Police are criticising a report that says they unjustifiably tasered a man in the back in Auckland.
The man was pulled over for speeding down the wrong side of the road on his motorbike, but was tasered when he tried to run away.
He suffered facial injuries and was knocked unconscious when he hit the ground.
Superintendent Chris Scahill told Chris Lynch the police need to protect public safety.
"At times it's required for police to use force."
The Independent Police Conduct Authority found the use of the taser was unjustified
