While there's been plenty of attention on the development of the city of Bryan's superpark, the city council this week approved a construction contract for the west side's first community park in 15 years.

Deputy city manager Hugh Walker says discussion about Edgewater Park...along Chick Lane and north of Villa Maria...first began four years ago.

More than 80 percent of the $1.2 million dollar construction cost is picked up by spending what's in the council district five park development fund.

Walker says there was enough money to pay for six additional features. That list includes lighted trails, a restroom building, a basketball court, and 13 more parking spaces.

The superpark also came up during the council meeting. During the public comments, the president of the Rio Brazos Audubon Society spoke. Sandy Dillard, who also represented Texas Master Naturalists and the Native Plant Society, said they were interested in protecting trees at the former municipal golf course, which is the number one site in Brazos County for bird watching.
