Have you ever thought of what your life might be if you were a doctor?
The stereotype is that you'd be a lot richer, with a nice car, a big house, maybe a bach by the sea or a crib near a ski resort.  A couple of bright children who want to follow in your footsteps, and you'd be a regular visitor to other countries. Your working life would be rewarding because you are saving lives and you are helping families.
However, the reality of being a doctor is vastly different. In a recent survey, it was found that half our doctors consider leaving the profession due to workplace stress.
Eight in 10 say their emotional health has suffered. One in four had thought about suicide and the actual suicide rate in Australia amongst doctors is three times the national average.
Australian doctor Richard Mayes is one of many who hit the wall and thought of jumping. His wife Lucy saw him go through the wringer and come out the other side, prompting her to look into what is really happening within the medical industry.
She's now written a book called Beyond the Stethoscope, which is a book of observations and case studies of doctors finding meaning in a funny old profession. Richard and Lucy joined Andrew Dickens to discuss the crisis in the health sector.
