From the Canaanites to the Oslo Accords, the history of Palestine is a tapestry of empires, faiths, and contested identities. Lucas and Luna guide listeners through millennia of struggle over this small but world-changing strip of land. Explore the Bronze Age city-states of Canaan, the rise of the Hebrew kingdoms under David and Solomon, and the successive waves of conquest by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Mamluks, and Ottomans. Delve into the birth of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in this sacred geography, the construction and destruction of the Second Temple, the Crusader capture of Jerusalem in 1099, and the Mamluk victory at Hattin. Trace the Ottoman centuries, the emergence of Palestinian national identity under the British Mandate, and the pivotal 1917 Balfour Declaration. Witness the 1948 Nakba, the 1967 Six-Day War, the rise of the PLO, the Intifadas, and the stalled peace process. Through specific treaties like the Sykes-Picot Agreement and the Camp David Accords, and figures from Saladin to Yasser Arafat, the show examines the human cost of a conflict that remains a global flashpoint. This is not a polemic but a deep historical inquiry into how land becomes sacred, how memory resists erasure, and why the past refuses to stay buried.

13 MAY 2026 · In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the 1922 Palestine Order in Council, the foundational legal instrument through which Britain administered its League of Nations mandate. They discuss its creation in the wake of the San Remo Resolution and the Balfour Declaration, its establishment of a High Commissioner with sweeping powers, and its definition of Palestinian citizenship—one that included both Arab and Jewish inhabitants but excluded many Palestinian diaspora. The conversation covers the role of Sir Herbert Samuel, the first High Commissioner; the creation of the Palestine Legislative Council that never functioned; and the legal framework that allowed land transfers and Zionist immigration to continue under British protection. Lucas explains how the Order embedded the Balfour Declaration into law, and how it shaped Palestinian resistance and legal appeals to the Privy Council. They touch on the 1923 Transjordan Memorandum, which separated Transjordan from Palestine's jurisdiction, and the 1925 Citizenship Order that determined who was a Palestinian. This episode reveals how colonial legalism laid the groundwork for decades of conflict, and why the Order in Council remains a reference point in debates about self-determination and sovereignty.

12 MAY 2026 · In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the pivotal 1948 Battle of Latrun, a series of brutal clashes between the newly formed Israeli Defense Forces and the Arab Legion of Transjordan. They delve into the strategic importance of the Latrun police fortress, which controlled the main road to Jerusalem, and how repeated Israeli assaults failed to capture it. The episode examines the leadership of Yigal Allon and the tactical decisions that led to heavy casualties, as well as the construction of the 'Burma Road' as an alternative route to supply besieged Jerusalem. They discuss the long-term consequences: the division of Jerusalem, the strengthening of King Abdullah's position, and the creation of the Latrun salient, which remained under Jordanian control until 1967. Listeners will learn about the human cost, the strategic blunders, and how this battle cemented the legacy of the Arab Legion and shaped the borders of the emerging state of Israel.

11 MAY 2026 · In 1919, as World War I ended, Palestinian Arab leaders traveled to Paris to present their case for independence and self-determination at the Paris Peace Conference. The episode follows the Palestine Arab Congress delegation—led by Musa al-Husseini and joined by Aref al-Aref and Izzat Darwaza—as they submitted a detailed memorandum to the Allied powers. They argued for a united, independent Syria including Palestine, rooted in Wilsonian principles and historical Arab majority. But Britain and France had already carved up the region via the Sykes-Picot Agreement and the Balfour Declaration, and President Woodrow Wilson's proposed commission of inquiry (the King-Crane Commission) was delayed and ultimately sidelined. The episode explores the stark contrast between Arab expectations and imperial realities, the role of Faisal ibn Hussein at the conference, and the secret diplomacy that doomed Palestinian hopes. It shows how the failure of Paris set the stage for the coming conflict over Palestine, as the promise of self-determination gave way to mandates, colonization, and the Nakba.

11 MAY 2026 · In 1929, long-simmering tensions over Jewish immigration and the sacred sites of Jerusalem erupted into a week of violence that reshaped Palestine. This episode explores the immediate spark: a dispute over a screen at the Western Wall. Lucas and Luna trace the chain of events from the Yom Kippur incident of 1928 through the August 1929 riots, examining the role of Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini, the British mandatory authorities, and the emerging Zionist leadership. They discuss the massacres in Hebron and Safed, the establishment of the Shaw Commission, and the lasting impact on Jewish-Arab relations. Along the way, they consider the interplay of religious fervor, nationalist politics, and British indecision that turned a prayer-screen into a symbol of irreconcilable conflict. This episode offers a nuanced look at a pivotal moment that foreshadowed decades of struggle.

