Johnny Dollar prepares to close his investigation into the death of Dan Parker, shot by his daughter Luann in what she claims was a tragic accident. Despite exhaustive investigation, Johnny finds himself unable to answer the central question: when Luann fired down those dark stairs, did she know she was shooting her own father? Ready to recommend payment of the hundred-thousand-dollar insurance claim, Johnny visits Sammy's Happy Hollow Roadhouse, where the cynical owner remains convinced that Luann coldly murdered her father for the money.
Just as Johnny accepts defeat, a chance encounter with a traveling salesman provides an unexpected break in the case. The man had met Dan Parker on the train the night of his death and reveals that Parker's daughter had recently given him three novelty neckties. The salesman insists on showing Johnny something about one of these ties outside the roadhouse, hinting at a peculiar feature that Parker found amusing. This seemingly trivial detail may finally provide the answer Johnny has been searching for.
