Most non-pilots are completely ignorant when it comes to general aviation knowledge. Some things seem too hard to even Google and it doesn't have to be even a “stupid one”. As pilots and flight instructors in the General Aviation community, we often wonder what non pilots think about us. We always wonder if there is a misconception about what we do and who we are. Today we bring in a special guest to our studio. Well educated, young individual who traveled the world but does not know much about GA Pilots in the US. We allow him to ask the “stupid questions”.

The cost of GA... (Will it ever be affordable again...to the average, or... is it the nature of the beast to only be accessible to few? Is the biggest reason for the decline in GA is simply the cost of flying? Let’s go back thirty years... In 1974 the cost was $22 for the plane $6 for the instructor. That’s $28 an hour! Now it’s around $150 for the plane $60 for the instructor. It is about 8 times the cost from 1974. Are you earning 8 times as much as you did 30 years ago?

Boeing just called on the aviation industry to transform aviation training: "We need to bring back the magic of flying." said Mike Carriker, Boeing Test & Evaluation chief pilot. Boeing forecasts a need for more than one million new pilots and technicians over the next twenty years. Can we bring safety, proficiency and "magic" of flying in IFR (or VFR) together, or is it gone forever with all the new technology?

New rules for foreign pilots and foreign registered aircraft in Europe came into effect on Saturday and could mean that your FAA certificate or ratings are no longer recognized by the European Aviation Safety Agency. “The giant middle finger the EU shows to the aviation-world”. The Transition® Street-Legal Airplane is now a significant step closer to being a commercial reality. The production prototype of the Terrafugia completed its successful first flight on March 23. According to the manufacturer to fly Terrafugia you need: "(...) 20 hours of flight time and passing a simple practical test."

Is it the future of transportation that is here? Is it just a science fiction that will never come to reality or a big trouble for the General Aviation with its fatality rate unchanged for years despite the minimum of 40 hours of training required?

We have received an email from one of our IMC Weekend Edition readers. In it he writes: "The best way to experience ice is to understand it! (...) There is no substitute for actual experience. While there are many airborne atmospheric conditions to be completely avoided, such as hail, thunderstorms, freezing rain and some others, ice is not necessarily one of them. We all like to stay out of ice, though pilots operate safely, competently and with reasonable comfort in icing conditions on a daily basis. (...) Flying in or around icing conditions is just another skill, however essential for an IFR pilot. Go find some ice!" Do you agree with him? We will discuss this, plus current aviation news and events! The proposed FAA rule would require first officers - also known as co-pilots - to hold an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, requiring 1,500 hours of pilot flight time. Is a simple time requirement going to create a safer pilot? ... Or most potential airline pilots would be priced out of the industry altogether with no apparent safety benefit?

We are talking to Jason Blair, Executive Director at NAFI, whether safety is about experience, training or just flight time logged? We are interviewing Rich Stowell - Master CFI - Aerobatics, the 2006 National Flight Instructor of the Year and Charter Member of SAFE - Would flight up-set and spin training improve pilot safety and should it be included in any basic training? Since the Wright Brothers took flight in 1903, women have made a significant contribution to aviation. International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. A paid holiday in some countries, March 8, one month from today, is a day of gratitude, reflection and action. In some countries, men traditionally offer flowers to all the women that touched their lives. March 8 also marks the anniversary of the first female pilot license worldwide. Today, month before that day we will be talking to women in aviation only. Are our phone lines going to be silent? If you know a woman aviator or aviation enthusiast, please ask her to call our show.

Some residents sued Charlotte/Douglas International Airport on Thursday, claiming noise from the airport has lowered their home values. In New Smyrna Beach anti-nose activists think the issue is "the constant sorties from flight schools, which (they believe) are encouraged by the state as an economic shot in the arm to local communities." An unavoidable conflict between serving the aviation needs of a region and the quality of life desired by their immediate neighbors. Can they harm the long-term interests of the airport and the public? This and more!

The federal Office of Management and Budget will recommend that FAA eliminate funding for all of the nation's contract air traffic control towers utmost affecting towers at airports used by the general aviation (GA) community. Does it affect you?
