Originally Aired: January 4, 1956
Johnny Dollar #298, "The Caylin Matter Ep 3," Johnny continues investigating the mysterious death of Eddie Kalin, convinced that Eddie may still be alive despite a body in the morgue. When Sergeant Reynosa reports that Tompo Leanly, the gambler who shot at Johnny, claims self-defense and will soon make bail, Johnny sees an opportunity. He believes the worried Leanly, fearing a double-cross, might inadvertently lead them to Eddie. Following a hunch about a locked door and Eddie's pattern of behavior, Johnny begins backtracking through Eddie's haunts and contacts.
Johnny's investigation takes him to two nightspots on Santa Monica Boulevard. At the Cafe Eloines, a hostess named Pepita reveals that Eddie was there the night before his supposed death with his friend Pete Steimer, who has since vanished. She also mentions Eddie's involvement with a stripper called Marty Midnight at the Brass Monkey Inn. Johnny heads to the Brass Monkey, where he encounters a dictionary-reading bartender and watches the chorus line perform, searching for the mysterious dark-haired dancer who may hold answers about Eddie's final hours.
