I'tikaf is to be done according to the sunnah and sharia. I'tikaf is not to deal business while in the masjid.
3) Ustaz mentioned conditions of i'tikaf. I'tikaf is a sunnah and not wajib or fard al-kifayah. Some of the scholars have called i'tikaf makrooh but this is rejected. Ustaz gives detailed explanation.
4) Rasoolillaah صلى الله عليه وسلم used to do i'tikaf in Ramadaan and outside of Ramadaan.
5) Previous nations (before rasoolillaah صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to fast and do i'tikaf. Ustaz provided explanation with proofs.
6) It is sunnah for men and women to perform i'tikaf. Men and women are allowed to do i'tikaf in masjid. Ustaz quotes hadith from Sahih al Bukhari and Muslim. Some of the scholars did mentioned that for women to perform i'tikaf is makrooh but this position seems to be incorrect.
7) Hikmah of i'tikaf. Ustaz quotes from Shaykh Saleh al-Fawzaan (حفظهم الله).
8) I'tikaf is to detach oneself from the creation and completely devote to the Creator. And it is also to completely detach oneself from the wordly matters and perform dhikir, recite Quran and other types of ibadaat. If someone can not do this then this is not i'tikaf rather, this is just to spend some time in the masjid for a while.
9) During I'tikaf a person does not go outside of the masjid except for extreme necessity.
10) Although there are various opinion related to duration of i'tikaf but majority of scholars have mentioned that the i'tikaf is atleast one day and a night. One enters into the masjid after the 20th of Ramadaan slightly before sun sets (night of 21 Ramadaan); they use the hadith from Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri رضي الله عنه and those who holds the opinion that one enters the masjid after fajr salah during the 21st of Ramadaan use the Hadith of Aa'isha رضي الله عنها . Ustaz provided a detailed explanation between the two ahadeeth.
11) The person performing i'tikaf can leave the masjid (after the sunset) as soon as the moon has sighted for 'Eid al Fitr (after the sunset). But it is better for the person to remain in the masjid the night and leave after 'Eid Salah.
12) Ustaz حفظه الله answers the question that was about a speaker in Dhaka who has prescribed to the Muslims that the person who wishes to observe I’tikaf should start from the end of the 19th Ramadan that is with the beginning of the 20th night of Ramadan so that if the month ends with 29 days, the person gets full "last 10 nights".

Questions that were asked after the lecture:
1) Shaykh Naasir-ud-Deen al-Albaani (رحمهم الله) commented on i'tikaaf and the ahadeeth pertaining to in his book, "Qiyyamu Ramadaan." The easy way to translate the known hadith is, "there is no i'tikaf except in 3 masajid." Shaykh al-Albaani declared the narration to be sahih although other scholars have declared it to be weak. The majority of the scholars hold the opinion that it is permissible to make i'tikaf in other masajid besides the three masajid (Masjid al-Haram (in Makkah), the Prophet's Mosque (in Madinah), or in the Aqsa Mosque (in Jerusalem)). If the hadith is sahih, should we not return ot it? What is your direction (opinion) related to this matter?
2) Ya Ustaadh: The question is regarding I’tikaf. We know from many ahadeeth that the time of I’tikaf is during the last 10 nights of Ramadan. A speaker in Dhaka has prescribed to the Muslims here that the person who wishes to observe I’tikaf should start from the end of the 19th Ramadan. Now Muslims here have become confused about this fatawa as it is something new to them. They are also confused because the odd nights for them will be even nights for others and vice versa, so in which nights should they seek Lailatul Qadr and also that if the month ends with 30 days then they will be observing I’tikaf for 11 nights.
3) Please advice us on this fatawa and what is the correct Sunnah reagarding I’tikaf in the last 10 nights of Ramadan; What is the correct manner of seeking Lailatul Qadr in the month of Ramadan.
4) What is the manner in performing i'tikaf according to the sunnah?
5) How would the women perform i'tikaf? Can they perform i'tikaf at home? In other words, is this according to Shari'ah?
6) While performing i'tikaf, can someone discuss matters related to business?
7) During i'tikaf, can someone read books related to religious knowledge?
8) I have heard you can only perform i'tikaf in masjid al-Haram and masjid an-Nabawi. Is it not allowed to do it in any other other masjid on Earth? I do not know what is the truth.
9) is it permissible to perform i'tikaf where jumu'ah is not established? What are the conditions for a masjid for i'tikaf to be performed there?

<itunes:author>EDSRadio</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Lecture date: Sunday, 18th Ramadaan 1436 AH (5th July, 2015).
