned a Region V bid for the first time in four years. MCC finished the season as the Region V Tournament runner-up after posting a 17-15 mark in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC).

In 2015, Thompson guided MCC to its first Region V championship and JUCO World Series appearance in 32 years with a 41-20 overall record. The Highlanders were 19-11 in conference play. Thompson was rewarded for his efforts by being named Region V Coach of the Year as well as Waco Tribune-Herald Sportsman of the Year.

Thompson’s 2015 squad posted a .327 team batting average and averaged more than seven runs per game. The season included a pair of six-game winning streaks and a stretch in which MCC won 24 of 31 games. At the JUCO World Series, the Highlanders won three straight elimination games before falling to Northwest Florida State College in the national championship game. MCC showed great toughness down the stretch going 9-3 in the postseason and winning six elimination games on their way to the national runner-up finish.

The Highlanders’ success continued in 2016, going 45-12 overall and 25-7 in conference play to claim the NTJCAC title and earn Thompson the Coach of the Year honor. MCC won 13 of its final 14 regular-season games, including a nine-game winning streak. The Highlanders finished the season ranked # 11 in the nation and again were potent at the plate notching a .342 team batting average with 80 home runs and averaging 8.9 runs per game. Thompson’s squad was nearly unbeatable at home, going 24-3 at Bosque River Ballpark.

2017 was an incredible season for the Highlanders. The team was ranked 16th in the NJCAA Division I Preseason Poll and climbed the poll throughout the season, spending a week at No. 1. The Highlanders recorded a 26-6 conference mark, including going undefeated in April, to claim a second consecutive conference championship, McLennan’s first back to back conference titles in over 20 years. Thompson was once again named the Coach of the Year. Success continued in the postseason as well. The squad went 6-1 in the Region V Tournament to claim another regional title and secure a return trip to the JUCO World Series. The Highlanders went 1-2 in Grand Junction, finishing in fifth place and ending the season with an overall record of 52-13. The team’s 52 wins was the second most of any Division 1 team in the country.

Through Thompson’s four seasons at MCC, 21 players have earned all-conference honors, and 53 student-athletes have advanced to play with four-year programs, including 42 with Division I programs and 16 with Power 5 conference schools. Eleven of Thompson’s players have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, and a 12th signed as a free agent.

Thompson’s MCC squads also have excelled in the classroom as the program has posted a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.0 in eight consecutive semesters. His teams earned NJCAA All-Academic Team Honorable Mention honors in 2015 (3.13 GPA), 2016 (3.19 GPA), and 2017 (3.41 GPA) 40 players have earned NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards. The 2017 teams 3.41 GPA was the third best GPA in the nation.

Prior to being named McLennan head coach, Thompson spent one season as the South Texas area scouting supervisor for the Kansas City Royals organization. During that year, Thompson drafted the 1st-, 3rd-, 9th-, 13th- and 20th-round picks for Kansas City. The Royals spent nearly $3 million signing his players.

Thompson is no stranger to baseball in Central Texas, having spent nearly two decades on staff at Baylor University (1995-2012) where he was the Bears’ hitting instructor and primary recruiter. He guided Baylor to the most prolific period of offensive production in program history as numerous program records were established during his tenure. Thompson was promoted to assistant head coach prior to the 2009 season.

In his 18 seasons at Baylor, Thompson helped lead the Bears to three Big 12 Conference titles, 12 NCAA Regional appearances, three Super Regional appearances and the 2005 College World Series. Those teams included four Big 12 Players of the Year, as well as 1999 consensus National Player of the Year and Golden Spikes Award winner Jason Jennings.

Thompson recruited all but one player who signed with Baylor during his tenure on the Bears’ staff, 72 of which were drafted by or signed free agent contracts with Major League organizations. This list includes several high-round draft picks, most notably first-round selections Kip Wells (Chicago White Sox, 1998), Jennings (Colorado Rockies, 1999), Chad Hawkins (Texas Rangers, 2000), David Murphy (Boston Red Sox, 2003), Mark McCormick (St. Louis Cardinals, 2005) and Aaron Miller (Los Angeles Dodgers, 2009), as well as 2001 Johnny Bench Award winner and Red Sox second-round pick Kelly Shoppach.

Nine players Thompson recruited who signed with Baylor eventually played in the Major Leagues. His recruiting classes were ranked among the nation’s 25 best six times, including a No. 1 ranking in 2005 that led to Thompson being named the 2006 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) National Assistant Coach of the Year.

