Secondary gain is often unconscious and the patient is unaware that they are capitalising on the benefits of having a problem. If it is a benefit that the patient is aware of (and deliberately fabricating or creating in order to benefit) this is known as malingering.Â
Secondary gain is very difficult (especially for those using NLP) to identify but if you have some strong suspicions here are some strategies to help deal with it.Â

Are there any firm rules on how to do the right thing? Does it come down to considering the ecology of a situation and continuing to do right even if it feels wrong?
Perhaps deciding what is right comes from thinking forwards to explore the longer-term ramifications of a decision. But is there always a black and white solution to help you choose the right way forward.
Psychology would show us that the best indicator about how a person might act in the future is to look at their past behaviours. In considering what the right thing is for someone else, we can at least consider other similar scenarios and use those as a guide as to what the consequences may be.

Sometimes it’s difficult to shake off the feeling that it’s about you - even when you logically know it’s not! Today we’re going to explore some strategies to help you when you’ve taken something to heart and need to move on.Â
In addition, it’s worth exploring why something has affected you - maybe because at some level you know it is true. But maybe it’s not truly about you and in fact, about the other person.Â
In order to maintain your worth you need to have high self-esteem, self-worth, self-confidence etc. Developing a thick skin and being able to dust yourself off requires all those important ‘selfs’ to be in good conditionÂ
