The story of Israel is a layered, contested epic that stretches from the Bronze Age Canaanites to the modern state's wars and peace processes. Lucas and Luna guide listeners through the biblical narratives of Abraham, Moses, and David, the rise and fall of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, and the Babylonian exile that reshaped Jewish identity. They explore the Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman periods—including the Maccabean revolt, Herod's Temple, and the Jewish-Roman wars that led to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE. The podcast then traces the long diaspora, Byzantine and early Islamic rule, the Crusader kingdoms, and Ottoman control over Palestine. In the modern era, they cover the rise of Zionism, the British Mandate, the 1948 War of Independence, the Six-Day War in 1967, the Oslo Accords, and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Each episode examines core debates: how archaeological evidence aligns with biblical accounts, the impact of the Balfour Declaration, the ethics of settlements, and the meaning of Jerusalem as both a holy city and a flashpoint. Lucas and Luna bring their distinct perspectives—one trained in archaeology, the other in political history—to make sense of how a small piece of land became the crucible of three world religions and a century of strife. This is a story of exile and return, faith and nationalism, memory and myth.