Thompson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for legendary coach Ron Polk at Mississippi State for the 1990 season. The 1990 Bulldogs were 50-21 and reached the College World Series after upsetting second-ranked Florida State in the NCAA South II Regional. Thompson spent the 1991 season at Radford (Virginia) University before returning to Mississippi State for the 1992 and 1993 seasons as assistant coach and director of baseball operations.

In 1994, Thompson was an assistant coach at Auburn University, helping the Tigers garner 44 wins and a College World Series appearance. He worked with catchers and outfielders and was the team’s defensive coordinator.

Thompson is a 1988 honors graduate of Fort Hays State in Kansas where he twice earned academic all-conference honors in baseball and served as team captain as a senior. He began his collegiate career at Cloud County Community College before spending a year at Bacone College before transferring to Fort Hays State. Thompson toured Europe in the summer of 1987 with Athletes in Action, the athletic ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. He earned a master’s degree in physical education from Mississippi State in 1991.

In 1998, Thompson produced an instructional video titled “Contact Hitting and Plate Coverage” with Championship Books and Videos. The following year, he and Championship Books and Videos co-produced a six-video series designed to help youth league baseball coaches.

In 1997 Gary formed the team Da’Bomb in Arlington, Texas. Little did he know that forming that team would change his life forever.

By 2000 Da’ Bomb won their first Texas USSSA state Championship in the 14U age group. Da’Bomb repeated the feat by winning the 15U Texas State Championship in 2001. Da'Bomb ended the 2000 season with a 4th place in the USSSA National Championships.

That same year he formed the Arlington Girl's Fastpitch League with 5 teams. His goal was to give more girls the opportunity to play fastpitch.

In 2000 Gary created the website SoftballJunk.com. It was the first site on the Internet to exclusively sell girl's fastpitch softball equipment. Until SoftballJunk.com, players either bought online from slowpitch websites or baseball websites.

The website was an overnight success. Due to demand for equipment, Gary opened a retail store for SoftballJunk in Arlington, Texas. Gary still runs and operate the store. SoftballJunk.com has grown into a network of 40 plus websites that cater to fastpitch softball.

In 2004 Gary was one of the first 100 Podcasters on the planet, creating the Fastpitch Radio Show which was the first podcast devoted to fastpitch softball.

2005 marked a new role in coaching for Gary when he volunteered as the head coach for Academy High School in Texas. This was the first year for softball at the school, and Gary stepped up to help.

In 2006 Gary moved forward to the new technology of Video Podcasting where he created the popular Fastpitch TV Show which has been viewed over 5 million times.

In 2012 Gary started publishing the Fastpitch Magazine. It was the first softball magazine made exclusively for the iPhone and iPad.

Gary has been a regular on the field, and in the press box of the WCWS for the last 6 years conducting interviews and shooting photography. His staff has been proudly producing more content from the event than anyone, except ESPN.

In 2014 Gary became an Associate with USSSA when he became the Texas State Director. The next year he became the USSSA National Director of Social Media.

Gary just published his 12th e-book, and his 5th paperback about the sport of fastpitch. Primarily the books focus on skills and information for players and coaches.

That same year he formed the Arlington Girl's Fastpitch League with 5 teams. His goal was to give more girls the opportunity to play fastpitch.

In 2000 Gary created the website SoftballJunk.com. It was the first site on the Internet to exclusively sell girl's fastpitch softball equipment. Until SoftballJunk.com, players either bought online from slowpitch websites or baseball websites.

The website was an overnight success. Due to demand for equipment, Gary opened a retail store for SoftballJunk in Arlington, Texas. Gary still runs and operate the store. SoftballJunk.com has grown into a network of 40 plus websites that cater to fastpitch softball.

In 2004 Gary was one of the first 100 Podcasters on the planet, creating the Fastpitch Radio Show which was the first podcast devoted to fastpitch softball.

2005 marked a new role in coaching for Gary when he volunteered as the head coach for Academy High School in Texas. This was the first year for softball at the school, and Gary stepped up to help.

In 2006 Gary moved forward to the new technology of Video Podcasting where he created the popular Fastpitch TV Show which has been viewed over 5 million times.

In 2012 Gary started publishing the Fastpitch Magazine. It was the first softball magazine made exclusively for the iPhone and iPad.

Gary has been a regular on the field, and in the press box of the WCWS for the last 6 years conducting interviews and shooting photography. His staff has been proudly producing more content from the event than anyone, except ESPN.

In 2014 Gary became an Associate with USSSA when he became the Texas State Director. The next year he became the USSSA National Director of Social Media.

Gary just published his 12th e-book, and his 5th paperback about the sport of fastpitch. Primarily the books focus on skills and information for players and coaches.

In 2016 Gary was inducted into the Academy Of Podcasters Hall Of Fame because of his early successful endeavors in podcasting.
