Just across the border into Iowa lies Gitchi Manitou State Preserve, a stretch of woods with a dark reputation. Many Sioux Falls locals know the stories—and the warnings. Hikers have long reported feeling watched, hearing low growls, and seeing misty forms drifting between the trees. Some tell of sudden, freezing cold spots, or the sound of drums echoing faintly through the night. The preserve has been a quarry, it's been a state park... at one time it held a different purpose as it’s home to Native American burial grounds. However, Gitchi Manitou State Preserve is mostly known for an awful quadruple homicide that happened in 1973. This violent crime claimed four young lives here, leaving behind grief and fear that linger still. Some believe the haunting energy stems from that event. Others point to much older spirits, tied to the land’s sacred history. Whatever the cause, few venture into Gitchi Manitou after dark. The silence feels heavy. The site is famous for the tale of outlaw Jesse James, who supposedly leapt across it on horseback to escape a posse chasing him down after a bank robbery in Minnesota. That may be the most famous story from the Devil's Gulch, but locals whisper about other, stranger tales. Hikers have reported hearing ghostly cries echoing off the stone walls. Some speak of a woman in white, appearing near the bridge, only to vanish into the mist. Others describe the feeling of being followed through the canyon, footsteps crunching just behind them—though no one is there. Legends tie the beautiful gulch to lost lovers, tragic falls, and ancient spirits tied to the land itself. The Washington Pavilion is known today as a hub for science, art, and performance. But tucked inside is a story of something… less educational. The haunted elevator. Several employees have told of stepping inside and feeling an icy chill, as though someone invisible rode with them. Doors open on floors no one selected. Lights flicker. In the reflection of the elevator doors, some say they’ve seen an unfamiliar face—smiling faintly—only to turn and find themselves alone. One rumor speaks of a man who died in the building years before its renovation into the Washington Pavilion... back then this building was Washington High School. Another story suggests residual energy from the many lives connected to the space. Most riders find nothing unusual. But if you find yourself in the Washington Pavilion elevator and feel a sudden chill, you might have an extra passenger, just along for the ride! In the heart of Sioux Falls, whispers persist about a church said to be haunted. According to the historical marker at the location of Calvary Cathedral, Bishop William Hobart Hare's remains are buried on the North side of the Cathedral. His body was moved there from the Southwest side of the building where the addition was built. Some unexplained power issues and other experiences in this church have people whispering stories from the beyond. The ghost of a Native American sitting at the desk of one of the pastors. Incessant pounding on the inside of a locked door. When a key was finally located, the room was found to be empty. Late at night, passersby claim to hear the sound of a choir inside, though the building is dark and locked. Shadows have been seen moving behind stained glass windows, and a few visitors have reported the smell of incense where none was burning. One account tells of a pastor working late, who felt someone tap his shoulder. When he turned, the pews were empty. Another recalls organ keys pressed down by invisible hands, holding a single low note until the pastor fled. Is it the spirits of devoted worshippers, returning to the place they loved? The barn remains a testament to the region's agricultural history and is a popular spot for photography. Built in 1919, its circular design is striking, but locals say it may hold more than farm animals. Over the years, visitors have reported strange activity inside. Tools moved from one place to another. Unexplained knocks echoing through the rafters. Some even claim to have seen shadowy figures darting between the stalls. Mount Pleasant Cemetery is one of Sioux Falls’ oldest burial grounds. Within it stands the Josephine Glidden Memorial Chapel, a 1924 Gothic structure built of stone. By day, it’s quiet and solemn. By night, it’s another story. Visitors claim to hear organ music drifting from the chapel—even when it’s locked and empty. Some have seen glowing figures walking among the gravestones. Others describe an oppressive silence, as if the air itself is listening. One chilling tale tells of a caretaker who spotted lights inside the chapel. When he entered, the room was dark and deserted. A road that feels more like the Twilight Zone, than a South Dakota backroad. Just east of Sioux Falls lies Spook Road, near Brandon, this stretch of road has fueled local legend for decades:. It looks ordinary by day, but after dark, Spook Road is said to twist reality itself. The legend goes like this: when you drive Spook Road, you’ll cross five bridges heading out—but only four on your way back. No one can explain why. Some claim they’ve counted carefully and still ended up one short. Others speak of ghostly figures along the roadside, glowing orbs in the trees, even phantom vehicles tailing them only to vanish into thin air. More than one driver has reported sudden feelings of dread, as if unseen eyes were following their every move. Of course, skeptics chalk it up to faulty memory, country-road illusions, or a good story told too many times. A man who left a lasting impression... and he may still linger! At the corner of Duluth Avenue and 8th Street stands the Pettigrew Home, a mansion frozen in the late 1800s. Built for South Dakota’s first U.S. senator, Richard or RF Pettigrew, the home later became a museum filled with his vast—and sometimes odd—collection of artifacts. But the Pettigrew Home isn’t just a time capsule. Staff and guests have long whispered about strange activity inside. Doors that close on their own. Objects shifting ever so slightly in display cases. A presence felt in Pettigrew’s old bedroom. One story tells of a night guard who heard footsteps upstairs. When he went to investigate, the sound moved to another room—then another—always just out of reach. Others describe cold drafts that have no source, and the uneasy sense that someone is watching from the grand staircase. Is it Pettigrew himself, guarding his treasures? Or perhaps another spirit tied to the home’s history? We may never know. But those who’ve spent time inside insist the Pettigrew Home is very much alive… with the past.
