MOTHER'S GIFT by Doris Jenkins (1965)

ALWAYS A SONG IN HER HEART — A medley of songs done extemporaneously by my mother, Doris Jenkins, in 1965. (You'll especially enjoy Alice Blue Gown!) Here's how this happened: It was Feb. 13, 1965. I was an 18-year-old senior at Istrouma High School. It was a Saturday, and I had just gotten off work at WLCS where I did news and had an all-day radio show. I had purchased a beautiful reel-to-reel Wollensak tape recorder and had it with me. I walked into our house at 3326 Conrad Drive (right off Winbourne Avenue in North Baton Rouge) and heard her singing. I walked in the kitchen and found her singing in front of the sink. She was washing dishes and looking out the window. I hugged her, set up the tape recorder on the kitchen table, and said "Mama, sing something for me!" She didn't hesitate a moment but sat down at the table and started singing! However, the audio level was too low. So I interrupted her and set the audio level. Then l left the room. She had no warning and no notes. It was all extemporaneous. She simply sang songs that were already in her heart -- Goody, Goody; Alice Blue Gown; Ol' Man River; Make Believe; Me and My Shadow; Moonlight and Roses; Row Row Row Your Boat; Has Anybody Seen My Gal; and a bit of I Wonder What's Become of Sally — before the tape ran out. After she made the tape, she wouldn't give it to me. She said it was no good and that she wanted to do it over again. She never did, and I never saw the tape again until early this morning, Jan. 24, 2017. Mama passed away three years ago, and I found the tape when I was going through some of her things — 52 years after it was made! You can imagine my surprise at finding it and how much it means to me! Mama had no voice training but she loved to sing! Over the years, she sometimes sang in her church choir, although I never remember her being asked to sing solo. Mama was born March 4, 1922, in Houston and died at age 91 on Nov. 17, 2013, in Baton Rouge. She was married to the love of her life, my dad Ory Jenkins, for 34 years until his death on May 3, 1980. She said just before her death, "I miss him everyday!" My mama was certainly not a professional singer but she always had a song in her heart!
Note: Both Mama's voice and mine were actually bit deeper than the tape indicates. But I cannot correct them with the equipment I have.

Margaret Savoye
Liz Jenkins
Catherine Jenkins Newsome
Anita D. It was believed to be the first steamboat race on the river since the duel between the Robert E. Lee and the Natchez in 1870. BOB FURLOW narrated this event, which was broadcast live on WLCS 910 AM from the Thunderbird, a cruiser from Bonfani's Marine (5163 Greenwell Springs Road at the time), which traveled along near the two steamboats. The Jubilee One was larger and faster. So, in order to even up the competition, the Jubilee One carried 225 passengers, while the Golden Arrow carried only 30. The boats left from the Capital Marine Supply docks at the foot of North Boulevard. They traveled north past the State Times building, the Capital Lakes, the State Capitol, and Our Lady of the Lake Hospital on their way to the Old Mississippi River Bridge, where they turned and raced back to the starting line. Thousands of people lined the banks of both sides of the river and cheered on the Jubilee One. The paddle wheels churned as the boats fought for the lead. Once, the boats nearly disappeared in the fog. On board the Thunderbird were Captain Bob Howard, Bonfani's owner Dominick Bonfani, and WLCS newsmen Ken Fletcher Booth and Bill Cox, who handled the technical side of the broadcast. Mayor-President Woody Dumas waved the victory sign as the Jubilee One crossed the finish line and narrowly won the race! A cheer went up on both sides of the river! It was exciting radio and a once-in-a-lifetime experience! I was at WLCS studios during the broadcast, making sure it went out successfully over the airwaves. I made a copy of the tape and saved it for posterity. Until today, I haven't listened to the tape nor has anyone else for 52 years!

<itunes:author>Woody Jenkins</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>STEAMBOAT RACE ON MISSISSIPPI — This is the best example I know of great local radio — the historic steamboat race in February 1965 between the Jubilee One of Baton Rouge and the Golden Arrow of St. Louis.
