The event was sponsored by El Da' Sheon Nix and Stephen Moore. Although Freeway Rick was illiterate and chose to deal drugs in Los Angeles at the age of 19 and gained notoriety for heading an empire during the crack epidemic that netted more than $1 million a day, he eventually served 20 years in prison and earned his freedom by learning to read, study, and think critically while incarcerated. Ross was at the center of a national controversy that questioned CIA complicity in allowing drugs to be sold in South Central Los Angeles that eventually led to the crack epidemic throughout America in the mid- to late 1980's.
