In 1834, Italian explorer Giuseppe Ferlini destroyed a Meroitic pyramid near modern-day Shendi, searching for gold. What he found — and what he destroyed — sparked a reckoning in archaeology. This episode of The History of Sudan follows the story of Queen Amanishakheto, the kandake who ruled Kush in the first century BCE from her capital at Meroe. We explore the pyramid tomb at Nuri, the treasures Ferlini looted — including jewelry, amulets, and the famous Meroitic goldwork now scattered across European museums — and the debate over restitution. Along the way, we discuss the kandake's role in Kushite politics, her building projects at Naqa and Musawwarat es-Sufra, and the nature of Meroitic kingship. A story of power, plunder, and the long shadow of colonial archaeology.
