Abimelech a son of Gideon was the first king of Israel. He was not however chosen by God but by the people. He carried a spirit of offence toward others and was a man of war with deep insecurities. During his reign his youngest brother Jotham prophesies the only parable in the historical books of the bible about the difference between true and illegitimate authority.
