(For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?" He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,<br />'This people honors me with their lips,<br />but their hearts are far from me;<br />in vain do they worship me,<br />teaching human precepts as doctrines.'<br />You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."<br /><br />Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile. power,” he said,<br />“whoever comes out of the doors of my house<br />to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites<br />shall belong to the LORD.<br />I shall offer him up as a burnt offering.”<br /><br />Jephthah then went on to the Ammonites to fight against them,<br />and the LORD delivered them into his power,<br />so that he inflicted a severe defeat on them,<br />from Aroer to the approach of Minnith (twenty cities in all)<br />and as far as Abel-keramim.<br />Thus were the Ammonites brought into subjection<br />by the children of Israel.<br />When Jephthah returned to his house in Mizpah,<br />it was his daughter who came forth,<br />playing the tambourines and dancing.<br />She was an only child: he had neither son nor daughter besides her.<br />When he saw her, Therefore it is said,<br /><br />"When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive;<br />    he gave gifts to his people." <br /><br />(When it says, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people's trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming.
