Shawn Porter is one of boxing's true action heroes, and his wall-to-wall energy and relentless determination are two of the weapons Danny Garcia will have to contend with Sept. 8 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
"Showtime Shawn" spoke with us in-depth about training, studying, dieting and waiting -- one of the hardest parts -- as he counts down the final three weeks to that WBA welterweight championship fight.
We also speak with Ruben Villa IV, winner of 15 national titles as an amateur and two-time conqueror of Olympian Shakur Stevenson, who subsequently beat RV4 at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Villa, 12-0 as a pro, fights Friday in Corona, Calif., against Jose Santos Gonzalez, 23-5, from Guadalajara, Mexico.
Plus, expert analysts Rizwaan Zahid and John J. Raspanti talk about Billy Joe Saunders' apparent death wish (flinging chicken at Deontay Wilder in a Belfast restaurant), Tyson Fury's progress report after a 10-round domination of Francesco Pianata, Bryant Jennings' status on the heavyweight pecking line after his conquest of Alexander Dimentrenko, Carl Frampton's overflowing cup of options at featherweight (Gary Russell Jr., Abner Mares, Leo Santa Cruz, and Josh Warrington), and Mia St. John's confession that she used PEDs for nearly one-third of her pro fights, and her claim that "everybody does it."
And our outstanding British correspondent, Paul McLaughlin, provides his weekly report on the United Kingdom boxing scene.
Dennis Taylor is host of The Ringside Boxing Show, editor/publisher of www.ringsideboxingshow.com, and co-author (with John J. Raspanti) of "Intimate Warfare: The True Story of the Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward Boxing Trilogy," an Amazon bestseller.