10 MAY 2026 · In this episode of The History of Palestine, Lucas and Luna explore the surprising story of the Jaffa orange, a fruit that became a symbol of Palestinian identity, economic resilience, and the conflict itself. From its origins in the late 19th century to its role in the Nakba and beyond, the Jaffa orange—known locally as ‘burtuqal’—traveled across the globe, building the economy of Palestine and later being rebranded as an Israeli export. Lucas traces the rise of the orange groves around Jaffa, the key Arab and Jewish citrus families like the Dajani and the Rokach, and how the fruit’s golden era ended with the 1948 war. The episode also touches on the modern revival of Palestinian citrus farming and the bittersweet taste of a fruit that carries a homeland’s memory.

10 MAY 2026 · This episode dives into the 1858 Ottoman Land Code, a seemingly bureaucratic reform that reshaped Palestine's rural landscape and sowed seeds of dispossession. Lucas and Luna explore how the code's requirement for land registration clashed with traditional communal ownership, leading wealthy urban elites and foreign investors to accumulate vast estates while peasant farmers (fellahin) lost their ancestral plots. They discuss figures like the Surrock family, who bought land from the Ottoman sultan, and the role of the Jewish National Fund in later land purchases. The episode touches on the 1858 law's unintended consequences—creating absentee landlordism, fueling debt among fellahin, and setting the stage for the Zionist land acquisition that would intensify during the British Mandate. It contrasts the Ottoman system of 'miri' (state-owned) land with European notions of private property, and explains how legal loopholes like 'mahlul' (unclaimed land) were exploited. The conversation also examines the 1875 Law of Immatriculation and the rise of the 'effendi' class, providing a nuanced look at how Ottoman reforms inadvertently accelerated the transformation of Palestine's agrarian society.

9 MAY 2026 · In late 1947, as the British Mandate crumbled, Jewish Jerusalem came under siege by Arab forces. This episode follows the desperate convoys that tried to supply the city—trucks armored with steel plates, driven by volunteers who called themselves the Convoy of the Brave. We look at the battle for Sha'ar HaGai (Bab al-Wad), the burial of the dead in the Sanhedria cemetery, and the secret water pipeline built under the noses of the Arab Legion. Lucas recounts the stories of drivers like Mickey Marcus and the women who loaded supplies under sniper fire, and explains how the siege shaped the city's partition and the trauma that still echoes today. We also discuss the controversy: Did the Haganah prioritize military objectives over civilian relief? And what did the surrender of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City mean for the new state's identity?

9 MAY 2026 · In July 1948, during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the Israeli army captured the Palestinian towns of Lydda and Ramle. Over the course of a few days, some 50,000 to 70,000 Palestinian civilians were expelled from their homes. This episode examines the events surrounding the expulsions, the orders given by Israeli commanders Yigal Allon and David Ben-Gurion, the role of Operation Dani, and the controversy over whether the expulsions constituted ethnic cleansing. We discuss the eyewitness accounts, the historiographical debate between 'new historians' like Benny Morris and traditional Israeli narratives, and the long-term impact on the Palestinian refugee crisis. The episode also touches on the killing of civilians in the Lydda mosque and the decision to deny the refugees the right to return, a policy that set a precedent for the Nakba.

8 MAY 2026 · In 634 CE, just two years after the Prophet Muhammad's death, a newly unified Arab army under Khalid ibn al-Walid met a massive Byzantine force at Ajnadayn, a village southwest of Jerusalem. This episode unpacks the battle that cracked open Roman rule in Syria and Palestine, setting the stage for centuries of Islamic governance. We explore Khalid's legendary desert march, the strategic genius of his feigned retreat, and the catastrophic Byzantine defeat that left Jerusalem vulnerable. We also examine the aftermath: the surrender of Damascus, the Siege of Jerusalem under Caliph Umar, and the first Islamic governance structures in Palestine—including the establishment of Jund Filastin and the early policies toward Christians and Jews. Drawing on early Islamic sources like al-Waqidi and Baladhuri, as well as Byzantine chronicles, Lucas and Luna discuss why Ajnadayn is often overshadowed by later battles like Yarmouk, yet remains the decisive moment that ended Sassanid-Byzantine exhaustion and inaugurated a new era. The episode also touches on the legacy of this victory in Palestinian collective memory, linking it to later resistances against Crusaders and modern struggles. A fresh angle on the deep history of a land where empires clash and faiths converge.
