Tonight we're excited to ring in the new year with our friend Alishba Zarmeen and talk a bit about women's issues in regards to Islam and a bit of Islamic history.
Alishba Zarmeen is a Pakistani citizen currently working as a professional photographer in Canada. She has a degree in Politics and Human Development & Social Relations from Earlham College. She first left Pakistan at the age of 17 to attend the United World College in Victoria, BC, Canada. Coming from an incredibly
small but extremely liberal and progressive sect of Islam, skepticism & scientific inquiry were the foundations she was given by her community and her parents, who are both teachers in Pakistan. She has been a very vocal proponent of secularism in Pakistan since her teen years and hopes to make an impact in the international & foreign policy aspect, bridging the gap between the East and the West so that both can benefit from each other and grow collectively in an increasingly insecure world, torn apart by religious and nationalistic loyalties. She's married to author Ali Rizvi and is currently taking a break from her regular activities to raise their now-3-month old daughter.
