For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8

Hello again and welcome to episode three of The Insurgency Podcast. Our mission, as always, is to raise up an army of believers able at all times to explain the high degree of reasonableness of a life dedicated to Jesus Christ. I’m Joey Ploof, your host, and the executive director of Insurgent Apologetic Ministries.
What if I told you that we can make the internet, places like Facebook and Reddit, just as hospitable for sharing Jesus Christ as your church?
Today I want to talk to you about five principles that will allow you to start and carry on christ centered online discussions.
If you’re like me you’re probably surrounded by well meaning people who tell you that there is no profit in discussing faith, politics, and other controversial subjects online. For now it may be avoidable, but the time is coming when the internet will be so pervasive in our lives that it will be unavoidable. Not to mention the reach and scope of the online audience that is available even today through facebook, twitter, reddit, etc. And if these topics are as vitally important as we know they are why should we allow any venue to be off limits?
I think it would be a huge mistake to cede this area to unbelievers. Psalm 24 tells us, “The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein”. If this is true, and we know it is, then the Internet is part of the Lord's domain. We should act like it. It would be better to learn to conduct ourselves in godly form sooner rather than later.
With that said principle number one is…

Remain Calm

“Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.” Proverbs 16:32

The whole intent here is to remove as much emotion from the discussion as possible. I'm not asking you to remove the emotion from your heart. That would be ridiculous and impossible.
The emotion in your heart is likely what spurred you to engage in dialogue in the first place. But the thing to remember is that the emotional tone of the exchange is always either escalating or de-escalating based on the emotions everyone brings in at any given time. Set the tone by always de-escalating.
2. Ask Questions
“A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,
but only in expressing his opinion.
When wickedness comes, contempt comes also,
and with dishonor comes disgrace.” Proverbs 18:2-3

“A fool's lips walk into a fight,

<itunes:author>Joey Ploof</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection,...</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.
