The Greens candidate standing in the Prime Minister's Mt Albert electorate thinks prisoners should have the right to vote.
Luke Wijohn told Kate Hawkesby prisons should be engaging people back into society, rather than pushing down a path of poverty and crime.
“We want to empower prisoners to be active members of society.
“To do that, they need to be engaged in the system and see how their voice has effect.”
Wijohn says if we only listen to a portion of society, we're not going to have the mandate or creativity to tackle this.
“Only with every generation working together, are we going to be able to solve the climate crisis.”
The Government plans to re-introduce the right to vote for prisoners serving three years or less.
